  3. For anyone interested in my iTunes issue.

    I ran a diagnostics check in iTunes and the test came up with one test failure. In the "iTunes Store Connectivity" section there was a red flag showing that the "secure link to iTunes store failed".

    I've checked my settings and iTunes is authorised to be allowed through the Windows Firewall. And turning off my firewall does not solve the problem.

    Perhaps there's an issue with iTunes' secure link status?

    And of course, when I fill out a contact form with Apple the submission just hangs there and doesn't complete.

    I have NO idea why this would happen, but I'd be interested in the progress?
    One of the things that annoys me with Apple is how hard it is to troubleshoot their applications.
    So anything that adds to understanding these items better certainly has my attention!

  5. Looking around the internet I see that my "secure link to iTunes store failed" issue is not an uncommon one.

    Here's a link to one solution that talks about typing "netsh winsock reset" into the command prompt:

    That seemed to work but isn't this a bit of a drastic option?

  6. I have gone to another PC and tried to download the albums from there. I've signed in okay, authenticated the new PC and ran the diagnostics on that set-up and found that the "secure link to iTunes store failed" no longer appears as a red flagged item.

    All systems go then!

    Well, no.

    Pressing the "Buy" button doesn't do anything. I've no idea what to do next.

  7. I'm wondering whether what I am seeing is a symptom of Apple trying to get people to upgrade to their latest version of iTunes?

    On the second PC (see my post immediately above) where I couldn't buy the albums, I bit the bullet and installed the most recent version of iTunes (I like the CoverFlow feature of the old version).

    And guess what? I could buy the albums no problem in the new iTunes! Perhaps the installation of the new version meant that any problems were removed but I cannot help but think that it's a scheming way to get people to upgrade to their latest version of their software.

    That's an option. But I stopped using them because of their crap download manager. Google Play has been my iTunes alternative of choice recently.

    I quite like Google, they're often a little cheaper too. Though I'm not too fond on how they handle your purchases. They're not immediately downloaded, so that's a separate action.
    I don't mind Amazon either and don't think their manager is too bad. Though it always tries to install it after a pruchase and say 'I already got it' is surprisingly un-obvious. The lack of digital booklet is a key nuisance.
    It took me a long time to get i-Tunes and I still believe it's a terribly sh*t system (how can it take 70mb to download the program? How can it be sooo slow to load? It looks terrible! The folder structure in My Documents is just ridiculous!) ... yet, the sound quality is good and it often included a pdf booklet.

    That didn't help you issue at all. :D Good luck!!

  11. Yes, Google is sometimes quite a bit cheaper than iTunes, which means that it pays to check around sometimes. I even found some titles for one particular composer that were actually free on Google Play that were £8 a pop on iTunes!!

    That Amazon experience is very frustrating when I know that I have installed the manager but it keeps asking to re-install it. I used to subscribe to eMusic and it was their update to their download manager that led to me cancelling that subscription.

    I'm really quite happy with iTunes and their store. I've found that, once I had a system sorted, then it worked really well. It was the requirement to find an alternate system that I was particularly annoyed about. But I have managed to sort out a workaround for iTunes now. I'd installed iTunes on our desktop PC so that I could hook up my external hard drive and have that as my library of music for that PC. That allowed me to play entire albums and not have the 500+Gb of music being syncing with my iPod. Up until yesterday this was not used in the iTunes Store. On my laptop, this was my iTunes "workhorse" - it was where I would buy albums off the Store and sync my iPod with. This iTunes library would be all my "favourites" (which are on my iPod). This version of iTunes would be v10 since I wanted to keep CoverFlow.

    But now I have had to upgrade the PC iTunes to v11 in order to buy albums off the iTunes Store, remove them from that library and then transfer them to the laptop for "processing" (tagging, favouriting, etc) and then archive them back to the desktop for transfer to the external hard drive (and adding to the library). This system is a bit more cumbersome but it seems to work.

    Hours ago I was riding on my bike and was going to turn right. To the left of the cycle lane was a signaling car also wanting to go right. So I do what I always do to the best of my abilities and signal clearly by holding out my arm, even making sure that I was holding the arm in an angle so the driver could easily see it. I turn right and cycle along and suddenly as that car drives past me a lady angrily yells at me "Use your arm!". Of course I rapidly responded with "I was using my arm! How about you use your eyes?!!!".... Oh, wait, my mistake. That clever retort was what I thought of 5 seconds afterwards. crazy Anyway, it annoys me when people are blind in traffic, and it annoys me when people are rude in traffic, it annoys me when people make a mistake and blame other people for it and it especially annoys me when I don't even get an opportunity to defend myself against an unfair accusation. This incident was a combination of all four, so on a scale of annoyingness ranging from 1-5, this one is somewhere in the vicinity of 230 trillion.

    Of course pedestrians (many of whom seem to have a death wish) and other cyclists (many of whom seem to think that their bike is some kind of teleportation device which as soon as they sit on it will teleport them to a parallel dimension, that is identical in every way to this one, except that all other people are gone and they are the only person in existence) annoy me too. But as a cyclist, it's especially car drivers who seem to hold the belief that the world would be a better place if I was dead. Their assassination attempts usually occur when they're turning right as I'm going straight through the intersection along the cycle lane. They have to hold back for cyclists by law, and it can have lethal consequences when they don't, but I guess for some people, killing a person or two is no biggie.

    I also have a particular to ... usually-Audi-or-BMW-drivers who (in front of traffic lines) queue up in the wrong lane, only to speed off and then cut in front of you... because they can. Usually, I'm in my RAV4 which hasn't got a lot of power. However, when I'm driving our 3.2L Mitsubishi Shogun I take great delight in putting my foot down and, oh my, does the Shogun move! punk Confuses the heck out of the Audis and Beemers.

    I wish I could help you. if hear of anything anything, I'll let you know. More than likely if anything comes up ( big IF ) it's be nearer to next June.

    A road, driving, eye test and I have to prove my citizenship with a birth certificate. Apparently Minnesota doesn't recognize the state of California. What I ended up doing was renewing my Ca. Driver License for another 5 years.

    I do often visit England, but I am actually Danish. In Denmark we drive on the right side of the road which also happens to be the right side of the road.

    Just the same with many drivers. The thing with a bike is you're more vulnerable, and it really is a good idea to keep an eye out for bikes. I personally think that a CBT should be compulsory for ALL road users, since riding a bike on the road gives you much better road sense, far more than you get when you're used to driving a car (especially a high up 4X4).

    In my experience, most of the twats on bikes are usually younger. Also, the better and more expensive the bike, generally the better the rider.

    Yeah....the week of partying in Vienna and London is taking its toll. Problem is I don't have the time to be sick right now. Guess there's never a good time for that.
