Sorry to hear about the toothache too.

    Haha! Brilliant!

Un Homme et Son Chien - Philippe Rombi

Not hard to see why people have fallen in love with it. Gorgeous music! It's too repetitive for me, really, but that's probably just me.

I might have to... pain is excruciating. Fortunately, the Zimmer music helped. Very enjoyable.

To the Desplat argument: I don't think that his music is empty emotionally and I especially don't think that of Benjamin Button. That score is full of emotions, it always gives me the goosebumps whenever I listen to it. One of his bests.

Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith - John Williams
I love it! - in contrast to the movie. I think the only aspect of the new trilogy that didn't change negatively is the music.
  1. The action music in the new trilogy is horrible when it´s not based on a theme. When it is, it´s fine as usual. The rest is as spectacular as the classics.

Depends on how it's done and who's doing it, I can like both and sometimes hate both.

The Williams track is fantastic though!

True. Compare a Brian Tyler rhythm based frenetic action track to a Williams one and, well, there is no comparison. But I do like the unrestrained nature of action tracks like that (in fact, I like Tyler's action music but in small doses).

    Speaking of action music:

NP: Total Recall - Jerry Goldsmith
Apart from the Main Title, this is not my cup of tea. Goldsmith has never been among my favourite composers, even though there are a couple of his scores in my collection that I truly enjoy. Total Recall is not one of them. I miss the melodies.

That one's amongst my favourites too.

Back to Keky's original point, I don't think I could agree that the standard of music in the prequels was as high as in the originals, but in fairness, the conditions Williams were working under simply weren't as condusive to producing that. That he managed to do such spectacular music anyway is a real credit - and I'd probably rank the music for Revenge of the Sith alongside Return of the Jedi.

An extremely fun score that would benefit from a complete release. Though the 30min+ version I'm listening to is great as is. Much much better than Evolution.

I feel that Total Recall is one of those scores that is very heavy on the thematic material, on motifs and rhythmic pacing. It's not very melodic or sweeping when compared to Goldsmith's late 90s efforts, but there are a lot of thematic material there for me to gnaw on. One of his best I feel.

Do you like First Knight? There are lots of themes in the complete score. One of his best as well.

It certainly has its melodic and sweeping moments. They don't come much more sweeping than "The Mutant" or the last cue (whose name I forget - "A New World", is it?)

Yeah, it does have those moments, and i feel the movie is pretty epic in how the Mars landscape is depicted as well as the music for those scenes, but it probably wasn't the same kind of sweeping thematics that Keky likes.

I admit that there are good, melodic tracks on the Total Recall CD, but far too few for my taste. Goldsmith could write two kinds of action music: one quite melodic in addition of his usual rhythmic writing (Star Trek comes to my mind) and very heavy rhythmic material with little melody in it, like Total Recall. I definitely prefer the former.
And as to your question, lp, yes, I do like First Knight - but I have to admit I needed multiple listens to really appreciate that score.

But Total Recall is full of melody, it's superbly disguised though, in the form of complex and hard to swallow action setpieces. But don't let that spoil the fun, this is as inspired and original (apart from the rip, which doens't bother me in the slightest) you could ever hope a film score to be.

And this one has very good action music too:

    Night Crossing (Jerry Goldsmith)

I hope one day to be able to buy this OOP release as a CD-R copy just will not do, because this is FUCKING splendid stuff. Jerry !!! Rest in Peace ! Live in Us !

I'd rank it even lower. IMHO, The Phantom Menace is probably the best Star Wars prequel score. It's the only prequel score that really, to me, followed in the footsteps of the originals - meaning there were themes a plenty and the writing was just as strong. I was disappointed that AOTC and ROTS managed to only produce 2 new strong themes - The Love Theme and Battle of the Heroes - where the originals and The Phantom Menace had 3, 4, 5 new themes each. And what in the bloody hell was Williams thinking when he spewed out the End Credits for ROTS. But then again, maybe he didn't have time to compose another end credit masterpiece like he did for the original trilogy. I mean, a General Grievous concert suite would have made my day.

I agree with you that TPM is the best of the newer three because of its handful of new themes. On the other hand, to me, they are not as good as the themes of the original trilogy, but still spectacular compared to what other composers try to sell us as "themes". But the biggest disappointment for me was the fact that Williams didn´t reuse that truly heartwarming new theme he wrote for the SE finale of RotJ (the track that was used instead of Ewok Celebration). Just try this: Imagine it without the rhythm and exotic instruments and the childrens choir, give it a slower tempo, and you have a terrific theme. I was sure this was the theme for the Republic introduced to us that Williams wanted to use in the new trilogy, but nothing. I´ve never been so dissappointed with a first listen like that of TPM. It grew on my with later listenings, of course, but still, I think it could have been better.

I think Chase Through Coruscant is up there with some of the material Williams wrote in The Battle For Hoth.

I think Duel of the Fates is up there with the original trilogy themes. IMHO, it's one of the last GREAT themes Williams wrote. And "The Flag Parade" concert version (the Royal Scottish National Orchestra performed the shit out of it) is another crowd-pleaser! Rozsa would be so proud!

I know which material you mean, and I think compared to what you like about Chase, Chase is even better than Hoth. On the other hand, I never liked those parts of Hoth anyway and was much more fond of really rhythmic action tracks like Hyperspace or thematic ones like The Asteroid Field.

You´re right. Those two are terrific themes. I also like the theme for the droid army, but it suffers from its similarity to the Imperial March, and Anakin´s Theme is too sugary for me; it would have made much more sense if Williams would have reused and rewritten it for Episodes II & III. So it stands as that bloody awful kid´s theme. biggrin

I think pretty much all the major new themes for the prequels are terrific, Duel of the Fates foremost amongst them. They're just not quite as terrific as those in the original trilogy. If I were drawing up a list of my favourite Star Wars themes, then I'm not sure how many prequel ones would get into the top ten - not that many, probably. But not that many film composers have ever written as strong a theme as, say, Across the Stars. And that one wouldn't even get in my top ten themes written by Williams for a single film series. That's pretty remarkable really.

I agree with you both. I had assumed from the moment I first heard it in the ROTJ special edition that it would be a major theme in the prequels. Would have loved to have heard it in the kind of arrangement Ralph describes.
  3. So we´re three now? Let´s make plans!!!

What do you think how much convincing would it need to get Williams to write a short concert arrangement for "our" version of that theme?

Beside the money, of course... ^^
  4. Add me for being the fourth admirer of the new Ewok celebration theme. smile I like both the old one and the SE one on equal basis. It would have made absolute sense to use that as a sort of secondary main theme throughout the prequels. But then again it was essentially the music that was performed by the Ewoks themselves during the festivities so that was probably why it wasn't used after all, it would've made no sense using that Ewok music when they don't appear in those flicks.

Me 5? That theme is one of my very favorite pieces of music, period. About 10 years ago I was learning piano and I got this little book with Star Wars pieces and that was one of them. Although I rarely play piano any more, I must say that being able to play such beautiful music, no matter how simple the arrangement, is a unique and almost spiritual experience.
