  1. Exodus (Ernest Gold)

First listen, not clicking with me yet... which happens a lot (like it did with Braveheart, now look what that one has done for me). Will have to spin this some more times to truly get the music. But it sounds lovely because at least it's very thematic.

NP : TESS - Philippe Sarde

Sumptuous score with vivid and interesting orchestration, at the same time this score has real meat on it's bones.....I could do without the repeat 'Morris man' tunes that pop up a few times though.

  2. Inchon (Jerry Goldsmith)

I really like this score. Two big themes (one heroic and one romantic) which get plenty of renditions, each one better than the last and the rhythmic action music is very infectious, the rhythmic style I think Goldsmith does best. The sound quality is rather good, or I simply must have poor hearing. I'm listening to the 20-track version.

Not just pretty good nor very good.

A total blast IMO. My favourite of all MOH albums.

It is a very good score!

Has anyone seen it? I've heard it cited as a terrible movie, it was also partly financed by the Unification Church and had it's leader, the Rev Sun Myung Moon as an 'advisor' on the film.

Larry David would call this "pretty good... pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty good!"

    And I agree.

Just finished Puccini by Marco Frisina

Sort of an eclectic mix of tracks, but I liked it. Some very lyrical and lush, others more peppy and fun and a few more quiet and introspective. It ends with some of Puccini's own arias and compositions.

Now listening to Casino Royale by Burt Bacharach. Fun way to start off a Monday morning.

  4. The Haunting (Jerry Goldsmith)

Funny how you always keep returning to the music of the masters. In the case of Jerry's sound, even a lesser effort is stellar in execution. A neatly compiled album, just about enough thrills and chills. I've always thought the musical ambience worked wonders for the film, and the album contains some spine-tingling cues. Terror in Bed, Curly Hair, and Finally Home are brilliant in creating atmosphere and terror attacks in the flawed film. Far from a masterpiece, but you can call it one compared to many music of the past years.

I love that score and its one of my faves of this year. Of course, I'm a big time Frisina fan so that's kind of expected.
'Puccini' works better if you program it such that you get all the gorgeous melodies first, leaving the folk dances and classical works for later.
And if you don't have it already, check out Frisina's Pope John Paul II (Giovanni Paolo II) and San Pietro. Both are nothing short of magnificent.

Well, it wouldn't be the first time I may have changed my mind ( for some reason I hated Medicine Man until re-listening to it a few years ago ), so we'll see?

Couldn't agree more. One small treasure in the medium of film music. Every piece in there is completely enjoyable.

Hehe, I missed about 1300 posts here but anyway...

I'm listening to audio clips by the South Yorkshire Police Band on their website:
    http://www.policeband.co.uk/audio

How did I get there? Well, I heard a brass arrangement of Lament (Cry of the Celts - Ronan Hardiman) on TV a while ago and when I searched for it on the internet I found this band who plays it too. But there are many more clips there of music from Cry of the Celts and I really enjoy them all for instance Breakout and Suil a Ruin.

They play film music too. Batman theme is on page 2 of the audio clips page. biggrin

The brass arrangements are excellent, as is the actual performance.
What I'm less keen on (and -analogously- disappointed me in the Brassed Off soundtrack as well, which obviously carries a lot of brass band music as well) is the added percussion, which I feel distracts from the actual arrangement.
Now it reminds me a little of those London Symphony Orchestra versions of rock hits that were popular in the early nineties or so.

But that said, South Yorkshire has one fine police brass band!
