I was just being silly. The only score on the level of Alien is Alien itself. Horner's score do come close though, but his score is rather different.

They are both very different beasts and I love both. Though I would say Goldsmith's score is far more creative it is Horner's score I play the most.

I saw the pilot of "Caprica" yesterday evening. I liked the story and the subtle hints at the orignal BG series. I tremendously liked Bear McCreary's score that I've owned for two years now and was thrilled to experiance in context. The series is sceduled now for the coming days.
VolkerBach's music is vibrant and inspired. -

I meant to say (but forgot because I was drunk) that on the other hand Gregson-Williams's theme works very well - it's just a pity it's essentially just placed over all the most important parts of the film. Why didn't Scott just hire him to write the score so he could properly develop the music? -

...and much though it was nice to hear Goldsmith's theme, I'm not really sure what relevance it had at that moment and given that apart from a few hundred of us film music fanatics it's unlikely most people would even recognise it (and it's so different from the rest of the music in the film), perhaps that was a bit ill-advised too. -

A Good Day To Die Hard
This movie does to Die Hard what Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull did to Indiana Jones.
I cannot stress enough how much you should not watch this.
Don't even rent it when it comes out on DVD.
It doesn't contain a single thing that makes the Die Hard series good.
The main baddie is an old man, the entire finale is CGI, and the only person Bruce Willis punches is a pedestrian. No joke.
The only good thing which came from this was Beltrami's rather entertaining score, but even that can't save this movie.
Franchise killer.

For the first ten minutes, I wanted to see Bruce Willis.
When he actually showed up, I wish he'd actually said something.
There was so little dialogue in this movie. -

Cutthroat Island
Truly awful. After ten minutes of this movie, I wanted to tear my eyes out. Badly acted, written and directed, it feels endless. Making matters worse is John Debney's score. While a very entertaining listen on disc, it chokes the movie, mixed to deafening levels and laughably accentuating every melodramatic moment.
(I was reminded of Krull, which has a similar problem. At least to my ears, Goldsmith was the best at writing great music for terrible movies without overwhelming them.) -

i don't agree at all, for me the music elevates the film to the fact that I totally enjoyed it. For me it's not bad acting, for me it's overacting, but with that nostalgic 80's vibe in it that I miss in some of today's movieswaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh -

Saw two movies with some Belgian film music friends at Thomas' place
SERENITY
I sort of liked it. Charming movie and for its small budget, the CGI is quite spectacular. I don't like movies with oracle-like persons that go mad now and then, so it turned me off at the beginning and luckily this subject didn't return often. A bit of an odd story with many twists that come unexpected, which makes it interesting but the ending is rather weak and predictable. I enjoyed it, but I don't get all the fuss and the cult-status it got. The music was okay, nothing I'd go back for.
KICK-ASS
Ha! This was cool. Starts of rather normal but then gets really twisted after the first heroic attempt of the main character. I didn't knew this was also based on a real comic book. Lots of fun and wickedness. It contains the most awesome shooting I've seen in times ([spoiler]Hit-Girl that uses a string of wire to get a gun and let it shoot through the head of a bad guy, hilarious[/spoiler]). Nicolas Cage role is surprising and he's very good. Nice main theme, and temptrack from John Murphy's 28 days later I think. An excellent film to watch in good company.Kazoo -

Well the cult status has to do with the fantastic Firefly series (Joss Whedon) that is in the thematic background of Serenity. I thought that after the series was cancelled this movie was a rather decent way to bring things to a close. The fuss really started after the cancellation when DVD sales went through the roof. It was a bit like Star Trek back in the 60s. Fans clamored for another season. At least they got this film.Bach's music is vibrant and inspired. -

Serenity is a good movie that really requires the knowledge of the series that birthed it (Firefly) for full appreciation (although Whedon did the best job he could establishing the characters for people who haven't watched the series). -

It depends on how much you like it. I think the single disc version is a fine representation of the score.

For me, the original release is more than enough. In fact, even that becomes a big grating in all its bombasticism eventually. But I love the score!I am extremely serious. -

Once, because of the excellent score, i tried to watch Serenity. Turned it halfway off and almost gave me cancer. Like Sunil.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

FIREFLY was a brilliant series that was cut off way too early. SERENITY wrapped up a few pieces and was decent enough as it is, but not quite up to the standard of the shortlived tv show.I am extremely serious. -

Saw Serenity.
Didn't get all the hullaballoo and came away with a big sense of 'meh'.
Much later I saw Firefly, which was excellent.
Then saw Serenity again and enjoyed the heck out of it!
So yeah. It is kinda a standalone film. But not really.'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn -

While it certainly wasn't the most original plot, I thought "Bacl Cat Run" was quite enjoyable.
A TV movie with great production values, centers around a couple young lovers in a small country town. The Dad of the daughter doesn't like the young man, and he threatens him with one other officer, and then himself.
While driving away from the young man, the daughter's dad pulls over a vehicle with escaped convicts who promptly kill him and kidnapp her.
Now the young man is on the race to find them and stay ahead of the police force chasing him.
The score, by Jeff Rona, is adequate and sparse. FSM had repported Hummie Mann was scoring it. I have no idea how far Mann did or did not get, but it had to have helped the film more than what was in it.

I saw SERENITY first and really enjoyed it for the space-western genre mashup, the excellent dialogue, and great characters. I watched FIREFLY some years later and thoroughly enjoyed it, too. Watching SERENITY after that was so good that I had to go out and buy it.
Recently we saw THE BOURNE LEGACY. Like the score, the film is a cheap imitation of the original. It might have worked fine as an action film on its own, but trying to convince us that it's a Bourne film just really lowered it in my estimation.
We also just finished DOWNTON ABBEY season 3. It was expertly done, as were the previous seasons. I still enjoyed it, but my ability to believe that so many horrible things can happen in one household is beginning to wane. -

Death Rides a Horse
Very enjoyable film. The first Morricone-scored western I've seen that wasn't directed by Leone. It's got a fantastic title. Classic western revenge story. Great score. Interesting to read Roger Ebert's review that he wrote at the time; I guess he'd be as embarrassed by that as I am by most things I wrote a few years ago, were he to read it again. -

Skyfall
Very compelling, with a bunch of terrific performances. I especially noticed the gorgeous cinematography. Always great to watch an action movie where the camera actually holds still. Newman's score supported the movie well but isn't anything I'd listen to outside of it. -

Captain America
So at last I have seen Captain America. It's an OK action fantasy film that you can pass an evening with but it is little more. I barely noticed Silvestri's score. It's as non-descipt in context as it is on CD. The march is nice but honestly, it's overshadowed by every single march John Williams has ever written.
I liked "The Avengers" much better including the depiction and depolyment of CA.
Les Miserables
My family is determined to drag me into this film this afternoon. Let's wait and see ...Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
