VIKINGS is getting better, although only slightly. There's little intellectual depth to it, but it looks good and you get a 'feel' for it. Gabriel Byrne is excellent as always, in the role as the vicious chieftain.
Loved Morris' score in the last episode -- down to the male singing and wooden percussion in the raid on the English village.

Just saw SKYFALL. I really liked that. Fantastic villain. Very engaging storyline. Excellent cinematography. Great acting all around. Lots of nods to past films. Psychological complexity. Yup, this is my new favorite Bond film. -

I haven't got a favourite Bond film. Otherwise I second everything you said. How did you like the score in context? I thought it was great.

I saw SKYFALL again at home last week, and was once again enthralled by the score. Exactly the right placement of the Bond theme: never outdoing it, but at the right moments giving the thrill that extra 'oomph', while saving enough to give a certain rush when it returns in full in the final moments of the film. Nice. -

Skyfall's pretty good... then the third act happened.
I also saw this!

Oh come on, Erik, you can make such videos about each and every film you please. It's a James Bond film that tries to make its characters appear a bit less cartoon-like. It's the perfect bridge between all that was new in "Casino Royale" and the series' tradition. It delivers big time.Bach's music is vibrant and inspired. -

Like I said I thought it was pretty good until it turned into Home Alone during the third act. Actually, the bad guy's motives were pretty stupid and I didn't need a video to point out the flaws in his utterly ridiculous plan.
IMO, Casino Royale is the best Craig Bond hands down and is the best Bond film since the Dalton films.

In fact I'd like to hear some good and imaginative reasons why certain things don't look right or plot points don't add up. I remember Marvel comics did something like this, they used to hand out a "No Prize" if readers spotted something wrong, silly stuff like Spiderman's costume suddenly turns yellow in one panel but is back to normal in the next, that kind of thing. Marvel changed the rules so you could only win a "No Prize" if you could give a valid reason as to what caused a 'mistake' without blaming the obvious ( artists, colourists etc )On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

I thought it was good, though probably because the bond theme got a better workout in the film than on the album.
Yeah the third act was significantly worse, but that's true of a lot of bond films
that video made me laugh. Did they do one of Casino Royale? (Which I agree is a fantastic bond film).

That's exactly what I compared it too (and probably everyone else).
I can forgive the third act though. The rest was really good. Also, I really enjoyed watch Bond be Bond in Britain for so much of the film. He's always in exotic countries, but a good deal of this film took place in his own stomping grounds, which was fun to watch. -

Finished watching Dexter. The end of season 7 was tragic, emotional and awesome at the same time. Poor Deb, she felt miserable that entire season. I hope things will go better for her and Dex in season 8, but I'm guessing it will only go downhill for them both.
Anyway, shame I started watching Dexter before all the seasons had been made. I hate having to wait several months for the next season to start. That's why I never used to watch TV series. I hate all that waiting involved.
Have started watching Breaking bad and am halfway through the second season. I haven't fallen for it like Dexter, as I haven't really fallen for the characters and the whole thing is a bit too real and depressing. Also, Dexter was feeding the inner vigilante, but with Breaking bad we're rooting for the bad guys. It doesn't feel as satisfactory somehow. It's well-made though and I do enjoy it to some degree, so I'm sticking with it.

I love that it makes you root for the "bad guys". Walt just becomes more and more of a dick, but somehow we still root for him. They really do challenge that as the show progresses, and by the end of the first half of season 5, we are left feeling less and less sympathy for his character, and more for Jessie. It's great. I await your views once you've seen season 4 with great anticipation! (Best season finale I've ever seen, and best use of CG in any TV show I've ever seen.)
I'm currently about half way through Six Feet Under, and quite enjoying it. I now see Michael C. Hall as his character in the show rather than a young Dexter. -

Absolutely, I agree with Steven. I love shows where you problematize the moral sympathies and the identification structures (to put it somewhat fancily) Granted, I haven't seen DEXTER yet, so I don't know how that would compare, but BREAKING BAD is one of the best shows of the 2000's, IMO, and it only gets better and better as the seasons go by.I am extremely serious. -

They do make it a little easy to like Dexter at times. So if there's one thing I'd change about that show, it would be making Dexter's character more 'challenging' for the audience. Yes, okay, he kills people. But he kills people we as the audience want to see killed. It's very easy to root for Dexter. We all feel like the world could do with a Dexter. But I want to see more questionable kills (which to be fair did sort of happen in the last season). -

Cool, Steven, looking forward to latter seasons. Breaking bad is the last place I'd expect CG, but I guess that will make it all the more impactful.
Yep, the Dexter character is pretty easy to sympathize with. I remember that one of his first kills seemed to start with torture, but since then he's gone over to killing everyone in a rather quick way; perhaps because they wanted people to be more sympathetic towards the character. Anyway, I'm glad the show is not torture porn.
Personally I like that he's so likable. I think it's one of the charms of the show that they take a sociopathic serial killer, i.e. the type of person everyone fears, and invite us into his mind so we can understand him and root for him. Given that the thrill of this show is that he's often close to being caught, either in social situations or by the police, I think the show would suffer if he was less likable and we thereby wouldn't mind as much if he was caught.
Oh, and I like that he's a bit like Data from Star trek TNG, a non-human with the appearance of a human, unable to empathize and understand emotions, deep down wishing he was a human being.
Anyway, I do sometimes like moral ambivalency too, but it depends on the show. Different shows, different approaches.
Oh, and Thor; watch Dexter.

Sadly.
I was pretty much the only one who had one massive W00T moment when Talia was revealed, but no one unaware of O'Neill's Batman obviously got my excitement.
I was afraid the film wouldn't be very strong when it was revealed Bane was the prime villain.
He was never very interesting in any way, as his creation wasn't from any vision or concept of a truly interesting, multi-layered villain but from a dramatic need to have Batman properly damaged. So he always ever was a vehicle (much like the monster Doomsday's creation which was solely to get to the dramatic apotheosis to have Superman "killed". The monster itself was boring as shit.)'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn -
