    Some other good films from that year for me include A BRIDGE TOO FAR, the cult David Lynch film ERASERHEAD and the very underrated THE WHITE BUFFALO.

  3. I made the mistake of checking out scenes from the film "Deadfall", so I could hear Jim Fox's score (I was curious).

    This is one of the most Godawful films I think I've ever seen.

    Unknown Island (1948) in the cinecolor process which in a word is horrible. The film as a whole did a credible job as a 'B' movie. I've given it a ranking as #244 as one of the best 'B' movies of all time.

    Saw the first episode of HANNIBAL. I was not impressed, but then again I can't stand Bryan Fuller, so that may have something to do with it.

    I agree, actually. I think Mikkelsen is a terrific actor, but I don't think he's right for this role.

    Finished watching Breaking bad. I never fell for it completely, but I did enjoy it; I consider it time well spent and am looking forward to future episodes. And yes, Steven, [spoiler]Gus' demise[/spoiler] was epic! explode I started to [spoiler]miss him[/spoiler] soon after though. A fascinating antagonist. Certainly better than Tuco, who seemed like every single drug dealer stereotype rolled into one person. I can appreciate the fear and uncertainty the Tuco character was trying to provoke, but the performance was too over the top to be believable (Kinda like the Nicholas Cage character in the clip Justin posted above).

    Oh, and a big thanks to Erik, who did his best to berate me for wanting to discard Game of thrones after I had watched the first episode. I gave it another chance and I love it! The casting is sublime. Every single actor is fantastic, even the children. Peter Dinklage's character is my favourite; he gets great lines and his delivery of them are all works of art. Also, the dialogue is the stuff of legends! The people who write this stuff must be the Einsteins of manuscript writers. I also like that they don't throw dragons, giants and monsters in your face right away, but builds up expectations through hints and stories about these mythical creatures, that haven't been seen for ages. Oh, and the big green explosion is the coolest explosion I've ever seen on TV or in a movie.

    I've finished watching that now too, so I desperately need a new show and hope you guys have some recommendations. The show shouldn't be too depressingly real (which explains why I'm not a fanatic about Breaking bad even though it's very well made), and I'm in the mood for exciting, mysterious or scary stuff, instead of comedy and romance. And it shouldn't have an air of TV quality about it. Lost was a great show, but it felt a bit too TV-y; many of the actors weren't too great. A show like Game of thrones, that's pure movie quality. Below I'll list the series that I've seen, with a 1-10 rating reflecting my enjoyment level:

    I found BREAKING BAD totally addictive, but I'm glad you liked it, at least. The Gus character was amazing...I thought to myself "who is this actor?". Hadn't really seen him before. So I've been following Giancarlo Esposito ever since -- in series like ONCE UPON A TIME and REVOLUTION -- but he has never reached those heights, most likely because no other character since has been as well-written as that.

  14. I just skimmed through an oddly compelling, though remarkably cheesy, 1985 movie called "Attack of the Beast Creatures":

    The sound and images of those evil little things running, will laughbly never be forgotten. That in of itself is classic.

    I checked it out because I was unfamiliar with the two composers. The score is an electronic synth work that actually drives the film pretty well, and for some chase scenes, has some odd faster stuff.

    Anyway, I've decided that I'll either start watching The Sopranos or Battlestar galactica next. I'm not normally in the mood for mafia stuff, but I watched a youtube clip with some scenes from The Sopranos, and it looks pretty damn entertaining! Concerning Battlestar galactica, I love all that end of the world stuff, and it looks pretty cool and I have some music from it that's pretty neat, so that's a nice bonus.

    Firefly, Rome, Deadwood and The killing are shows also on the table, but I'll probably watch the two other shows first.

    I managed 2 hours before giving up with this overly ambitious self-indulgent rubbish. I think I did pretty well. Anyone here seen it and managed more? Well done to you if you have. (I'd recommend this to Thor: it's a visually impressive film which doesn't make a lick of sense. Perfect for him.)

    Coincidentally I've just watched it too. I actually liked it. I think I was in just the right mood and rated it an 8. Though I can imagine in another mood I would have found it boring. Some films are like that. I thought all of the substories were entertaining in their own way, and somehow I found that it worked when they switched between them, despite the stories all being so radically different.

    It lacked any real thread to follow, nor did I care about any of the (what were presumably) characters. It was like "Now there's some stuff happening, because that person did things. Oh, and now we're back to that fellow I saw a few minutes ago who is also doing stuff and things."

    To deny the audience a hook to grasp on to TWO HOURS into the movie is a huge flaw, I think. Pretty, but tedious.

    You watch Breaking Bad, and I'll watch The Sopranos. wink Oh, as much as I'm really enjoying Six Feet Under at the moment, I fail to see what makes this one of the greatest shows ever? It is good. Very enjoyable, and quite funny at times. But brilliant? I don't see it.

    You're right, Steven. I liked CLOUD ATLAS quite a lot for the reasons you cite, but there were some elements that didn't work as well too. I had somehow hoped it was more intellectually challenging than what it eventually was.
