  1. I can see why some people might find The Hobbit to be too long, but considering how much I personally love that world, I didn't mind one bit. I suppose people went in expecting to see a theatrical cut and instead got something paced more like the Extended Editions. For me, not a problem at all. cool

    Anyway, a Rings/Hobbit matinee seems to me a similar marathon to sittting through Wagner's Ring cycle (hey! I see a theme!) in one go: too much of a good thing.

    No matter how much you enjoy something, 'too much of a good thing' will kick in at some point! Keeping to the old Dephian adage of 'all things in moderation' is, to me, the best way of enjoyment.

  10. Just saw the Danish animation film Ronal the Babarian on TV. Never heard of that film before. It's hilariously funny! Nicklas Schmidt has done a very nice score that sadly seems not to have been released on CD.

    Anyway: very funny!

    Life of Pi

    It removes some of the more uncomfortable parts of the book (I didn't really notice that first time I saw it) presumably to make it more family friendly, but it's still quite a film. Dazzlingly creative and visually stunning, the most bountiful feast in that regard since Avatar. And it looks wonderful on my 3d tv!

    I hated this the only previous time I saw it (at the cinema), not because it's a bad film, but because it so viscerally shows off the worst of modern humanity. I was more engrossed this time round. Scott's usual visual flair is there - and one of Zimmer's very best scores in terms of helping the film, which it really does.

  15. THE DEAD ZONE has just started on Horror Channel. It has my favourite Michael Kamen score. It is such a sad score.

    I tried to watch the TV series version. Managed 1 1/2 seasons before I gave up. Boring stuff. But yeah....the film is great.

    I'm tempted to say this was the first really good adaptation of a King novel. But I have to say CARRIE was very good too.

    Neither of those beats STAND BY ME, SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION & GREEN MILE.

    Lots of great Stephen King films (THE SHINING is still one of my alltime favourite films), some less so, and some that are really bad, but nonetheless fun (MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE comes to mind).

  27. He didn't *hate* Kubrick's version, he stated that it's an amazing horror movie. He didn't like the fact that he ignored the points about alcoholism, which is one of the novel's main themes, if I remember well.

    The LANGOLIERS mini-series is OK, but the novel (short novel, to be exact) is really great. Should have warranted an even better adaptation.
