  1. It would be an interesting experience, going from having seen DRACULA without music, to seeing it with Glass's music. With Glass's score, you almost want to see the film without the preconceptions of having seen it with no music. I think it's ok - certainly an interesting reading of the film. Sometimes the angular quartet sound feels like it needs to fatten up a bit later in the film, but within the constraint of that ensemble, I like it a lot as an album, and the final 4 cues are great.

  2. Thanks! Looking forward to seeing it again.

Excellent night's viewing last night thanks to the BBC.

First, an hour-long report on the Tea Party on the eve of the American elections. It left me wondering whether America is truly the scariest country on earth. While the BBC's institutional left-wing bias may lead one to wonder whether the report was just not very balanced, in fact the show was presented by one of the corporation's few right-leaning political reporters, so probably not. I was just frightened by what I saw.

I'm a conservative American, and I think the tea party movement is nuts.

I'm moderately right-wing (by British standards, not American ones) and thought the same. "Obama is like Hitler and Stalin - they also believed in high taxes and gun control" said one interviewee.

    LOL!

They use these words so careless and random. Socialism, communism, taxes, ... Is it true that for 95% of the US people taxes were actually lowered? I saw a similar short video on Glenn Beck, some sort of fucked up tv and radio show host who's using fear and lies as the main ingredients to support the people and companies behind tea party and perhaps Fox.

The stupidity frustrates me. But then, it's perhaps because I'm tired of the Belgian non-government and politics.

    Burn after Reading

In a way, it reminds me of Joel and Ethan Coen's masterpiece The Big Lebowski, and at several times it's equally funny. I laughed my ass off with Brad Pitt's character and the basic premise that so many people pay a price for something completely ridiculous is Coen magic biggrin Ah, a fun and well acted movie

    8 out of 10

Absolutely stunning movie, i laughed my ass off. Brad Pitt's character is the best.

I watched this for a second time, and things I didn't get the first time, completely left me LOL'ing the second time. Best example: the final scene with the CIA guys just being totally clueless... PRICELESS !!!!! biggrin biggrin biggrin

It pretty much sums up the movie. The Coen's sense of humor is so subtle, and so downright genius. beer

I love Coens too, but who doesn't? The scene with Bradd in the car with the other dude where he tries to scare him with his eyes and ends up beaten up is pure gold.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

THE SILENT FLUTE aka Circle of Iron

A martial arts fantasy that was written and to have starred Bruce Lee before his untimely death, it's good fun film starring David Carradine in multiple roles and Jeff Cooper ( no, me neither ) as the central character in search of enlightenment travelling a strange fantasy landscape meeting ( and fighting, of course ) weird and wonderful characters on the way interspersed with his meetings with David Carradine in the guise of his flute playing blind man who spouts cod philosophy while effortlessly beating the shit out of people with said flute.

A very enjoyable flic, superbly photographed over some astounding landscapes which, I believe but am not sure? Was filmed in Israel.

I bought this film ( £2...can't go wrong ) mainly for Bruce Smeaton's superb score, the flute theme which recurs throughout is gorgeous and reminds me a lot of John Barry's theme for Body Heat, I was also astonished to hear a long piece towards the end of the film that sounded like a conglomerate of cues from Basil Poledouris's Conan The Barbarian, in fact I would be totally astounded if Basil had never seen this film ( which, quite frankly, would make a very suitable double bill ), such is the similarity. I would LOVE to see this get a score release, I would be first in the queue.

That is exactly the kind of garbage that upsets me about the tea party movement. It seems that the people most caught up in this movement are 100% ridiculous. The other major problem I have with them is the way they acted in all those town hall meetings when they were first getting started. Did the show you watched talk about that at all? When the democrats were trying to get a health care bill passed they would hold town hall meetings trying to inform people in their districts about the bill, but all these tea party wackos would show up and shout until they were removed, just so that the politician couldn't talk. It is truly worrying that so many Americans have been caught up in this. We're dumber than I thought we were...

I watched a bit of an odd film called Whistle Stop last night with George Raft and Ava Gardener, music by Dimitri Tiomkin. The OST was a major distraction a couple of times in the film.

After witnessing at the brilliance of Un Prophete earlier in the year I've held a bit of a grudge against the film that stole the Best Foreign film Oscar from it, The Secret in their Eyes, ever since. But now after having seen this first-class Argentinian film I don't feel so bad about the decision. It turns out to be a brilliantly written, fully fleshed out character study disguised as a murder mystery. Ricardo Darin, as he was in Nine Queens and The Aura, is just suberb. I love watching this guy.

Just finished watching the first episode of Alan Partridge's new web series, 'Mid Morning Matters', which follows Alan's Norfolk radio show through a kind of 'live video stream' of the studio.

I'm sure Tim and Alan will be interested in this if they're not aware of it already.

Here's the link to the first episode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucrpgmJxx0E&

A night of Johnny Dankworth on BBC 4 right now, some great stuff including a duet with Dankworth on Sax and Henry Mancini on flute playing the theme from The Pink Panther and Baby Elephant Walk from HITARI, the joy is in the fact that they are both really enjoying themselves, classic!

  6. Watched Despicable Me at the weekend. I thought that it was excellent. Funny and imaginative. I liked how the film didn't feel the need to explain much about the situation. We just had to accept it - which was fine. There did seem to be a certain The Incredibles feel to the look of the film. Which was fine.

I seem to remember some excellent score tracks from Heitor Pereira (or were they Zimmer? He had a credit as well). No sign of a score release? I saw a credit for Pharrell Williams but I assume that this was for the songs included in the song selection release?

    I'd certainly recommend it.

    Saw Salt.

Unrealistic as hell, but I found it very entertaining. I'm really beginning to like Liev Schreiber btw.

Rated it 7 outta 10 on imdb.

He surely can't be talking about Despicable Me. That's a great animated film.
