NP: A History of Violence (Howard Shore)
Ok, there is 'The Staircase', which is a really fine cue from Shore. And there is its sweet predecessor, 'The Cheerleader', and the reprise of 'Staircase' in 'The Return'. But for the most part, this score is actually really boring. It has that relentlessly cheerless feel that Shore's dramatic scores sometimes have. I think I initially liked it on release, riding on my appreciation for what the film was trying to do and a general enthusiasm for Shore after LOTR, but listening to it today, I'm wondering what it was that I liked.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

NP: The Interpreter (James Newton Howard)
What's going on today? A Howard Shore I thought I once liked a great deal sounds boring. And a James Newton Howard score that not even his many fans will stand up for sustains my interest better? Bizarro world is here!A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

Already half done with it Tim. From everything that I can remember it is a good representation of the music.

I'm sorry Erik. It just lives and breathes from the word go until the last second. That opening texture, the electric cello glissando against the Tuvan throatsinger, is fantastic. Desplat's music sounds so alive against that of many of his peers.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

I found it rather understated and lacklustre... (but I grant there appears to be an audience for this kind of scoring)'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn -

Pretty minimalistic yeah, but gorgeous - lovely, lush strings and gentle piano work supporting. I wouldn't say it's better than Desplat, but yes it's a very good score and I liked it a lot. -

Sea Dogs 3: Age Of Pirates (game) Yuri Poteyenko
Yeah, I've never heard of him or this project either. And it's further proof that the most obscure game titles seem to have the best scores!
Two of the biggest games of last year, Assassin's Creed 2 and Call Of Duty 4...2, had some of the least interesting scores from that year. But THIS, this is good. A proper piratey score with some genuinely lush melodies. One for Golden Age fans I think. Brilliant stuff! -

It doesn't have many fans unfairly. It's actually a pretty interesting percussive driven score, i listen to it frequently.

Well, he won't struggle much if he likes to listen to darker material, dissonant, which Edge of Darkness' 2nd part is full of.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Want !!
In the meantime one hell of a piratey score, and my personal favourite from the composer:
Lost in Space (Bruce Broughton)
If Superman had the best opening cues on an album ever, this one comes very close. Tracks 2 - 6 (a good 30 minutes worth) are just huge amounts fun, full of brilliant fanfares and rhythmic sections. Of course the remainder is just as good. Love this score and its adventurous spirit."considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G. -

You think Lost In Space is piratey? Fair enough. It's definitely one of my favourite scores, that much is true. -

The first couple tracks are Desplat killers!!! Emotionally centered, hypnotic and lush. It's built around minimalistic ideas, but rendered evocatively and beautifully. Desplat is too methodical and cold for me, in comparison. -

If you compare it to the drivel of recent years, yeah it's definitely piratey. As in swashbuckling good fun.
This could've worked just as well in a Cutthroat Island style flick."considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G. -

Weeeeell, I guess so. It has elements of swashbuckle in it, but to my ears it's primarily a traditional sci-fi adventure score. Big epic themes, 'spacey' textures, loud complex action cues and, well, big themes (they're so good you have to mention it twice). -
