NP: The Last Airbender - JNH

First listen. Up to track 8 now. I'm hearing something of a theme here. The action passages, as of now, are typically classic JNH and are very enjoyable. However, given now hard it is to hear a clear theme, I'm afraid that the score might end up being very forgettable in the end, but we'll see.

    I notice 3 "motifs".

the 2 notes progression, this kind os strings "effect" and the "military" percusion.

(I leave the "stargate" theme aside because it's only heard in the suite)

How I said, since the action music could be composed for The postman and it doesn't have any interesting sound (matrix) and the main themes are not strong enough...it could be forgettable. I think a lot of people is having orgasm only for 2 tracks....

we will see how many of us is playing this score in a year.
  1. It's not Stargate, Jordi. I think it's a Vaughan Williams reference, something that JNH did already on Shyamalan's Unbreakable (which was my favorite JNH score until The Village came along)

Yes, Erik told me the same. but for me it always will be the stargate theme.

NP: The Journey of Natty Gann - James Horner

If there was ever a candidate for most perfect soundtrack album ever this one would be in contention for the title! What a score, what an album!

Same feeling here. Only one listen so far but I was expecting something more instantly memorable. I like the fact it isn't another one of those atmospheric or ultra-soft scores. There's actually very meaty material here. Like others have said, it'll require multiple listens. This is no Titanic after all, which I loved from the 1st listen, more a Braveheart which took me 5-6 listens to truly appreciate. These are only examples, not to be compared with TLA of course. wink

I'm wondering if the sequencing of the album is throwing people of. It's obvious that this is out of film order (look where "The Prologue" is located) so I'm wondering if after seeing the film and putting the cues in chronological order will improve on the experience... a lot like the terribly sequenced Back To The Future III album.

The Kung-Fu Will Smith Kid - Horner

Ok so this comes from someone who was really disappointed with Avatar... but I actually like this somewhat. It's melodic, it's the usual style and use of motifs we've come to expect from the man. At the same time I think it lacks a personality and the album is too long (again) but I'll definitely check this out more in the weeks to come. I can only judge a score after about 3-4 listens anyway. But it leaves a better first impression than Avatar did. And this one does have a proper ending even if the action cues lack the excitement of early Horner. But that isn't exactly new.

Next listen, since everybody's going bananas over it: The Last Airbender. I expect this to be really good !

    I didn't say that!

    Exactly, I said that. shocked

That's grave misuse of quoting, for which there can be no excuse. Can't really tell what happened here. You had one beer too many there, D?

  4. NP: Regarding Henry by Hans Zimmer

It's an easily digestible synthesized work from his light drama period of the early 1990s. One of the themes in this score is a precursor to the "prophecy/destiny" theme from The Lion King. I find it to be charming in its own way although the constructs of the score have aged it a bit much. If I was feeling generous, I might say it's nice but nothing special, but it's a bit more charming than that; four stars.

I tought the same! I'm just listening "prologue".

Perhaps if you put the suite at the end, and prologue the first track you improve the listening experience.

Charming is indeed the right word for Regarding Henry, the vocals by Bobby McFerrin also add tremendously to it. I totally love Regarding Henry, one of my favourites from Zimmer.

  5. Disclosure - Ennio Morricone

A really peculiar piece of work. Not one I play too often but it shows once again what an innovator Morricone has been (and still is I should think). To hear that bittersweet theme along with such unsettling suspense music is something only he can get away with. I can't say I enjoy this for its melodic side, but I can appreciate Disclosure for its originality. The score gets a little repetitive after a while though.

    Absolutely love that nostalgic sound.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  6. Am I the only one who doesn't really get into Zimmer's early synthesized drama scores except Driving Miss Daisy and Thelma and Louise?

I still love those early Zimmer scores. Though mostly stuff after A World Apart. Anything pre-1988 is a bit hit and miss for me.

NP: The Sims 3 World Adventures & Ambitions - Steve Jablonsky

Much better than The Sims 3, and on par with Trevor Morris' The Sim Cities score. I wouldn't listen to this more than once or twice.

    Still my favourite Morricone score.

    majestous, inventive, epic, moving, touching....

"Red Ghosts" is so weird that you can just smile. Fantastic piece.

Is Secret of Sahara a sequel of "sahara"? It shares themes and orchestrations?

Mmm....Listening Marco Polo original album....Maybe that's my favourite Morricone score tongue

I didn't say I like it. I didn't like The Sims 3 at all. And the sequel is better, which doesn't mean much in the scheme of things. It was also quite unfair for me to compare Steve's scores to Trevor Morris' vastly superior version.

The first track is indeed very sweet. Morricone usually do better and cathier themes for his movies, but it's still very charming. The victory segment in track 5 is a real beaut, and the rock track (3) is quite energetic and fun. Other than that it can indeed be mindnumbingly repetitive. I remember Southall saying in a review that the passacaglias made him feel like launching nuclear warheads in Morricone's direction, and I must admit I sympathize whenever I listen to this album.

    My rating: ***

    I think you are lying....

I don't say it's a bad score, but it's thematically poor, almost every track has some suspense stuff (wich kills the listening experience), and about the orchestrations thing I said...I'ts (almost) only strings, horns, trumpets and percusion. I need more colorful orchestrations: bells, harps, more flutes.... Even newton Howard subtile synth isn't here!

I almost find it more interesting than Airbender, since it has more colorful orchestrations and some nice renditions of the main theme.
