I will close the day out with Bruce Broughton's brilliant score LOST IN SPACE. I still can't comprehend how Broughton managed to write such creative and detailed orchestral music in under 14 days.

Me neither. I'm sitting here trying to finish off one of my (awful) compositions for one of my projects, and it just makes me appreciate even more how talented these guys are.

It also makes me appreciate Logic Pro. It's brilliant.

NP : STAR CRASH - John Barry

Incredibly cheap n' tacky Star Wars rip gets a good fun, Bondish sounding score.

Anyone ever seen the film? It's got a very young David 'The Hoff' Hasselhof and is appalling, it's only saving graces being the score and the ever sexy Caroline Monroe ( check it out on youtube, it's a hoot ). I can only imagine that Barry was tricked into scoring this. dizzy

The Man Without a Face - James Horner

A wondrous listen full of thematic loveliness. 'A Father's Legacy' sums it all up in 6 great minutes. One of those by the man that never fail to get me all emotional.

The End Credits are even better. Perfect example of bittersweet writing.
  2. The Phantom Menace - John Williams

I am head-over-heels in love with "Anakin's Theme". Not only is it one of the ripest, most romantic string-led pieces I've ever heard, I thought it was really clever to tie it into "The Imperial March". I love it when composers play with themes like that.

I also love "The Flag Parade" and "Duel of the Fates", but sue me if I actually thought "Battle of the Heroes" from Revenge of the Sith was somewhat better.

If you like when composers play with themes, and assuming you haven't realized this yet, listen carefully to the melodies used in "Augie's Great Municipal Band" and notice what OTHER melody it sounds like.

Quite possibly the most ingenious use of leitmotif in the history of the concept, IMO smile

I'd say, "...of the ones working in that style". I can also think of Navarrete, or others, who are in that exceptionally high category in terms of quality of writing, orchestral brilliance and thematic wealth, but just don't write in that lush old fashioned style.

    Taras Bulba - Franz Waxman

This score has everything I love in film music: memorable themes, both lyrical and exciting action writing, wonderful orchestration and performance and an ability to make me feel good.
    A superb effort by Waxman.

NP: Mutiny on the Bounty - Bronislau Kaper

One of the last true Golden Age scores! Absolutely stunning and FSM's 3CD presentation is, IMHO, one of the finest soundtrack releases of all time! Epic doesn't even begin to describe this brilliant score!

You know, I've only just started playing this magnificent score this past week!
What a shock! How could I have missed this for so long?
Everything Erik has written about this stunning release is true!
I'm actually quite gob-smacked at how rich and rewarding this score is.
And what a beautifully preserved recording!
This is going to become a strong favorite of mine for sure!

Let's put that through the Demetris Hyperbole Translator-O-Matic:

It has its moments; wonderful, beautiful, lyrical moments of rare beauty and thematic brilliance. Both strong and romantic, this is a pure modern gem of absolute gorgeous quality and rare beauty few other composers can write today!

Good lord. Sounds like a winner.
