    The Special Relationship - Desplat

Desplat impresses once again with his hippest, jazziest score yet. cool

Yeah, that one is pretty cool. By the way, I've notice that in Tony Meets Bill, he used the ostinato from his score for Julie & Julia, in Julie's theme.
  2. Jackboots On Whitehall is a funny one for me. Mikael released this on CD but not as a digital download and was a bit cryptic on whether it would be receiving a digital release. So I ordered it (along with some others) on CD from SAE and it's probably now travelling at a snail's pace over to the UK. In the meantime the digital release appeared on Amazon and was released on Monday.

One of the downsides of the "digital revolution" - releasing rights distributed across various media.

I await with some interest the fate of Mikael's latest release, Cuckoo. Released as a CD next week, available as a digital download on iTunes from today but no mention of any other release as a digital download.

    Family Plot John Williams

Both ethereal and playful, this is great!

I'm interested in this, what other Williams does it most resemble?

NP : THE FOUR FEATHERS - James Horner

    A very pleasurable listen.

One of my Horner favourites of the decade.

    The Varese description read:

Family Plot is a very important score for Williams in that it established a certain approach and tone of writing that he would further explore in such diverse later scores as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Home Alone, The Witches of Eastwick and Harry Potter, among others.

And I'd pretty much have to agree with it. A prominently recurring theme/motif I recognise from Star of Bethlehem in the 'Home Alone' scores and some of the Choral stuff is very reminiscent of the first two 'Harry Potter' scores. But it is it's own beast, I'm on my second listen now and enjoying it even more.
  6. SYMPHONIC FANTASIES - LIVE CONCERT RECORDING

    http://www.symphonicfantasies.com/

A fantastic and professional recording of a concert performance in Köln, Germany! Featuring music I have known for many years from classic games such as Kingdom Hearts, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy. The album contains 4 long suites and they are incredibly fun to listen to, as there is not a boring moment on this CD, instead wonderfully played and memorable tunes, complete with choir, solo performers and epic climaxes.

It's really good seeing such wonderful game music finally deserving the symphonic treatment it deserves. punk

OK that sounds like something I might like. I'll go order it. Thanks a lot.

Congratulations Hans and Mel for your GG nomination!

    NP: Inception

Vangelis-like cues are one of the reasons why I like this scores, and they are one of the reasons why I can't take it seriously.

I really hope you like it, I've been picking up a bit of a 'Monsignor' vibe from it on this second listen.
  9. No worries, Williams from that period can do hardly wrong for me. Though I grew up with the scores that came later of course.

I love every second of it. One of Horner's finest score. And far better than his overrated "the missing".

I have problems to choose between Four FEathers and his other 200X score: Beyond Borders.

There's quite a bit of a Vaughan Williams lift but that's a good thing in my book.

    NP:Tron Legacy "deluxe edition".

It's a cool score. But after the "surprise" it becomes a little bit empty. It's not bad, it's cool as hell, but this "transformers" string progression really tires me.

I can't hardly wait to see the movie.

I actually loved The Missing. "The Long Ride Home" is one of his best compositions.

If I had to pick a favorite Horner score from 2003, I'd go with House of Sand and Fog. Great string writing.
  12. NP: Let Me In (Michael Giacchino)

way too long and LOST like in tone, not really what I wanted sad
    waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh
  13. The King's Speech - Alexander Desplat

I don't know how this man does it. One knockout after another. I liked this SO MUCH MORE than The Queen.

Here's hoping it racks up some awards in the coming months...

It's interesting how he merges jazz and classical so well. "Tony Meets Jacques" and "Number One Leader" are the highlights.

  16. I said it's better than The Queen, but it sounds more like Girl With a Pearl Earring in spirit.

Quite rightly regarded as one of THE great scores, if you don't know what I'm talking about then you've obviously accidently slipped onto the wrong forum.......X-Factor forum is somewhere else.

I'm just skimming through a few favorite cues before I head out for the evening. I'm currently playing the magnificent final 6 tracks from THE WATER HORSE: THE LEGEND OF THE DEEP. Probably James Newton Howard's last great fantasy/adventure score!

I also have on tap a cue from the STARCRAFT II video game featuring music from four separate composers. The open track is a epic symphonic feast!

I was looking for some Christmas music to play earlier in the day and I forgot that I had Intrada's release of JINGLE ALL THE WAY by David Newman! I'll spin the heroic "Howard Saves The Day" track.

Before I shut things down I'll sit back and soak up the sounds of the National Philharmonic in one of the finest recordings of all time; The CLOSE ENCOUNTERS suite from Gerhardt's RCA Classic Film Scores Series.

That's right! And spot the shameless Transformers rip-off cue, but I like it anyway. You'll hear it within 5 seconds!!! cheesy

more of the same. the same style. the same tricks.

it's not bad, but it's what he is doing (well) in the last 5 years.
