You like your 737's cool wink

What's not to like in the world's most popular and versatile aircraft? It's small and quite ballsy, very strong, fast and i totally love it, it is my favorite plane anyway wink

I am in Cyprus now and back to the no-broadband status which is driving me crazy! It took me over an hour just to read through 8-hours worth of posts and reply to some, we'll talk tomorrow probably!

    Cheers!

You make me sad -- I've never had the chance to fly on a 737 before. I've been on a 727, 717, a 747 twice, and I think I was on an Airbus once, but I can't remember that well.

727 and 717 are LEGENDARY aircrafts, so lucky you got to travel in 'em! Same goes for 747 although i am not particularly fond of that. But 727 and 717 are pure legends! Remember what kind the Airbus was exactly?

I don't know much about the Airbus models, so I really can't place it. I know it wasn't the double decker though, haha. Speaking of which, didn't they recently unveil a new model that holds more passengers than the 747?

The 747 was pretty nice. I'll probably be on it again since I'm going to Japan in the summer to visit my brother, but it'd be nice to take a 777 instead.

Take the 777; it's by far one of the most awesome wide-body planes today!

You know, I just don't like the look of the 380. She looks too bulky, like she needs to lose some weight. I still love the design of the 747, and don't think any of the jumbo jets look quite a stylish.

Very cool. Luckily I've never been on a flight that's had to do a go-around.

Demetris, you probably know the answer to this. I dropped my brother off at the airport recently and he was on a short flight. I was able to see his plane from the terminal window, but I don't know what it was. It's fuselage was fairly short -- maybe half that of a 737 -- and it had two propellers, one under each wing.

I'm trying to figure out what it is, but not having any luck. Do you (or anyone else) have a clue what it is?

Probably a De Havilland Dash 8 , it's the most popular twin-prop small airliner for most airlines.

He said he was a bit nervous at first when he saw how small it was, but it wasn't a bad flight. I think it was only a 35-45 minute connecting flight, so he wasn't on it too long. He liked the 777 (lucky bastard!) a lot more, but not the 14 hours he was on it. wink

Indeed; i am not a fan of prop-planes at all but when i have to fly them, Dash-8 would be the instant choice, it has a very good safety record and seems a rather reliable choice amidst pilots.

You're not missing anything besides very limited space (particularly leg-space), noise and lots of shakes and unstable flight. Many pilots however love 'em, they say that's the way to really feel you're flying the plane unlike the large modern airlines that "fly themselves" * wink I'd take the latter babes over anything else, anyday to be honest smile

    * basically not true at all, but as a figure of speech and if you have the basic aviation knowledge, you know what they mean wink

Haha, yeah I'd be weary of a pilot taking that seriously.

Also you've probably already seen this, but I was just searching for photos of the 787 and didn't realize there were photos of the interior. I've only ever seen shots of the exterior.

Doesn't look like you'll have to worry about cramped leg space in this beauty.

And look at the "dreamlike" flight deck (I'm not sure if this a model or an actual cockpit; it's hard to tell):

The latter is a 3D-model, one of the first to be released by BOEING themselves. I actually LOVE that plane, let me try to find that ScoreReviews thread with the same title where i posted several EXCELLENT photos of the 787 on its first roll-out (presentation) day...it's frigging beautiful and i can't wait for its first flight (currently postponed and delayed).

I did a short-hop on an American Eagle flight (a prop plane) and have a memory that I could see out the bottom of the plane through a gap in the floor. But I'm not sure whether it actually happened!! My recollection wasn't down to business class alcohol - no such thing in internal, short-hop trips in the US.

But what I DO remember from that flight was the pain that developed right between my eyes due to the lack of pressurisation in the cabin.

I've been on props about a dozen times, one of which I felt very dodgy on, a flight in Bolivia, a single prop that was struggling like feck to climb over the Andes and I got just a little bit worried when the pilot ( I was sat directly behind him ) pulled out what looked like a flight manuel, a map and put an oxegen mask on, I noticed I was feeling drowsy and looked around to see the other passengers, about eight of them, were all asleep and the plane was rattling around like a tin can full of nails in very strong turbulance. One of the nerviest flights I've ever taken.

The flight back into the capital La Paz 10 days later was brilliant though, I can see why it's considered one of the worlds most spectacular airports.

Alan, did you not get any boiled sweets to suck on?

  2. Going to have to put on my aerospace engineering hat here sad

some of you have been lumping all turbo prop aircraft and piston engine aircraft together.

    NAUGHTY crazy

Turbo prop works almost exactly the same way as a "conventional" jet engine, but instead of firing the thrust out of the exhaust, it goes into a very effective turbine that powers a shaft, that powers the propellor on the front. These are more efficient than standard jets up to about mach 0.6 hence why short range aircraft use them. Light aircraft (certainly covering all single engine non military aircraft) tend to be powered by piston engines, just like you get in your car, and are a lot more likely to go wrong!!

So next time you are moaning about the sound and vibrations in a commercial turbo prop, instead wonder at its superior efficiency as well as its ability to take off in shorter distances!!!

    rant over smile
If in doubt, let the wookie win
