Seems that there was a problem with the electronics and the pilots had to glide it down to the runway so this if as far as they went, just at the beginning of the grass area behind the runway. Of course it's very early into the speculation and the final investigation will reveal exactly what happened but if that scenario is true, i tell you they got as lucky as F*CK!

Update on the incident with the B777 of British Airways: apparently at 600 feet and 2 miles from the airport the auto-throttle demanded an increase in thrust which never came from the engines as they didn't respond and after a couple of more failed attempt of the auto throttle to get thrust increased, the crew and specifically the pilot flying (first-officer) took manual control of the flight controls moving the throttles but too failed to get the engines to respond. The aircraft speed reduced and the aircraft descended rapidly, passing nose-high and just feet over houses, trees and cars onto the grass short of the paved runway surface. Although still very early into the investigation, it seems like a software problem.

Here are some amazing photos shot on location from an airliners.net member and are now circling around the world's media.

It's ice on air. The temperature up there is usually around -50 o C and that's the light of the sun passing through the thin ice formed when the plane is rapidly sweeping through it.
