An area that's very familiar to me...

    NEPAL

I watched a few planes take off and land from here and no, this isn't the strip I landed on.

I know this is hardly a "crash" but seriously man, how do you do these things? i KNOW about the sense of adventure and all, but it's too dangerous for me, and i am a plane nut. Imagine how it'll be for other people who aren't used to flying.

I don't know D, it's almost like I dare something to go wrong!?

I've never felt safe in really small planes, but in some of these countries it's a necessary evil.

But hey, it could have been worse, it could have been an ex-Russian military helicopter piloted by drunk Afghan vets.....you'd have to be some kind of madman or fool to go up in one of those. wink

The Boeing 787 'Dreamliner' took it's maiden flight yesterday. I think it's a lovely looking plane.

    Story here.

    Here's a question for you D ( no, I don't have an answer )

If the runway was large enough is there a limit to the size an aircraft can be built to? Or are planes like the A-380 and the giant Russian transport aircraft about as big as they can get?

From what i know, a lot of airports (including ours here in Cyprus) have been extending their runways to be able to accept the a380 in the near future (the work in Cyprus is done, in Larnaca my home-town) same goes for the Thessaloniki's airport where work is scheduled to begin soon, so i'd gather this is not a limitation for the plane manufacturers since the airports have to adapt.

But there's other limitations related to size they have to follow before a new aircraft gets approved and a certificate to fly, like the very serious wake turbulence effects, or the noise from the engines (although with today's jet marvels from companies like Pratt and Whitney or Rolls Royce, noise is much smaller of a problem than what it was in the past).

    Some info on wake turbulence:

Wake-turbulence related accidents of the past:
http://aviation-safety.net/database/dbl … ?Event=EFV with the 2001 American Airlines crash of an AirbusA300 being the most prominent.

    Thanks D.

I had a little debate with a friend today who claimed there was no limit to how large an aircraft can be built and I disagreed ( but without much of an argument to back it ).

Well, it's all part of the wing design.

If they build the biggest big-ass plane whilst still managing to somehow keep the plane's wings' size and shape within wake vortex limitations (and other limitations such as actually "lifting up" the plane and the maximum load they can take before they bend and break and other extremely technical stuff) then bravo to them, they've beaten the plane size record! So it's a trick question smile The a380 had problems with its wings designs initially, some were wake vortex related too, which prompted a 2 year delay on the final release.

Read the wake vortex article to have more arguments and understand them better smile It's all created by the size and shape of wings and the wing tips which are in many ways related to and linked with the plane's size.

And aside wake vortex from the wings there are a lot of other factors that have to do with size and need to be taken into account...like the size and number of engines needed to make that beast fly, the noise, the fuel consumption and where the overall cost of flying the plane is profitable and within logical limits, etc etc.

Always remember that what makes the plane fly are the engines and the wings. The tube (the fuselage) must be as aerodynamic as possible to have the minimum possible drag against the air but it essentially simply carried by the wings and engines.

I just had a lovely flight back to Aberdeen - with no delays whatsoever(!) - arriving just after noon. The short flight was one of my most enjoyable in recent memory - the air was crystal clear, providing absolutely lovely views of the brilliant white Britain below. I listened to some of John Barry's The Beyondness Of Things during.

    cool
