Weird. Shouldn't the whole lake be frozen if it's that cold?

Don't know...maybe it's because it's much less concentrated when it becomes a shore wave?

  1. I can't remember whether this image of a frozen lighthouse was posted earlier by me or anyone else, but it's a magical sight!

  3. I've been trying to catch sight of the ISS the last few nights but it has been so cloudy that I've only seen glimpses. Missed seeing the shuttle.

I have an android app - space junk - that shows the location of the ISS, the shuttle and the HST. For some reason it's cool to just know where they are. Yesterday the shuttle and the ISS were overlapping on the app. News silence suggests that they had docked on purpose.

    Hi Alan,

I still love this topic. Just wanted to let you know that Julian is becoming more and more a space junk as well. He has an iPhone app (not his own iPhone btw! Not yet!) that has all kind of cool stuff about the moon and the phases of the moon and position and what not. This week he added a Mars app as well.

He also joined the Youth Club of the local observatory, which is fun! And I occassionally try to spot the ISS as well. I just noticed today they changed the Heavens Above website. I can't see where I have to enter my location but perhaps the site does that automatically now?

Anyway, we are collecting more and more books on space and astronomy and I love the shows on Discovery Science, for instance Morgan Freeman Through the Wormhole. You watch those as well? Two weeks ago there was a nice documentary on the ISS too.

I see the apps are on my phone: Moon Globe and Mars Globe.
Julian just explained to me the things I can do with the Moon Globe app. Fun!

Edit: does it matter that I have iPhone and you have HTC?
Anyway, I see some free apps, like Satellite Watcher.

Damn, Blood Color (Red Cliff) is awesome!
  4. "Space Junk" is the name of the Android app!

I've had a look at the Heaven's Above site - http://www.heavens-above.com/ - and you can input your location manually under the Configuration section. Either select from a map or selec a country, then town to as close to your own location as possible. That should get your location back.

    Thanks!

And I'll look for the apps tonight, because Maykel has to enter his password for the app store. Looks like there are many to choose from about satellites and stuff.

Don't forget that it's an Android app and not an iPhone app. I got it from Android Market.

    Hi Alan,
tonight we can spot the ISS at 47 degrees, which should be good I think. The sky will be crystal clear too. smile

We searched for some nice apps last night and Maykel found an awesome app!! It's called Sky View (from iPhone). On your screen you see camera view and, like a watermark kind of thing, the stars and constellations, plus the location of the planets, moon and satellites. It looks so great! You can walk around and move the phone in different directions and you can see where all the things in space are, plus the orbits and everything.

Sounds similar to the app I have for my phone. It can be quite helpful finding your way around the sky. A bit like Google's Sky Map.

Does it mix camera view with the sky map as well? I think that looks awesome. To just sit in your living room and see all the planets and stuff floating around you.

This weekend in the Netherlands the amateur observatories are open for public. You can see the moon and Saturn! And perhaps Jupiter and Mercury. We are planning to go on friday evening. But, two weeks of sunshine here but guess what days it will be clouded and rainy? Yep, this weekend. I hope the predictions will change!! I've never looked through a telescope before.
  6. These apps are good. They are showing a whole bunch of planets, the moon and the sun all lined up in the same region of sky. It is somehow nice to know some of the more distant planets are in the region of sky I am looking at even though I can't see them.

I had a telescope when I was young and used to look for things like Saturn with its rings, Jupiter and its 4 big moons and look at the craters on the moon. I still have it and brought it out last summer for David to look at Jupiter.

We did toy with the idea of buying a better one since David showed some interest - but then I realised I was wanting it more than he was so I put it off.

  7. I did think of doing astronomy at university when I was looking at my options. But it was too bedded in maths and physics rather than just looking at stars that that put me off.

    biggrin
    How annoying!

It was the same with me and archaeology. Once they made clear you don't actually get to jump into Egyptian tombs and carry a whip my interest dropped like a brick.

  8. A similar thing happened with geography at school. I wanted to do "traditional" geography which was essentially learning capital cities, mountains, etc. But they decided to test "alternative" geography and that involved learning all there is to know about new towns, and less about maps and the like.

But it didn't stop geography being my best subject at school.
