I find I have a slight problem with Debbie Wiseman scores, which is that they're often great themes, but end up feeling a bit like the same theme again and again by the end of the score. A Wiseman compilation thus is a treat, but almost no score other than ARSENE LUPIN carries me all the way.

She definitely has a tendency to write a great theme and then bludgeon you with it for the rest of the album (Wilde, Flood, and Tom's Midnight Garden all come to mind), but I don't think Haunted is as big an offender in this regard. It does use the main theme a few times, but there are 4 or 5 really nice themes there, the main theme doesn't get old for me. It's not a perfect album, but it might be my favorite of hers now.

Medal of Honor (all of them)?

    NO?

Not STAR TREK, no. But I've yet to check out the computer game scores.

You won't like'em... not because they aren't brilliant scores... they are far too noisy for you. But if your ears can handle that for an hour or so then check the MOH series and Secret Weapons out immediately!

    Ratatouille?

    Nah. Pretty cute film, though.

MG scores I've listened to and disliked or been indifferent to: INCREDIBLES, MI3, RATATOUILLE, SPEED RACER, STAR TREK, LAND OF THE LOST, LET ME IN, SUPER 8.

MG scores I like in context, but don't like to listen to alone: LOST (although ironically, I do own vol. 1 and vol. 2 since these were given to me as gifts).

MG scores I've liked on soundtrack: None.

I thought the FRINGE theme was excellent untill I found out it was composed by J. J. Abrams.
    I am extremely serious.

I'd say there is a chance that he is not the composer for you.

It would seem so, yes. But people seem to rave about him left and right -- both here and at FSM and everywhere inbetween -- so I feel like I'm missing something. Then again, I feel the same about guys like Desplat, Shore, Barry etc. -- also beloved composers -- so what can you do?

Yup... Super 8 works much better as a 45 minute listen. However, I think I still need to re-order or combine a few cues together. "We’ll Fix It In Post-Haste" should come after "Family Matters." Too bad there isn't a concert suite of the "We’ll Fix It In Post-Haste" theme (I guess that's the Super 8 theme) and "Alice's Theme." Is Williams the only one still writing concert themes for the soundtrack?

    Vertical Limit - JNH

    Most enjoyable.
  2. Dressed to Kill - Pino Donaggio

Never mind the thriller bits, I'll listen to this score for the romantic writing.

Sometimes it's okay to not be mainstream.

Same here. ( except that the 1st JNH score I bought was ALIVE ), Love it.

  4. Lords of Illusions - Simon Boswell

My first Boswell score, and it isn't that bad. Bits of noir saxophone and large horror cues dominate the album.

"160 BPM" from Angels & Demons has got to be one of the most entertaining pieces of music that Hans has ever written.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

NP : THE DARK CRYSTAL - Trevor Jones

A brilliant fantasy score. I've gone for the old album arrangement rather than the complete original tracks.

Anyone else here remember how crushingly disappointing his score to LABYRINTH was?

NP : AMELIA - Gabriel Yared

I played this a few days back too, it's a gorgeous score, Yared very rarely lets me down.

    Troy - Yared

    Some good stuff in this.

Previously - A Time to Kill - Goldenthal

So good. What a shame he isn't scoring much any more. This type of score for this type of film is sorely missed.

I don't play A TIME TO KILL enough. It's really a good album (challenging, as always). I should really have another "Goldenthal by year" walkthrough again.

    Oh yes, for sure!
I remember in 1986 thinking "cool, another Henson movie with Trevor Jones back at the musical helm. This will be huge!" Then being very sad about what I eventually heard in the cinema.
Although I still enjoyed the film and a couple of the Bowie numbers.

    Final Fantasy - Elliot Goldenthal

The Big Mac amongst his scores, yes, but an occasional Big Mac can be very satisfying.

His most impressive score to date and a true modern classic. Unreachable.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

    Once Around - James Horner

This little-known gem contains some of his most touching music - the theme in "A Passage of Time" is as beautiful as any he's written (though - perhaps not surprisingly - I think I recognise it from somewhere else!)

Yes. A variation of the migration theme from Land Before Time if I recall.

  5. NP: The Green Lantern (James Newton Howard)

why do I hear such an amazing James Newton Howard in the track "We're Going to Fly Now" and I don't hear nothing of that same quality in the rest? For me this track and "Welcome to OA" are the only tracks that listen like the good old orchestral JNH, the rest is just his SALT phase and weaker

Plus, the Goldsmith theme isn't working either

    Another wasted opportunity
    waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh
