  1. FOREVER YOUNG - JERRY GOLDSMITH

My booklet of the LLL release is printed all wrong. When I got Speed it had the same problem but I could rearrange the pages myself. Here it doesn't seem to be possible.

Oh well it's not like it's one of my preferred of Jerry anyway. Only a couple of cues stand out.

Every time I see that title, I don't think of Goldsmith, but Alphaville. Does the song feature in the movie?

Alphaville, ha! What did they have? 3 hits? But boy, they're punk

  3. Jerry Goldsmith - Rambo: First Blood Part II

Simply amazing action score. It's the fun one of the three. Because of the dramatic and emotional character, I tend to prefer the first score of the series. Since yesterday I own an original copy of the Silva (ie. expanded) release of this one. Great to have it. I'll need the third score and I am settled smile

    Bubba Ho-Tep (Tyler)

Two thirds of this is truly awful. The other third, i.e. whenever the theme is playing, is bloody awesome. Such a simple theme, but I can hear it again and again in different variations, and I never seem to tire of it.

The most emotional and the one I get the most kick out of will always be Rambo III, than I'd put this one and First Blood last. First Blood is mostly suspense and the one theme and I'm a sucker for action and melody, especially the more developed kind in the sequels. I only own part 2 and 3.

  6. I own First Blood (the complete Intrada edition) and part two. I intend to buy Part 3 as well.

  7. While at it:

    Jerry Goldsmith - First Blood

Brilliant angry film score. Perfect for a PTSD-suffering soldier like Rambo is in the first movie.

    NP: THE WOLFMAN (Danny Elfman)

Elfman channels Kilar while maintaining his own voice. Challenging at times, but ultimately rewarding.

The Comfort of Strangers - Angelo Badalamenti

Two killer themes, the main theme and especially the one in 'Preludium' which is surely the best Morricone theme that Morricone never wrote.

    W.E. - Abel Korzeniowski

Been a while since I played a score this often in such a short span. 5 or 6 cues that I keep replaying (mainly 1st 3 and last 2).

I enjoyed this. It has the kind of pulsing, loopy sound that jive well with me while I'm working.

Really good music for a so-so movie. I recommend that no-one watches the movie so you can retain the romantic feeling of the score.

I remember the score at the time it was released and how reviewers weren't so hot over the retread of the various Irish/Scottish elements that James Horner was doing.

But now he's not doing them anymore, I'm sure they would rate it higher. I mean the score does at least have some originality to it, it's the blend of synths and the celtic that works well together IMO.

Granted I'd rather listen to Titanic / Braveheart but there's something here that makes me return to it every once in a while.

  10. I just watched W./E. (what an awkward title) and I must say the score is probably the best part of that whole film. I think Abel Korzeniowski made the perfect follow-up to A Single Man, another gloriously romantic score.

Parts of the score do sound like something Phillip Glass and/or Shigeru Umebayashi would compose, though.

  11. Seriously, there's a whole section in that film that could have come from In the Mood for Love, and another that could have come from Mishima - A Life in Four Chapters.

    Shiloh - Joel Goldsmith

Really lovely music. Reminiscent of the gentle Americana scores of his father from the 60s and 70s (Flim Flam Man et al).

I was hoping for more of those elements than this album delivers. There's one track on there that I really like - I think it's called "The New World" or something like that. The rest of the score did nothing for me.

NP - ALL THE KING'S MEN - Horner

    First listen.
