  1. I've been listening to recent documentary scores all day.

    I started out with PAPA S'EN VA EN GUERRE, by Maximilien Mathevon. I think it's his best work to date. I liked the theme, as well as "En attendant papa," "De retour," and "Pour l'avenir." I'm a fan of elegant repetitive piano.

    Next I played PLANET OCEAN by Armand Amar. This album is a little long, but there are some good highlights along the way. "I Come from the Ocean," "Planet Ocean," "Coral Tree," and "Jellyfish" were some of my favorites this time through.

    I'm finishing it up with Sarah Class's very good AFRICA. This is a very strong album. It would be easier to list the tracks that didn't impress me than the ones that did, but I'll just mention the ones that really struck me: "Rivers and Falls," "Beauty of Aguillus Sands," "Up in the Clouds," and "River of Life." These tracks are fantastic! Most of the rest of the album is great, too. This is my favorite score of the year so far.

    Metsan Tarina? That was one of the best 2012 scores !
    Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  3. NP: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Patrick Doyle)

    What uninspiring dribble. It's been a while since I heard it, but now I know why I didn't remember a thing of it. Jeezus. It even started to get on my nerves. Then Thor was at least entertaining because of the solid theme.

    NP : STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK - John Williams



    A little known film, the score is not bad I suppose.
    On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt
  6. KON TIKI - Johan Soderqvist

    This is a nice score, though it is overlong and kind of dull in places, IMO. You could probably cut tracks 17-27 without losing anything that adds significantly to the score. Still, it has a nice theme, and the end credits cue is quite good.
  7. IRON MAN 3 - Brian Tyler

    There's something almost James Bondian about that main theme. Anybody else picking up on that? After listening to "Dive Bombers" I decided that Brian Tyler would probably do alright scoring of Bond film.

    Incidentally when listening to that - very nice - score I pondered how a "James Bond" score by Brian Tyler might work out.

    Got mail from Norway today. cheesy Now I made a playlist consisting of the score (Preserverance) followed by the songs featured on the original release. (Capitol)

    For me one of HZ finest scores!

    It's not really my thing. I never got used to the warped nature of some of those tracks.

    NP: OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL - Danny Elfman

    This is perfectly adequate. I don't have a problem with it. It just doesn't stick in the memory. And every time I hear the opening melody to "O, Canada" I can't help but roll my eyes. Not because there's anything wrong with "O, Canada," but because that's all I can think of when I hear those four notes. And they pop up so often in this score! They keep filling me with Canadian pride, which is uncomfortable given my non-Canadianness.

    NP: Remember Me - Olivier Deriviere

    I loved the themes and orchestrations right from the get go.
    But I too had to get used to some of the "jitter, jutter, stutter" effects and sonic manipulations of various kinds the first couple of plays. But now I accept it and I "get it" and totally LOVE IT!
    It's such an amazing audio adventure to go on. One that keeps me wanting to return to.
    Deliviere has done a thoroughly impressive thing here!
    The only other score of his I own is Alone In The Dark which is good but nowhere near the heights of this one!

  20. THE CROODS - Alan Sylvestri

    Although there isn't a track shorter than 1:13, it feels like most of these tracks are actually multiple cues sewn together. There are some really jarring shifts in this album, and they come often enough that it makes the listening experience pretty choppy. There are some nice tracks at the end, though. Very nice.

    JACK THE GIANT SLAYER - John Ottman

    I remember liking this a little when it came out. I don't know what I was thinking. Listening again to it tonight, it's just noise. The first and last tracks are nice, but I can do without the rest.

    Wonderful music! The Main Theme sounds so much like Vangelis, it's often attributed to him.
    Same year as Close Encounters and Star Wars.

    It's really good. I have this on an EP somewhere ( an EP is the same size as a 45rpm single ) it had 4 tracks from the soundtrack album.

    Ugh! I don't even want to waste my time talking about it. vomit

    That's expensive!

    And what an irritating way of releasing a soundtrack. Presumably they deliberately didn't choose the best tracks for the actual album, so they can release them this way.

    Did you honestly not find anything to like Erik? Are you sure you aren't prejudiced towards a non-Williams score that was so iconicaly linked with Williams?
