Anyone else think that ASM2 is the most disappointing Zimmer score (on album) in recent memory?

Absolutely not - I think it's his most creative score in years! Not everything works, but a lot of it does, and it's very refreshing to hear.

The main Spider-man theme is cool, but tragically undeveloped and appears too few times.

I kind of agree with this. The score needed a big suite-like arrangement of that theme, which I thought "You're That Spider Guy" would be, but alas no. However, the action cue "Cold War" from the deluxe edition contains several forthright statements of the theme, and is for all intents and purposes what I think of as "the theme cue" from that score. Maybe you haven't heard that one?

The Electro vocal stuff is creepy in a dumb, annoying way that makes me want to turn it off. I don't know that I've EVER said that before about anything Zimmer wrote. I can't fathom how ANYONE from the director to the studio to the test audiences thought this was a good idea. The film reviews generally seem to think the Electro vocals are just as dumb as they sound on the album. I didn't know this was Spider-Man, The Musical.

Disagree completely. I think it's - well, "a stroke of genius" would be taking it too far, but it's a clever idea that only works slightly less well in execution than it did on paper. I think it's the most striking and unique thing about that score. And the combination of woodwinds and old-fashioned baroque harmonies with the hardcore electronica makes for a pronounced and effective contrast. Much better than whatever Henry Jackman was aiming for in The Winter Soldier. And then you've got a cue like "We're Best Friends" with those beautiful Signs-like puffing flutes, a cue with more genuine warmth and heart than anything we've heard from Zimmer in a long, long time.

And in conclusion, I just thought people might get a kick out of a fanatical Zimmer fan disliking a Zimmer score that more traditional critics seem to enjoy, so have at the irony: I really hate this score. I blame the film writers and Zimmer's "Magnificent Six" collaborators more than I blame HZ himself, but he IS responsible for the end product and he let me down this time. Hope Interstellar gets him back on track!

You're not the first "fanatical Zimmer fan" I've noticed who doesn't like this score. I've observed a pretty consistent trend where people who liked Man of Steel find TASM 2 off-putting or disappointing (including a lot of Zimmer's established fanbase), whereas people who thought MoS was a dull dronefest find TASM 2 to be refreshing and interesting (including a lot of people who usually aren't that keen on Zimmer). I didn't hate MoS but I definitely find myself in the latter camp, and I'm a little dismayed that it's been getting this oddly polarized reaction.

    Anyways, just my thoughts...
  2. As Thor said.
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  3. I love Amazing Spider-Man 2, I didn't hate Man of Steel, but I didn't love it either. But I have to say that the album presentation of this score is far from perfect, not necessarily in terms of chosen tracks (though there should be more of the main theme), but in terms of sequencing. While I get the general idea was to create the contrast between the character at his most human and heroic and the villains (most of the electronics are left for the villains!), it makes the album that more disjointed.

Hans has had problems with album selection for quite a while. How much better would have Sherlock Holmes 2 been (which I hate to say, because I was on the recording session of the suite!) on album, had it been not so disjointed and without a sense of narrative whatsoever? There's even a very cool ostinato from the beginning of the film, nowhere to be heard on album.

When it comes to sequencing and album, I believe his best album is The Last Samurai. It basically has a film structure (three acts which a very clear arc) and while the film sequence is nowhere to be seen, it tells the story of the film better than the sadly naive (if well-meaning) film does. The Last Samurai is the perfect proof of Thor's album presentation theory.

I do love the orchestral part of the Electro material. Wish it were just that, without the weird vocals. The orchestral part is reminiscent (in a pleasant way) of the "Hoist the Colours" theme suite from the end credits of At World's End. Zimmer is particularly strong in that mode, IMO.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

Nope! I think it's Zimmer's most accomplished, inspired and satisfying scores since Inception and The Dark Knight. Lots of themes... Even those long lined themes that people like me love. There's even some nice thematic development... Electro's theme, for instance, is used in a variety of ways thought out the scores playing time. Zimmer picks apart and plays with Spidey's theme nicely throughout... AND it even plays the roll of the love theme as well.

There's the battle between organic and synthetic, which is Zimmer's way of conveying the fight between good and evil in the film. There is a lot to admire in The Amazing Spider Man 2. You can really sense the arc of the story while you listen to the score on its own. It's super entertaining! I love it actually!

Nicely described my thoughts on this score right there Erik. Well said!
  4. So what do people think of the Filmtracks review? tongue

Pawel, you can't be happy. Neither am I. I think it's his worst review in ages. Completely shuts his ears to the score's good points and uses the music as a basic excuse for a general diatribe against Zimmer and his methodology. He complains that the main theme is underused and doesn't mention "Cold War" or any number of other cues that use it frequently.

Giving it a worse rating than Captain America: The Winter Soldier and 300: Rise of an Empire is pretty funny, actually.
  5. It does not reflect my view of things. As much as I value Christian as a reviewer, when it comes to Zimmer he appeares biased.

  6. Well, I found it quite hilarious. It's still a bit of an improvement over Man of Steel - at least no mention of steel drums this time biggrin

  7. Seriously though... if Hans was stupid enough to sue Clemmensen for libel... he'd have a won case here.

  8. I love how the Spider-Man 2 review has gotten a lot of backlash from Clemmensen's usual supporters. They finally started to notice that his hate for Zimmer started getting very irrational.

  9. I think a lot of people, myself included, were surprised by just how refreshing and different that score is compared to Zimmer's recent superhero scores...so to hear Clemmensen use many of the same descriptors on it as he did for Man of Steel just felt off to a lot of people. It honestly feels like he had half of that review written before he heard a note of the score.

I very rarely read Clemmensen's reviews. I read his SPIDEY 2 review and thought it made it's points reasonably but, like I said, I rarely, and I mean very rarely, read his reviews and even less so anything Zimmer related.

I like Zimmer's score but I've not heard it in context with the film.

I've been trying to wrestle with whether I like or don't like the dialogue in The Amazing Spider-Man 2: The Musical - especially in "My Enemy" - and reading this has, I think, now decided things for me.

And now thinking of "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General" isn't helping either.

Oh, if only the "Magnificent Six" would have gone for wordless vocals like every other Zimmer score in his career...then "My Enemy" would have been one of the most kick-ass villain themes in the history of Hollywood. IMO. Musically it is absolutely riveting. I find the marriage of old-school "baroque" instrumentations and modern electronics and fierce choir chants to be pulse-poundingly thrilling.

But.... dat cheese! Perhaps Hans himself cannot understand the awkwardness of what he created, simply because English is not his first language, and thus the vocals do not quite strike him in the same "this is a musical" way they do for native English speakers? Just idle speculation...
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!
  12. I think Pharrell started improvising some stuff to get a hold of the theme, then suddenly realized that that's what the character thinks, put the idea through Zimmer, then through Webb and both fell in love with the idea.

Regarding K2 -- one of my personal HZ favourites -- the suite concept which you seem to dislike is actually one of the reasons I dig it so much. It taps into my whole love of concept albums. For someone who listens to soundtracks from start to finish (instead of picking or skipping tracks), this is perfect! But I can understand how it's annoying for those who don't.

well I rather don't have it, considering it's mostly tracks glued together, but it does make the listen in a way a lot more interesting

Interestingly the suites were edited by nobody else than Robert Townson!
