My favourite episode and score of the old series!
    Thanks!

  1. Yes, I watched that too. Very well done!
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  2. The Martian (2015)

As was to be expected not as good as the novel but still a decent film overall. They put most of the psychology out of it and pushed it - to my taste - a bit too much to the comedy side. It doesn't really fit the subject IMO.

Anyway some - in this context - cheesy choices of song here: "Starman" by Bowie and "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor. Is it just me or does the score by Gregson Williams sound a great deal like Morricone's Mission to Mars?

I really liked the film. And I just LOVED the line "I'm just going to have to science the SHIT out of this".

I loved the film, and I loved its lighter moments dispersed between the dramatic arcs. It was nice to see an epic sci-fi film get a family-friendly approach without being cheesy (well, except for a few lines, namely the one you mentioned). It seems Scott has mellowed in his old age. I prefer this to the mind-numbingly boring -yet gorgeous- Blade Runner.

It wasn't cheesy. It was a great line. A true testament to man's ingenuity and drive. Not to be outdone by circumstances seemingly beyond any mortal comprehension, he knows himself bolstered and protected by universal laws that will ALWAYS be the same. It's spitting in the eye of destiny and stomping on God's foot.
Fuck certain death. We're sciencing the shit out of this.
    LOVE that line!

Doesn't sound cheesy to me either. Not seen the film yet and not read the novel either.

Good to hear some positivity about a Scott film from people other than Thor ( no offense old chum smile ), I really want to see it now.

p.s. Never found Blade Runner mind numbingly boring tongue

    cRIPES BUTB I'm PISSED.

    NARCOS - Season 2

Just finished the latest series of this bloody brilliant show. Couldn't wait for the latest series and it is just as tense, gripping and down-right terrifying as the last. I recommend this to everyone.

Sure, more than a little dramatic licence is taken here (for anybody who hasn't seen it, it's about the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar and the efforts of the DEA and Columbian authorities to take him down), but the attention to detail is astounding - it's filmed in the same districts of Colombia that it all originally took place. High production values, brilliant performances, violent as fuck, and it's interspersed with archive footage that allows the show to further prove the shocking events that took place during the period depicted.

It's been left open ended and I hear it's been commissioned for a further two series. Be interesting where it goes, although it's pretty obvious what it will focus on.

I'm not squeamish in the least, but I'm a little done with violence for lascivious shock's sake (the torture scenes in Sons Of Anarchy; the burning alive of children in Game Of Thrones. You know what I mean.). So, comparing Narcos' violence to that, how would you rate it?
Rough but "functional"? Or violence- porn?

I agree. Season 2 was just as strong as Season 1. Looking forward to the next season already.

NARCOS. I want to give this series a go. Ploughing through Boardwalk Empire right now which I'm enjoying a lot, nearly through season 2.

As for Game of Thrones, watched season 6 a few weeks ago, I'm still loving it, just gets better and better IMO. Looking forward to the last season.

I've still yet to see any of those series so I can't compare.

But the violence in Narcos is not gratuitous at all. It's more the nature and context of it. Nothing extremely graphic but quite realistic 'gang warfare' style stuff. Assassinations and messy confrontations... that sort of thing.

    Enjoyed this SO much.
The period flavour, the acting, the music.
Absolutely fabulous series, and one of the best in recent history for me.

Just finished season 2. It really is brilliant. Agree with everything you said.

    THE FLY

David Cronenburg's version, it's been so long since I watched this ( it's on Movie Mix right now, shame about the bloody adverts which is why I'm writing now ), mein gott but Geena Davis was beautiful despite wearing awful 80's shoulder pad fashions.

    THE FLY 2

    Propaaaaahly not loyal.

Some great score moments by Chris Young is the only big-up I can give to this rubbish.

  4. Chappie (2015)

This film kind of flew under my radar although I bought and loved Zimmer's score. So this is basically a remake of Short Circuit pimped up with RoboCop and manga style gangsters. The characters are as surprising as a cheeseburger at MCD's. They are stereotyped to death. Instead of the cuteness and charm of Ally Sheedy we get a completely unnecessary splatter scene. Anyway the film is mildly entertaining on a popcorn level.
Hans Zimmer's score on the other hand is a whole different matter. It shines. It elevates the film. It's easily one of my favourite Zimmer scores. And one of my favourite electronica scores. Zimmer on top of his game.

Yeah, that pretty much sums up my view on the film and music too.

  5. The Force Awakens (2015)
There are many things that this film gets right: The cast, the characters, the visuals, the humour and most of all the music. There are some genuinely great scenes. And one has to admit: Aliens don’t speak French anymore. Instead interstellar mobster clans speak Chinese or Russian.
If only the story was better, less rehash, less fan service, more ambition. Fan service for older and newer nerds: Not only Han and Leia return. So do Padme and Anakin.
The one thing I really hate is the nonchalance way they dispose of a character as iconic as Han Solo. His death should have been a sacrifice, and it should have been handled with dignity in the aftermath.
Also I miss the soft-edged wipes.

  6. I'm not really sure where you see "nonchalance" in the film's treatment of Solo's death? I thought that look between Rey and Leia at the end was pretty perfect. No words necessary, not even a shake of the head, but Leia knew just from the expression on Rey's face. I guess if anyone got a raw deal it was (as usual) Chewie. Who's going to comfort the poor guy? sad
  7. Someone who just popped up and barely knew Han. Chewie walked right past her. Missed opportunity. Where is the memorial scene? Where is Williams' requiem version of Han Solo and the Princess?
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.

Watched this last night on the Sony Movie Channel and thoroughly enjoyed it. Shore's score adds such a strong emotional impact to a movie that features such strong performances from the two leads (I have always thought John Getz' performance was pants).

I remember seeing this in the cinema and hearing the noises of disgust coming from some. But there were some genuine laughs too.

    I'm with you.
I think it was handled with grace and perfection. And I found that wordless exchange between Rey and Leia incredibky moving. Anything more would simply have been too self-conscious, sentimental wallowing.

  9. Exactly. If they had milked it any more than they had it would have just been even more fanservice in a film that was already dangerously heavy on that front.
  10. Just finished watching THE JUNGLE BOOK (2016) and I am disappointed that I can't get that time back. Many times I just wished that I could have watched the animated version. Although Debney did use some of the old themes well, all the songs were terrible and Debney's original score was too overbearing; especially in the opening 30 minutes or so.

Definitely a score that works better away from the movie, for me.

  11. Warcraft (2016)

Formula sword and sorcery epic with so much CGI that real actors actually feel displaced in it. Why not go the whole way and make it a full blown animation? Mildly entertaining.
Djawadi's score serves the film well and stands out favourably in a few moments. As a whole though I don't think I'll need this music on CD.

  12. The CGI routinely outperforms the humans in that film. I swear the best performance by far is from that lead orc guy. biggrin

THE JUNGLE BOOK was a massive disappointment. Not that I had big expectations in the first place. I was also skeptical to WARCRAFT, despite being directed by one of the most promising sci fi directors of his generation (Duncan Jones). And by God, was it bad. Both of these succumb to CGI hell.
    I am extremely serious.
