NP: The Edge - Jerry Goldsmith

The main theme pretty much dominates the entire score but, boy, is it a fantastic one! One of my favourites from the man.

The Great Gatsby - Craig Armstrong

Nothing earth-shattering but a very classy score all round. 'Dream Violin' in particular is sublime.

    Thor 2 - Brian Tyler

The theme is pretty good but again with Tyler, his music - particularly his action music - is just becoming so relentlessly, depressingly generic that it's almost unlistenable now. At least half this score can easily be scrapped from any future listens, though I can't say with any certainly that there'll be any of those.

    Vibes - James Horner

A curiosity I guess but even at this length it's a bit of a slog.

^ One if Horner's best, IMO.

  3. Hamlet - Ennio Morricone

Now that I don't have to write about the damn thing I can finally listen to the music. This one...well, it sure was effective in context, but on album it's not really to my taste. The "Hamlet" and "Ophelia" melodic pieces are nice enough, but all the suspense music...especially "The Ghost"... sleep

Will listen to Doyle's afterwards. More my kind of thing.
  4. "The King Is Dead" is the stand-out track for me on Morricone's Hamlet.

  5. You actually like "The Ghost"? I can understand enjoying the moodiness of the rest of the score (it does paint a certain picture), but that cue... vomit

No, I pretty much dislike all of Morricone's HAMLET, although I do remember there being a glimpse or two of his melodic sense. It's been YEARS since I owned and listened to it.

  6. NP: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) - Hans Zimmer & company

Jon's fine review inspired me to once again listen to this one.

EDIT: I . love . this . score! I listened to the special edition and there is not a single minute here that I do not thoroughly enjoy. This time I was amazed how much Zimmer pays tribute to James Horner: The main theme, the synth choir and the solo piano sound quite Horneresque. Great score!
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.

It is indeed. What a fantastic, rousing score.

The movie, however, is one of the very, very few movies I couldn´t watch til the end. After 1492, it looked like the cheapest TV movie ever, and I´ve never given it another chance.

I once GMed a short roleplaying campaign where I used this as the campaign´s main theme for a while. After some time the players got very used to the theme. Then at one of the adventures they started an epic journey to save the world (don´t they always?). When the moment came where their ship set sail I played Badelt´s "I don´t belong here" from "The Time Machine". They all had goosebumps.

So, to everybody who loves "The Edge", take a look at "The Time Machine". You won´t regret it.

Exactly the same experience as Ralph and James, I think I might have made it half way through. Scott's 1492, on the other hand is rather underrated.

It's slowly growing on me. The Spidey theme thrills more and more on every appearance. The Electro stuff is incredibly engaging and addictive. I just wish I didn't have to be subjected to those horrid, depressing lyrics to get to the good stuff. There are good fucking reasons that 98% of my music listening is film scores, and one of the biggest is that I hate having to listen to words!!!. tongue
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!
  9. It's funny, I don't like it when the lyrics in opera are in English. I much prefer it when I can't understand a word of it and the singing becomes more musical and integrates more with the instruments (if that makes any sense.)

The best sex thriller score since BASIC INSTINCT, IMO. Especially love the electronica bits.

You should give Whispers in the Dark a listen. It's the closest Thomas Newman ever got to scoring a horror film.

That's exactly how I feel about both ASM2 and opera itself. Except in the very rare circumstance that the lyrics are something the personally inspire me. Which, unfortunately, the ASM2 lyrics do not.

Erik and Timmer, you guys are nuts. Vibes is an absolute snooze fest. Found it a real struggle to get through. Quite possibly one of the most simplistic scores of Horner's career.
Not that simple is necessarily bad but in this case it's certainly boring IMO.

Bonnie and Clyde - John Debney

This has got just a little bit more life in it at least! Quite a bit of diversity and a very entertaining if not spectacular score overall.

Tie Me Up Tie Me Down! - Ennio Morricone

Wonderful, at times infectious score. A lot better than I remember it actually. Morricone and Almodovar were a great, though tragically brief combination.

Thanks. Not too keen on horror film music in general, but the concept of T. Newman and sex thriller sounds exciting. Btw, he got pretty darn close to savage brutality in the track "The Terrible Death of Mr. Delacroix"(?) in THE GREEN MILE.

NP: LE CINEMA DE... (Michel Polnareff)

Wonderful compilation with multiple tracks from each film -- often French exploitation-type fare from the 60s and 70s. A whole range of styles, from soothing ballads to spaghetti western to jazz to baroque noodlings etc. cool

Anyone that can take woodwinds, strings (bowed and strummed) and percussion and make it sound like a f__king rainforest is most definitely NOT writing simple music. Vibes is one of the most original, relaxing and satisfying albums of Horner's career. You have to be in a particular mood or state of mind to completely enjoy it but if you need something to calm the nerves then Vibes is the perfect remedy.
