So Hans Zimmer never scored Frost/Nixon, Man of Steel or Matchstick Men?

Where do you hear hip-hop in any of those scores?
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!
  1. I don't hear hiphop neither in any of these of scores or in Amazing Spider-Man 2 for that matter (Pharrell's chanting isn't exaclty hip-hop/rap, really), but if you listen to something like THere He Is, you will clearly hear Hans' voice right there. The woodwind writing is taken from Zimmer's comedy writing. There is a lot of his own voice there.

I Need to Know is basically the Krypton theme reworked in a fresher and more organic sound, as well smile

I was referring specifically to the English chanting. I refuse to believe that idea came from Zimmer. It's so jarring and distracting it pretty much takes a whole star off the score for me. Would be a 4 if the chanting was wordless. As-is, it's barely a 3.

I also find the entire score to be very disjointed and uncohesive compared to most of Zimmer's output. Man of Steel had a consistent sonic palette from beginning to end. ASM2 is all over the place stylistically. But I think there is something wrong with my ears because all the elements for it to be a great score are there...it's just not clicking for me somehow.

Oh well, at least Interstellar is coming up soon. No way he won't knock that one out of the park.

What if the chanting was in a language you couldn't understand?

Anyway, I don't see a difference between the chanting and let's say choral whispering during a horror score. IMO, the chanting is fantastic and is just one of the many complex layers associated with Electro's theme.

You could look at it like that. Or, you could say that Man of Steel was really monotonous and repetitive and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has much more variety and creativity. Depends on your perspective.

To be fair, there's a slight difference since choral whispering in horror scores are usually spoken in languages most audiences won't recognise, which itself adds to the effect ("They're saying something, but I'm not sure what it is, that makes me feel uneasy.")
  3. The choral whispering in horror films isn't any language, really. It's about hissing more than anything smile I don't think it's even got any lyrics written on the score, probably English or Italian for "whispers".

  4. And it's a pretty late, though not film-music-related discovery, something has to be said for the Polish avant-garde of the 1950s smile

Agreed. For me, it's a cross between the musical CHESS, Sparks, a sprinkling of "Bolero" and obviously the basic idea behind the "Deshi Basara" riff in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.

I absolutely dig it -- the best part of the score, IMO!
    I am extremely serious.

The best sex thriller score since BASIC INSTINCT, IMO. Especially love the electronica bits.

  8. NP: The Black Hole (1979) - John Barry

I got me a new sound system for my living room, the Magnat Sounddeck 400 btx, an active HiFi speaker system. One day a flat screen TV set will be connected to this deck. With my old tube TV that refuses to quit smile this is not possible for lack of space. Anyway, my ipod classic, connected via docking station, sounds just beautiful through this device. The sweeping sounds of The Black Hole is just the score to celebrate this new aquisition.
