  1. That theme doesn't feature much in the score overall but it is another good score from Preisner. Apparently the film is a documentary about a couple of German Jews whose lives took different paths before they were reunited.

Consequently, the music isn't particularly cheery!

It's not every day you get a score that combines Henry Mancini and Hans Zimmer, though. I guess this one can join Tyler's Children of Dune in that respect. tongue

Yeah, Ottman being accused of aping Inception gets at least one experimental listen for me...it's too weird-sounding to pass up. Wish it were more like Jack the Giant Slayer though...that thing was kick-ass.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!
  2. I'll always have The Usual Suspects.

What's Larry Groupe up to these days, anyway?
  3. I know that wasn't a serious question, but he did a pretty decent score called Straw Dogs a couple years ago. Very tense Herrmann-ish thriller score, not exactly easy listening, but quite accomplished nevertheless.

According to two online sources, 2014 and 2015 will bring (pending replacements):

2015 Sleeping with the Lion (pushed back since at least 2011)
    2014 Bayou Tales
    2014 Fearless
    2014 La Migra
    2014 Space Samurai: Oasis
    2014 Tao of Surfing

And Deconstruction Red (no year yet; pushed back since at least 2010)

Meet Joe Black - Th. Newman

    Rather good.

I think it's time for you to revisit some of Newman's work from the 90s. I've yet to read a review of Red Corner.

    Little Children - Th. Newman

Wonderful, one of my favourites by him.
  6. It's great. Great film, too.

    Man, this is outrageously beautiful!

    The Monuments Men - Desplat

Still one of the best scores to come out in recent times.
I just saw the film at last which I thought wasn't half bad.
Desplat's cameo was nice. He did a fine job!
  8. I really liked the score myself (though the movie not so much, I think it had serious tone problems; Desplat was cool though!), but I think it's another Desplat score that takes the score of the year crown as of now and I have doubts if something will be better (no, I don't think it's Godzilla, even after seeing the film) - The Grand Budapest Hotel.

speaking of Hans Zimmer and superhero project

NP: Megamind - Hans Zimmer & Lorne Balfe

It's an excellent score for a movie about a supervillian turned anti-hero. A heartbreakingly gorgeous love theme, pumping action theme, mostly orchestral, as expected. Very enjoyable.

NP : V FOR VENDETTA - Dario Marianelli

One of my favourite scores of the 00's, bloody excellent! ( I shall thank watching the excellent trailer to INTERSTELLER for influencing this play today )

  9. I always liked that album -- in particular the strategic use of source tracks (in particular 'Bird Gehrl', what a song!).

    NP: The Counselor (Daniel Pemberton)

I've seen next to no discussion of this, but like the film, I find myself strangely compelled by it. There's a sense of longing and regret to it that is so strong. 'All These Worlds', 'A Glorious Woman', 'Wire to the Head' and 'Desert Star Septic' stand out as the highlight, but the album overall is one I find myself listening to often.

    NP: VISITORS (Philipp Glass)

Not quite sold -- minimalism is on/off to me, depending on conceptualization -- but I want to give it a few more shots.

Have you tried Glass symphonies Low and Heroes based on the work of David Bowie and Brian Eno?

    I haven't, no. Sounds intriguing.

They're both on Spotify. Give them a try.

The new recording of Low (Dennis Russell Davies/Basel Symphony Orchestra) is a considerable improvement on the first. Have a listen to Itaipu while you're at it.

    I didn't know. I'll check it out.

As for ITAIPU, I've long said what an awesome work it is, my favourite version is the Robert Shaw but the recording is so damned quiet, this is a work that demands to be played LOUD!

NP: Amazing Spider-Man 2 by Pharrell Williams, Johnny Marr, etc

It's interesting and different enough that I still want to keep listening to it and try to figure out what everyone else sees in it...despite feeling slightly tormented while listening...

I couldn't care less what everyone is saying about it, I found it incredibly boring and haven't felt any need to listen to it again. The film looks like a pile of wank too.
  10. But you still refuse to give Hans a credit for it? wink

  11. Hans Zimmer - Hannibal

Lovely and classy. Earlier I listened to Jerry Goldsmith's Legend (saw the film in its director's cut - that means Goldsmith score reinstated) and Thelma and Louise. Something of a Ridley Scott music day for me smile

Talking of Zimmer's Spidey 2 ( which I quite like ) there's a brilliant 30 seconds from the 1 minute mark on the track I Need To Know, I so wish this could have been developed more slant

Nope. Hans just sits there in his film music palace and orders around his minions to do his bidding. He's the film music Nazi! And then he take all the credit! Mwahahahahahahahahahahaha!
