The mention of 'Goldenthal' sounds enticing, but the other things I've read do not.

I very much doubt you will like it, but you never know I guess.

It's not a score I think everyone will love, it is quite brutal, and it lacks an 'obvious' theme. But I can see this working brilliantly in the film, this really is music for a giant, nuclear-hungry, city-levelling mutated lizard.

This is film music clearly designed to purely aid the film, but what's this? It actually works well as an album! Who'd have thunk it!?

Impossible, I tell you. Film music just does not work unless you've seen the film.

I was lucky enough to get some tickets for Godzilla at the IMAX in London. I haven't heard the score yet so intend to hear it for the first time on their utterly ludicrous sound system.

I wish Godzilla was more thematic. I've played through it five times and aside from a few highlight tracks, it just goes in one ear and out the other. All very well-written and orchestrated but it thrashes around just like the oversized lizard does.

Pretty much the perfect description for a Godzilla film, don't you think? wink

Oh, I have no doubt it fits the film like a glove. Desplat scores almost always do. I just don't find it compelling as a standalone listen.

    yeah
    Quite agree.
Looking very much forward to experiencing 'the full package' when I go and see the film.

NP : GODZILLA - Alexandre Desplat

Starts off very Elfman-ish doesn't it.

I like the rhythm in the opening track. The strings do sound Efmanish. But the march pattern is more "Goldsmithian" to me. It's just a great score all round.

I'm falling somewhere between the likes of Steven & Southall on the one hand and Martijn & Josh on the other with this score.

Perhaps a little too much strurm and drang for me to really enjoy this, but I will say that I'm looking forward to listening to it again. There's a bit much here to take in on just one listen.

My favourite track so far? The very last one. And no, that's not me being sarcastic, I loved that final track enough to play it twice more.

  1. NP: eXistenZ - Howard Shore

One of my favourite Howard Shore scores. There's not a wasted track on the entire album. Love it!

NP : THE WICKER TREE - John Scott

A mixed bag but there's plenty here to like ( the "mysterioso" stuff is excellent ). I've heard the film is awful. Has anyone here seen it?

NP: WHERE THE WIND BLOWS (Roger Waters et.al.)

Cool album that I play ever so often, although the songs far outshine Waters' score.
    I am extremely serious.

NP: Godzilla Vs. Megaguirus - Michiru Ohshima

Now the work of this Japanese lady on Godzilla is TRULY sensational!
The film though is pretty dodgy if you don't enjoy big rubber monsters in a miniature landscape slapping the holy beejesus out of each other .

  2. Michiru Ohshima's music is usually very good. Sometimes she's listed under Michiru Oshima so it's worth checking both if you're looking some more of her music.

  3. The latter seems a more proper Latin spelling.

...which, amazingly, the Japanese care little for or about. wink

    The CD cover states Ohshima.
But yeah, I've also seen it spelled 'Oshima', so Alan is quite right.
Spelled either way though, it's a damn fine score, and one of the outstanding ones in the Godzilla musical canon.

Revenge of the Sith John Williams

I've come to the conclusion this is my favourite prequel score. For most people I imagine it'll be the first one, and understandably so. But it's the intensity and sheer drama that appeals to me about this one. I'd go even further and say that Battle of the Heroes may in fact be my favourite theme from the prequels.

...well, at least this week it is.

That might be you and I both because I think Battle of The Heroes is a stupendous piece of music.

I am one of those that think the first prequel score is best overall though.

    Yuh. I'm with you.
Best prequel film, best prequel score.
'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn
  5. "Battle of the Heroes" is to me the epitome of a melodically uninteresting theme that nevertheless largely succeeds at what it's trying to do (i.e. be apocalyptic) because of the very strong orchestral and choral flourishes that surround it.

    I agree with Edmund here.

The film is probably also my least favourite of the prequels. I don't get why people always equate 'darker' as necessarily 'better' all the time. Annoying.

It's easily, easily my favourite of the prequel films. It's the only one I think is any good, really, but actually I think it's more than just good.

I always said that -if I could- I'd happily relegate Phantom Menace and Attack Of The Clones to a five minute intro to when the saga startes properly, which is in Revenge Of The Sith. It's the only prequel that felt properly like Star Wars.
