Good morning, Timmer! (when you read this). I'm impressed that you manage to write that coherently when you're drunk. I've never been able to do that. But yeah -- THE BIG COUNTRY is a superb score, and I'm sure that's one of the least controversial things to say ever.
    I am extremely serious.

NP: PAIN & GAIN (Steve Jablonsky)

As I think I've made perfectly clear by now, this is one of my favourite scores from 2013 -- as opposed to everyone else and their grandmother!
    I am extremely serious.
  1. It's not the worst score I've ever heard. Nor the worst Jablonsky score. Nor even the worst Jablonsky score of 2013.

    but it's not good...

Revenge of the Sith John Williams

One of my most played albums. (With the inclusion of the film version of the opening battle music from the bootleg/whatever thingy.)

I probably don't play it enough. Next time I fancy some Star Wars I shall try and resist the temptation of playing the usual suspects of episodes IV, V & VI. When playing the prequels it's The Phantom Menace I go for.

  2. I might have to play that one again soon. It has some spectacular material that I revisit frequently but I also recall it being pretty scattershot and unfocused. At the moment I'd say it's my least favorite of the six Star Wars scores, although that's (of course) relative.

You mean Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. tongue

I never have a problem with choosing the classic scores over the prequels given how different the prequel scores are. I'm either in a 'prequel' mood, or a 'classic' mood. They're different enough to warrant their own moods!

But whatever. I love them ALL! punk

Scattershot and unfocused is certainly not how I'd describe 'Sith', though its dark tone may be off-putting for some.

My least favourite, and what I think is the weakest (and not surprising given the film it was written for) is Attack of the Clones - and I LOVE that score. Though it does have one of the best themes of the prequel trilogy, and one of the best action cues.

It could have been worse, I could have gone SW, TESB & ROTJ but thankfully I hate acronyms wink

Well...I guess I was thinking mostly of the action music, which I feel is a little directionless in both Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith (with the exception of the arena cue from the former and the opening battle from the latter). But also I just feel like other than the overarching "darkness", it lacks a consistent tone. Or maybe a strong memorable new theme to anchor it (which "Battle of the Heroes", though entertaining, simply fails at).

I also think that the 13-minute end credits cue is largely a waste of time, CD space which could have been put to much better use. Admittedly that's an issue that plagues all three prequel score releases, but it's particularly prevalent here.

I think you're right Edmund, the prequel scores do lack coherency but then the films themselves are a mess. I like all three scores though and each one has some standout moments.

I've listened to close to 30 of Williams' scores and yet this and War of the Worlds are the two I return to more than any others.
  6. I always said some of the best music written for STAR WARS is on this album. Outstanding! The way the music was synched in the prequel films is far from perfect (last minute edits). And with regard to "Sith" one would wish for a better album sequencing. But basically I value Williams' music for the prequels no less than that he wrote for the original films.
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.

This kind of orchestral onslaught is the most savage I've heard in a blockbuster since Goldenthal in his prime.

The mention of 'Goldenthal' sounds enticing, but the other things I've read do not.

I will see the film at a press screening tomorrow morning. That will work as a sort of 'first sampler' of the score too, unless it's buried in the sound mix.
    I am extremely serious.

It's very gratifying that you're saying this. And people like to say that Desplat's music has no balls...
