I always said that -if I could- I'd happily relegate Phantom Menace and Attack Of The Clones to a five minute intro to when the saga startes properly, which is in Revenge Of The Sith. It's the only prequel that felt properly like Star Wars.

Lovely. Just lovely! For anyone who enjoys "Indian" sound (I have no idea how authentic it is,it sure as hell sounds great) this is highly recommended!

  2. NP: Bi Küçük Eylül Meselesi - Toygar Işıklı

Apparently the film is a Turkish romantic drama. But the score is a lovely little gem from 2014: orchestral in style with some nice little instrumental solos peppered throughout.

It's available as a digital download and you could do worse than give the clips a go?

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag : Freedom Cry - Olivier Deriviere

Often when I read a heap of praise over a score I tend to prepare myself for a let down at some level.
So today I finally got to listen this one. There was absolutely NO let down at any point at all!
This is a knockout album from start to finish!
Deriviere has (once again) proven himself to be one of the truly great "new" composers around.
    Awesome! Bravo sir, bravo!

Many of the individual cues are nice, agreed. But the album as an overall listening experience pretty much sucks (it's all over the place!).

  3. NP: Mission: Impossible (1996) - Danny Elfman

This score is not much talked about. It might not be a masterpiece, yet I think it's a fine thriller score.

How differently we experience things! smile
I was just coming on the board to express my admiration of this album being able to hold so well to a structural integrity. I was exceedingly hesitant to try this: a cobbling together of many dozens of under-a-minute cues has never fared well as a listening experience, in my opinion.
But I was quite impressed how almost suite-like the album feels.
Most queues segue almost seamlessly into the next, providing a far more coherent experience than I could have imagined!

The only small concern I have is that the sound seems WAY too big to accommodate a natural histories series about the perspective of minute creatures like chipmunks and mice. I mean tracks like "Forest Of The Owl" sound more like "Ultimate Battle Flight Of The Galactic Overlord's Legions"... wink

The stylistic disparity is what throws me off here, not the short cues. There is no 'concept feel', no sense of building drama and coherence -- one of the MAIN reasons for why I listen to soundtracks in the first place. The album is also a bit on the long side.

That being said, the strength of the individual cues -- and that fact that SOME of them share some kind of style -- makes me believe that a good program could be produced here; somewhere.

This is the biggest gripe I have about Foster's music. I've not seen much of the programme to really comment on how well the music fits with the image. But there are a lot of good tracks on the album (especially when I try and dissociate what the music was actually written for!)

It is unquestionably the best M:I movie, but I personally think Zimmer's score is the best. Never cared for Giacchino (have I said that today already?), and Elfman's score is the first in a long string of scores that ushered in his obsession with dense orchestrations and counterpoint -- NOT my favourite sound of his!

One of the most detestable Zimmer scores I can think of. At the time of release a friend and his then-girlfriend went to see this, knowing how much I was into film scores the girlfriend told me how much I would enjoy the score to MI:2 uhm That's like telling someone who enjoys good pop music how much they'll enjoy the latest One Direction single they haven't heard.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind John Williams

For me, this is one of those miracle scores. It's as though it was written purely with me in mind, written to my exact specifications on what I think makes a good listening experience. That's how much I love this score.

Star Wars has the themes, but overall this is my pick of what is arguably Williams' greatest year.
