NP : ATTILA THE HUN - Daniel Pemberton

There are some really nice moments in this but some tracks just go into typical generic film music territory. Not as enjoyable as Space Dive.

    NP: THE MASTER (Jonny Greenwood)

Mezmerizing. I love how, in "Overtones", there's that single consonant chord popping up with regular intervals trying desperately to drag the dissonance back to the ground -- perhaps a bit like Phoenix' relationship to the Hoffmann character.

One of the best scores in years.

    Godzilla - Alexandre Desplat

Well-written, as you'd expect from this composer but not much of this stuck with me on a first-listen, aside from some pretty entertaining dissonant orchestral crashes. Didn't pick out any major themes or anything but I'm sure they're there somewhere.

Couldn't remember a note of this - but that main theme is superb!

Not a bit of it, dear boy. You know the age old adage that holds true for all music: the only thing better than ten pieces of brass is twenty pieces of brass.

That would certainly be an interesting experiment. I wonder what Cutthroat Island would sound like as an all-oboe ensemble.

  12. NP: Blade Runner - Vangelis

This is the BSX "celebration" re-recording of Vangelis' score. I like how close to the original Edgar Rothermich seems to have gotten.

Curiously, when it comes to orchestral scores, I'm very open-minded as to re-interpretations and re-recordings. In fact, I usually prefer rerecordings over originals for older scores.

With electronic music, however, it's different. It has such unique sound that anything that tries to approximate it, but not quite getting there, doesn't work for me. The exception is if the re-interpretation is done more radically (re-mixes etc.). So either go all out there, or don't do it at all -- that's my view.

  13. I very much prefer re-recordings to be very faithful to the originals, whether it's orchestral or electronic. I want re-recordings to recreate the original music as closely as possible. So, I suppose I question the need for re-recordings when I see one.

Vast improvements in sound quality of the re-recorded music over the original score is a great justification for a re-recording. But I do still find merit in the original recordings. Re-recorded tracks for a "Best of" compilation I tend to avoid completely as I have found them to be - in the majority of cases - lacking in the recreation of the original pieces.

Projects where the re-recorded music is trying something different with the original music - e.g., a string quartet or guitar trio version - are definitely worth listening to. But I still ask the question of whether it adds anything to the original version.
