Turned out this was -- in fact -- one of the best scores of the year!
Fucking hell man, i want to meet you one day and have a lot of beers with you, i think you will be great in person and i will like you tremendously but man you got some weird stuff going on in your head
Just remember: when he whips out the fava beans and a nice chianti, it's time to run.

Ha, ha...indeed. Then again, everyone who is interested in film music has a lot of "weird stuff going on in the head". :D
True. true., a bit fudged up in the head we all are, in varying degrees and waysLove Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Yeah, whenever I hear Skyfall, I think, let's listen to a better Bond score, and then go to Quantum of Solace instead. -

When I hear that score I think, let's listen to a better Thomas Newman score and there are many.
If I want a great Bond score it's neither by Newman or his superior in Bond scores David Arnold. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

When I want to listen to a Bond score the first score I think of is Arnold's Casino Royale.... or Tomorrow Never Dies.

When I think: What Bond score do I NOT want to listen to?, two names pop into my head, the first being David Arnold. The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else. -

THE WIND RISES - Joe Hisaishi.
I guess I just don't like Hisaishi's music. And this doesn't even sound like most of his other Miyazaki scores. This one has that whole Italian sound, but I still don't enjoy it much. It's happened several times now: I hear all this hype, so I seek out a score of his only to be disappointed by it. Everyone gushes about his music generally, and many have been really impressed by this score in particular, but I'm most of the way through it now and I have to say that I do not see what all the fuss is about. It has some nice tracks, sure, but most of it is short tracks without a lot going on. It adds to my frustration that most of his music isn't available cheaply. You can't download it from itunes or listen to it on Spotify. You have to import it from some specialty website or get lucky enough to find the one copy someone is selling on Amazon (which is also rarely inexpensive). Maybe I just need to accept that I don't get much out of his music and not bother in the future... -

The Abyss - Alan Silvestri
Haven't heard this in years when I was watching the film quite regularly. There are wonderful, rightfully well known, transcendent moments like 'Bud on the Ledge' and the Finale but plenty of uninteresting bits in between. Can't say the expanded edition appeals much. -

Au contraire monsieur! I have really come to appreceate those ambient aspects of the score. The make the rousing finale even more compelling. Transcendent is the right word btw. The music has a distinct religious feel about it. Silvestri took some imspiration from Palestrina here I guess.

You're right. It has a very LA VITA E BELLA feel to it, which isn't necessarily my cup of tea. There are some great tracks inbetween, but not enough to make this a Hisaishi favourite for me. That being said, I saw the film during this year's TIFF and thought it was wonderful! An appropriate swan song for Miyazaki.I am extremely serious. -

I basically like both, film and score. Nevertheless I think the score got the Oscar in the wake of it's film. (As it is so often.) Saving Private Ryan and Thin Red Line are clearly superior scores. Hirschfelder's Elizabeth I would see on par with Piovani. Randy Newman's Pleasantville I can't say anything about.

Did Gerrard actually do any composing? She's credited on a few cues, but I'm thinking that's probably just because of her voice...
