    I have no nostalgia for ATLANTIS (I was 24 in 2001, and I don't think I even saw it when it came out), but it's -- for the most part -- a good score. Some of the mickey-mousey action tracks are a bit too noisy for my taste, but then you have something like "The Crystal Chamber", which is one of my favourite JNH tracks of all time.

    Atlantis is among the first movies I have a distinct memory of seeing in cinemas; I think I was 8 or 9 at the time. And that "Crystal Chamber" cue just stuck with me. I never forgot it. And then when I started getting into film scores I looked it up and it became my first James Newton Howard score and was among the first 20 scores I heard. So, yeah, definitely a bit of nostalgia in there for me. But I still think it's genuinely a fantastic score - noisy action tracks and all. smile

    NP: Tiny Ninja 26 - Dominique Charpentier

    Sometimes how complex a piece of music doesn't really matter and it's how catchy a tune is that makes it such a great track. Charpentier's "Haiku I" from Tiny Ninja 26 (in fact, it is THE track from the score) is just a great little track...so much so that I have it on repeat at the moment.

    A soundtrack composed in 24h for the video game Tiny Ninja 26, the game was developed during the 2013 Ludum Dare Game Jam, an "accelerated video game development competition" apparently.

    NP: QUAI D'ORSAY (Philippe Sarde)

    The film was shown at this year's TIFF, but sadly I missed it. The score is very good -- typical classical sophistication with many of the repeating figures that Sarde loves so much. Sarde can be a bit hit/miss for me, but I like this. Certainly stands out as more retro than many other scores in 2013.
    I am extremely serious.

    Alan, I'll check out your link after work. I'm amazed at how you can find stuff like this.

    NP: LEGENDS OF CHIMA - Anthony Lledo

    This is just really good. Great adventure film scoring. Parts of it sound like they were written by John Williams. One track seems like it wouldn't be out of place in a James Bond film. This is just well composed stuff. The worst part about the album is that it's too short!

    Well, I'm back (sort of)

    For more than a year I've been mostly listening to musical albums (RENT, Little Shop of Horrors, Next To Normal and so on), but this week I got back my film score mood a bit...

    So now I'm listening to this while working on a research data:

    I can empathise with that, and I'm aware this won't feature very high on many people's lists... but for me, there's something so fun about it.
  13. It seems to me like the score from The Horse Whisperer experiances some kind of revival lately. I have to give it a spin, I guess.

    Today in the mail:

    Cinema Serenade - various composers; The Pittsburgh Symphony conducted by John Williams, Violin: Itzhak Perlman
    Until very recently I wasn't aware of this album's existence. There is also a follow up album featuring golden age film music. Exited!

    Lifeforce (1985) - Henry Mancini / Michael Kamen on BSX

    This album has been on my whish list for a long time. Everytime I checked it proofed unavailable. Out of nowhere my vendor has it back in stock now. I have no idea where he got these copies from. So, another score taken from the whish list.

    Just humming Ave Satani in a Catholic Church should get more than a few raised eyebrows. If done properly. Y'know, with lyrics, and with a group.

    Isn't it just Alan slant I prefer the rerecordings of the tracks we're familiar with but I quite often go to the films score for those extras not previously available.

    Turned out this was -- in fact -- one of the best scores of the year!

    NP: Quantum of Solace - David Arnold

    I was in the mood for this score. I really the the more aggressive take on Bond that Arnold has developed starting with Casino Royale. The expanded version is interesting because, unlike most Arnold scores, it doesn't really add much in term of action cues. What it does offer is a diegetic cue that someone managed to name "opera intermezzo". I don't remember hearing it in the movie, but it's a gorgeous orchestra/electronic piece that I enjoyed a whole bunch. But dammit if I can find the actual name for it.

    TL:DR - QOS expanded release doesn't offer much more than the official release, but reveals an awesome source cue that I want more of.

    Hmmm? I'd like to hear that. Still, any composer that has to work around THIS PIECE in a scene has my sympathies.
