Primarily because it was the default and I don't know how to change it. But I quite like pink.

I know. That's weird, and quite irritating. I don't know if it's important enough to bother having it, given the design flaw with it.

You could try to have it all at the bottom of the page, so it'll be there but out of the way....

BTW, I really enjoy the site. It's modern and bright and clean looking. As appose to the dark, late 90s style, that I remember.

The pink has gone and various new reviews have been posted in the last few days:

    The Lightkeepers
    Knight and Day
    Iron Man 2
    The A-Team
    Twilight: Eclipse

Couldn't agree more about Knight and Day and The A-Team.

The A-Team album does indeed need quite a bit of pruning; about 40 minutes worth of it. It's much better in its half-hour form! (Much like Iron Man 2 benefits from a much shorter album.)

There's been a review a day so far in April - I've never been so prolific!

Most recently, the wonderful FSM album pairing Jerry Goldsmith's The Homecoming with James Horner's Rascals and Robbers:

  1. You've really been cranking them out lately, James. Thanks for all the great reviews!
  2. James, I have a great deal of admiration for the level of new reviews (and you also Thomas for all the updates here).

What is your "anatomy of a score review" in terms of number of listens, writing process, fitting writing into daily life, etc

I am interested in any reviewers' experiences.

To be honest, with a lot of the capsule reviews, I only listen to them three times before reviewing. Generally twice that much for the full-length ones.

I'm churning them out at the moment... again, so much easier with the capsules. My pile of CDs to be reviewed (a mixture of promos and ones I've bought) was getting so vast I had no choice. I don't spend nearly as much time as I should doing things I find boring (like proofreading, researching, reading others' reviews, that sort of thing). But since I'm the one paying for it all, I think I have that right! If one day I try to get others to pay for my hobby with Paypal links etc then I know I would have to put more effort in to make anyone want to contribute.

Good on yer James, I always enjoy reading your reviews even when I don't agree with some of what you say. I find that you are 100% irrefutably accurately correct telling your ultimate truths and wisdom indubitably when your views are the same as mine.

I think they look far more extensive than mere "capsule reviews". Those are 1, at most 2 paragraphs. Most of these are fullblown reviews.
    I am extremely serious.

Well, I think I can impart things more usefully a lot of the time (but not all the time) in two paragraphs than I could do in the five or six that most soundtrack reviews seem to take up. They're a lot shorter than other websites', that's why I call them capsules - but I know they could be even shorter!

    They certainly can.

When I created my website celluloidtunes.net way back when (before it became an abandoned, archaic museum), my plan was to have a soundtrack review section that only had one paragraph, about this length:

    From here....

    ....to here.

That's the kind of stuff I like to read - concise, to-the-point, effective and getting the gist across. That's an artform in itself.
    I am extremely serious.

So do I. But I suspect we are few in number. Maybe I'll try it and see what happens. It's not like the number of hits I get can go down very far.

Sweet! Keep at it! Make sure that everyone and all the message boards know about your Facebook page. Even whore yourself out to your non-film music friends on Facebook.

James that is kind of the same way I feel about my site too. It cost me money to review. I listen to something such as the Counterfeit Traitor at least 10 times. A lot of the listening goes on while I'm writing the review.

Keep up the excellent work James, I know how hard it is to have a pile of stuff waiting to be reviewed.

I listen to each score at least 2 times if I want to review them. If I don't get everything after 2, a third will have to do it. Sometimes I see the movie before it, which makes understanding and writing the review a lot easier. And sometimes I need to see the picture in order to finally understand why it is that good or bad.

Either way, it is impossible to believe that I've done so much if you consider you have to hear each score twice, while passing up so many others you've listened to without writing a review about them. Goes to show how much time we truly spend on reviewing and listening to new music
