Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  1. To be more serious, when it comes to pure functionality, the Joker texture DOES rank with the best stuff Zimmer's ever written in his career though, of course the whole thing is not another The Thin Red Line. I find it enjoyable enough and the only problem with it as a score I had was too much music and, by the end of the film, it being too intense somewhat.

    "Functional" - a perfect word.

But what does the music tell us about the characters, the situations they're in, their state of mind etc which we couldn't already determine just from the visuals? Of course some film music just has to reinforce what we can already see (ie "functional") but much great film music goes beyond that, as Zimmer did in Thin Red Line.
  2. The score does very well with presenting Joker as the staple of anarchy and chaos he is. I don't agree with LP that the anthem is a symbol of the moral struggle of Bruce Wayne, it's a bit too simple for that. I think that the score concentrates on building the already well-present difference between chaos and order, so rather than representing the characters themselves, they concentrated (and sometimes did better, sometimes worse, depending on particular scenes), they decided to represent the archetypes at heart of the story. Let's not forget that in the end it's NOT about Batman and a certain realistic (and very pessimistic) message is actually quite well presented in the score.

If the expanded cd contains the music as heard in the film, it is totally unnecessary. I mean, why do we need a 2 CD set of the music (as edited in the film) when we have the original release featuring all the music in suites? And I don´t remember more music in the film than the one featured in the original score cd. Actually, as we all know ("Like a Dog Chasing Cars" anyone?), there is more music in the cd than in the film.

The freaky joker sound textures actually tell us a lot about the character, imo.

My sentiments exactly. Harvey Two-Face also speaks a lot of values the character wants to defend. That's why the Copland influences.

Seeing as how Nolan forbad any kind of theme or musical development to distract from the action, I think you're reading WAY too much into a very mediocre, pretty much uniquely texture-driven sound effort.

  4. That was obvious for me after I saw the movie. The role of music was to be impersonal, rather trying to build certain impressions, mostly texturally of course.

    Seriously, this again? moon

I think that the Joker's theme (referring to the full CD version) transcended functionality. Take into consideration the root of the styles being used, the Industrial/Hard Rock/Metal genre, often associated with a rebellious, dark, anarchist attitude. As an audio shorthand, that alone should tell you about the Joker's state of mind and the kind of character he is. And the use of the violin (warped and resampled, of course) as a auditory alert, signifying the presence, the cause and the effect, of the "agent of anarchy" that is the Joker, is inspired.

I know! After I set you all straight, I can't believe this hive of mediocrity has been raised yet again as if it's some kind of achievement. wink

  7. Actually, he could, if he was in Andes. Chewing cocaine leaves while walking in the mountains to deal with the pressure changes is something the natives have been doing for ages.

And something that I have done. Some people here will remember that I left the board for three weeks to go travelling in Bolivia.

Chewing it is very very bitter and don't swallow it or you'll be running, not marching.......to the loo wink I preferred drinking it as coca tea. Everyone I saw was chewing it from policemen to shop workers to bus drivers etc etc, it's not illegal though, unfortunately, I wasn't allowed to bring any home with me.

The effect was no more stimulating than a cup of coffee.

I like the Joker material as well. The one long sustained note or sound... whatever you wanna call it... really works. I can't really praise the hard rock angle anymore since it was pointed out by one of our friends here at MT that Zimmer basically transplanted material from Black Hawk Down into the opening scene... it works, sure, but so do temp tracks. No creativity points there Mr. Zimmer.
