    NP: Aliens Deluxe Edition

    Well...It has a lot of underscore, but for me is the Alien score I most enjoy.

    It has the sound from Goldsmith score, with militaristic and more contemporany action stuff.I really miss this kind of dissonant and agressive writting from Horner.

    The movie is one of my all time favourites, and It is my favourite Alien movie too.

    Dood... that's the highlight of the film and score. I absolutely LOVE that sequence... and no, not just for the incredibly AWESOME lesbian scene in the bathroom.

    NP: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - James Horner

    Been a while since I've revisited this album. I've heard suites and re-recordings on and off for the past little while but it has been a long time since I've sat down and listening to this score from start to finish. If there was ever a perfect film music album release then this would be it. While yes, there are some cues not available on this CD, this album plays extremely well. Not a bad note or bad cue here! It's almost like a symphony. A story is being told through the music. You don't need the film to appreciate this score. It's a brilliant work by Horner... borrowings and all... and if Giacchino can match the excitement and thematic wonder of Star Trek II then I think we are in for a real treat!

    A 5 star masterpiece!!!

    And for my 200th post I'd like to inform you all that I am now listening to one of the greatest film music achievements in recent memory! Absolutely superb!!! And that Manta Squadron theme. Ooooooh baby!!!

    Gorgeous! An absolutely gorgeous score with lush, memorable and developed themes. It looses a bit of steam in the middle sections but comes to live once again with heartbreaking "In The Name Of Love."

    One of the best of the year and Top 3 of 2007 material for sure! One of the rare bright spots in 2007. An elegant score.

    Highly recommended.

  8. Brian Tyler - Timeline (promo)

    Another of my Brian Tyler quest days. This time I got to listen to Paparazzi, Annopolis and now Timeline. Paparazzi was more often than not an MV wannabe, sadly, which influenced Tokyo Drift - that one went more into Trevor Rabin territory. Annopolis was a funny ride with Zimmer, Horner and Rabin referred to a lot, pretty much in the thematic material. The action (sports) material was a more hip and less suspenseful version of the MV ride called Paparazzi and sometimes going to Horner's rhythms.

    Timeline... Tyler seems to *really* love James Horner, really. Lady Claire and Marek is a very big Mask of Zorro reference, some of the rhythms are also somewhat Hornerish. Enter the Wormhole was pretty funny with the sound, sounding a lot like John Powell's Bourne theme. What I find interesting is that Tyler bases a lot of his main themes on 4 chords.

    Listened also to The Hunted on the other day. Rather cool action music, though sadly disappointing underscore. I have yet to repeat Children of Dune and probably get the Constantine promo. I'm weary about picking Greatest Game Ever Played because of that "temp-track-steamy-affair rather than temp-track-love" character. I'm afraid the whole rips will make me rather laugh. As for now I stand for all the opinions I wrote above.

  10. Heard bits of Bubba Ho-Tep. Sounded like the Paparazzi theme for a rock ensemble. And I wonder if *anybody* can write an intelligent score for such an idiotic score (Elvis Presley fighting a mummy? Or what was it?). I would doubt *even* about Goldsmith biggrin

    I don't remember the score but Bubba Ho-Tep was great fun....man, it's got Bruce Campbell cool

    NP: Painted Veil (Desplat)

    Dude...I don't know if i prefer Painted Veil, Lust Caution or Birth. Every one of theme has the same style but something diferent.

    This gorgeous energic piano stuff with a non-obvious asian woodwinds are pretty damn cooL!

    Score heaven. It's always an ambiguous experience listening to a truly great Broughton score like this: On the one hand it's a blessing for a score like this to have been produced in the first place, on the other hand it's a crying shame Broughton hasn't had the success he more than deserves.

    Broughton ROCKS. Fact.

    NP: Mass Effect - Jack Wall and Sam Hulick

    This is the original score to the Xbox 360 RPG. It plays very much like a sci-fi score from the 80s mixing wild pulsating electronics with the orchestra (well in this case orchestral samples...). When I first started playing the game, it instantly reminded me of Poledouris' Cherry 2000. It works amazingly well in the game, but suffers from monotony on the 75 minute CD. There's enough good material here to make a nice 30-40 minutes playlist though.

    A mix Between Arnold's Godzilla ( well...this is posterior) and Marco Beltrami.

    They Swim are 8 minutes of powerfull action music.

    The guy's just so god damn frickin awesome at thematic development! He should do lectures for all the young composers out there, they could learn a thing or two from this amazing composer.
