I think you mean INFERIOR (as opposed to SUPERIOR) rather than POSTERIOR (as opposed to SUPERIOR).

They Swim are 8 minutes of powerfull action music.

    My Alien Top:

    -Aliens
    -Alien
    -Alien Resurrection
    -Alien Verus Predator Requiem
    -Alien Verus Predator.

    Alien 3....Is not alien!

Why not? It's inventively orchestrated (much like ALIEN, it sounds like some performers were gutted live on the scoring stage) and it's got a deeply elegiac tone (like Goldsmith's more dramatic ALIEN music, but more emotional here). It's the musical end the saga should have had. I've not heard Frizzell's score outside the film, and I've not seen Kloser's with the film, but neither are as impressive as those initial three scores.

    NP: Sex and Lucia (Iglesias)

Some lovely music... and lovely is a good description for the film's many female stars as well.

Great score! Not at all the typical Zimmer sound.

Well....You can question about the "Bolerish" if you want...But Not about this.

Alien 3 can be a good score, but it doesn't have the "alien" sound stablished by Goldsmith. Not this Hypersleep woodwinds, not the little chimes, not this percusion with echo (or whatever it is) that you can hear in Aliens, Alien Resurrection, Or the two AVP.

    NP:Predator

Definetly cool to listen, and one of the best Silvestri's more balanced and interesting efforts.

But No Erik, I will not change my mind about Overrated and I will not put in my tp 20.
  2. Still:

    Jerry Goldsmith - Alien

Just finished the first CD. AMAZING horror stuff. Tyler will never come close to this, sometimes subtle, sometimes not so subtle, amazingly orchestrated, jarringly dissonant score. The atmosphere is built very carefully and that makes it partly so great. What more can be said about such a classic?

Y'know... I've got about 15 new releases sitting here and I just can't listen to them very much, even Golden Compass, because all I can keep playing is Alien. Nobody's come close in a film score to something this good for years.

Anyway, I did finally have time to listen to The Water Horse, and what a load of crap it is.
  3. Oh? I liked Water Horse!

I was finishing my listen of the first CD. Now onto second. And I still love the score. I wonder, this amazement that seems to go on the Tyler score. How does it compare to the Goldsmith original? I just think that praising this guy (Tyler) is somehow unfair in that manner.

Good back to the top of these page and read Michael's comments about Alien3. Alien3 is a superb score by Goldenthal and one of his all time best.

  4. I think there even are some echoing effects in Goldenthal... some unusual sounds with long sustain in the opening cue 'Agnus Dei' - like ghostly shudders. I think Goldenthal prides himself on not copying the earlier scores, but certainly is inventive and keeps to the disturbing tone of the music of the series. I think Frizzell's score probably sticks out as more of a sore thumb, just because it beats a pretty standard drum to get the chills. For more on this...

It's a nice wallpaper score that serves it's cute function in the film, but nothing more, really. It isn't moving me in unexpected ways, nor does it have any unique touch or color. Just nice and charming.

NP: (As discussed in the Michael Giacchino thread) Medal Of Honour - Michael Giacchino

Oh yes, this is a fine, fine score.
I still can't believe anything as powerful, creative and especially high-quality like this was brought out not to support a major feature film. There's all sorts of little motifs and themes floating about, and the energy levels are just through the roof!

But I don't think his Medal Of Honour theme is the new Raiders march (although I maybe get what you're saying, Bregt: the whole score definitely has an Indiana Jones vibe going on).

Perhaps, and I'm just thinking out loud here, it's not so much a matter (again refering to my post in the Michael Giacchino thread) of themes not being present, but not having been developed into some sort of concert suite arrangement, as was wont in the seventies and eighties.
Man, I'd buy a Giacchino concert suites album in a heartbeat!

In the meantime I'm enjoying the shit out of this album.
Man, Taking Out The Railgun is one of the finest cues I've ever heard in any war film...let alone a "mere" war game!

But the opening track is a concert suite. it's the main theme for the game and was composed in a concert style because it just plays over top of the main menu screen.

Giacchino has written MANY concert versions of his themes that start off a lot of his albums especially the video game albums.

Sorry, yeah, I wasn't very clear there: I was referencing his material in general. Not the Medal Of Honour theme specifically which indeed is very much a concert hall arrangement.

As far as that goes, incidentally, I'm far more reminded of Band Of Brothers than Raiders.
That's not a bad thing, mind.
It's just not what I'm looking for in general.

NP: The Boy Who Could Fly - Bruce Borughton

Not sure what made me whistle this films theme on the way in from dropping off my son this morning but I knew I had to get to the basement as fast as I could and put this one one. An absolutely stunning, mono-thematic score from Broughton who composed a pile of gems in the middle 80's. This score contains one of my all time favorite Broughton themes. My absolute favorite rendition of the theme comes half way through "Milly and Eric Flee/Into the Air" Broughton gives the theme a broad, sweeping, heroic workout for about 3 - 4 minutes which is just heavenly!

NP: The Bourne Identity - Laurence Rosenthal

Was reading my Moviehound's Soundtrack guide while taking a break this morning and came upon a review of this title. I thought, I've heard the three Powell scores let's see how Rosenthal tackles the same subject matter. Well, this is far more of a traditional approach to scoring and it's the polar opposite of what Powell came up with. No drum kit, no electronics, no MV/RC sound... just pure orchestral gold! This is an excellent and at times exotic work... and the love theme tops any of the romantic music Powell composed in his scores. Rosenthal's work is also far more psychological than Powell's efforts. Powell's score are geared towards a more rythmic, propulsive, over the top style where as Rosenthal goes deeper into the characters and situations. The string work in the "Red Door" is a fine example of this and the piano writing in the action material should also be noted. Overall, I still prefer Powell's efforts for it's pure entertainment value but Rosenthal's is far more mature and it's nice to hear an older 70's styled thriller score (even though the film was released in 88) for the same subject matter.

I highly recommend this score... especially for those that have only heard the Powell efforts!

    -Erik-

PS - I lied about the electronics... there are some... but used as a suspense devise. A bit cheesy.

Actually, I'm having a lot of fun with this one. I'm a sucker for Celtic music. Just finished "The Fishermen" Just makes me wanna get up and dance a jig. I also love the fantasy element of the score and the big action cue (Saving Crusoe/The Net) is splendid! And Geoff Foster's recording bloody brilliant!

Totally agree, Erik. I've always loved Celtic music. As far as I'm concerned, of the 20 or so albums I've heard from 2007, this easily way up there. It's not achingly original, but it's great listen.
