  1. Look at it this way: Only you know which tracks would be your favourites. So you get to choose them yourself instead of the producer. The only thing a producer gets for editing a too short score album is a bunch of people who are angry about some of their personal favourites missing from an album.

    Well, that's the thing. I find in general with very, very few exceptions (three or four! shocked ) that concert suites albums are a far more enjoyable and worthwhile listen for me than "full" scores.

    Even such classics as Raiders Of The Lost Ark (yeah, yeah, yeah. I know. Sorry, Erik. wink ) or Ben Hur get FAR more listens from me in their original form than the extended one. So yeah, I do trust producers / experts to make the aesthetically most pleasing and appropriate choices. It's always served me the best in the past.

    I understand you. Sometimes when you are not a big fan of the composer, you are too lazy to focus on the tracks you like and make your own compilation. But I understand When people wants the most music posible.

    NP The Kite Runner (Alberto Iglesias)

    This is not the score that is gonna change my mind about Iglesias. Very different from what he usually does, yes, but I have to admit that this kinda eastern music scores are not my cup of tea.
    I keep saying it didn´t deserved a nomination in the Golden Globes. Far better stuff this 2007.

    Yes I´d pick Frontline or the first one but I was referring to 2007 only. And it may be a bit overbearing, but I can assure you that´s what you need when you´re playing the game. It´s amazing playing it with Giacchino´s score in the background, you know, shooting everything / everybody with Giacchino´s fanfares.

    Well of course! It's certainly one of the most impressive works by Giacchino and easily one of 2007's bests.

    James, if i may suggest a specific playlist that will help you appreciate the score more:

    01. Airborne : main titles
    07. Operation Neptune
    16. Wreckage of Nijmega
    19. Paestum Landing
    and 20. MOH:AIRBORNE Credits which is easily one of the most impressive, coherent and accomplished single compositions by Giacchino.

    These are from the official release although i find that i usually prefer the first "bootleg" version that got out (the game rip), that's what i am playing 3/4 of the times.

    Agree, In part. I never liked the MOH theme, what I loved was the secondary motifs, but in Airborne they are not very good. And I find this score too over the top. It's not a good listening experience..IMHO.

    Anyway...I prefer Airborne in some way because is more Giacchino and less williams.

    NP:Waterhouse

    I don't like very much Celtic music, And I find the action stuff pretty generic. Some synth work is very good, and some tracks are gentle and Charming.

    But It seems in the last year JNH has come back to his most generic stuff from before Dinosaur (score that INHO was an inflection point in his career , and score that make me be fan of this man)

    I like it more and more each time too, but is hard to make it ´til the end (77 minutes of non-stop-over-the-top-action-music is a lot!). But man, if you are in action mood, this is the score of the year (yes Pawel, the score of the year! wink).

    After being familiar with the sound quality on the OST and to hear how clear the familiar music is on this new CD...it's a revelation.

    I remember us talking about scores for 2007 in London and the Mysterious Island / b]Fahrenheit 451[/b] re-recordings being mentioned as being releases to look forward to. And they were worth the wait - two excellent re-recordings. But little did we know there would be a trilogy of wonderful Herrmann re-recordings!!

    One of the things that surprises me about the North By Northwest recording is how it was such a surprise when it was announced. Had no-one any idea that it was on the way?

    Certainly not me! The liner notes hint that there's more to come... I do hope so. The Mysterious Island/Farenheit 451 albums are on their way to me from Intrada at the moment... really looking forward to them.

    As for NBNW, in terms of sheer entertainment value it's probably my favourite Herrmann score, but I could never listen to the old Rhino album because of the sound quality, with (and how often this seems to be the case!) the most damaged cues also being the best ones. No such problem with this wonderful new release!

    Anyway, a bit of a step down to NP: Neighbours - Bill Conti. Why oh why did I spend my hard-earned money on this? Will I never learn?

    Old fart. Your review was right in some respects, but I still enjoy the score because I love the movie so much. And it's certainly weak in terms of delivering a big, heroic main theme -- after seeing the new trailer for The Dark Knight (I didn't go see I am Legend to see it though) I hope the score will be a big improvement. And let it be more orchestral this time out...

    But it won't be, will it? I assume it's directed by Christopher Nolan, and it's pretty obvious now that he only likes the blandest, most cursory excuses for music to be in his films. And I like everything else about him!

    Batman Begins worked PERFECTLY in the movie, especially during the mammoth train fight sequence with "Molossus" ontop that elevated it hugely and all the appearances of the simple but bold and effective main theme; i also remember the scene when batman was standing on a top of a tower in the city, at night, over-watching it and we get slowly closer and closer to him from far away, the music that was over that (and i think left out of the album eventually) was very captivating. THE DARK KNIGHT will be equally good, imo, especially if they leave only Zimmer to do ...Zimmer-isms in it.

    Again We can have a discussion about Music that works very well in the movie, but other music in other way can fit very well too.

    Barbastella is what really fits amazingly well with the scene, and like a music in his own.

    NP:Pirates Suites.

    Some of the best Zimmer stuff is here.

    While "lord Becket" or "just good business" seems a little bit out of place for a pirates adventure, ironically they are the tracks with the best musical continuity with the 2 previous scores.

    "Lord Pirate of Singapore" is prodigious. If anyone can say some other action track that blends better Asian isntruments with orchestra, please let me know...I will give you 30 euros.

    I've said it before and I'll say it again... the score for BATMAN BEGINS was HORRIBLE!!! Absolutely horrible!!!

    Typical Zimmer BS!!! Now, if James Newton Howard was left alone to compose a Batman score on his own... well, now we'd have something to talk about.
