It's a overrated score , for a stupid movie.
NP:Alien (Goldsmith)
I saw the DVD and the making of the music. Pretty interesting, and with a lot of talk about the Editor-Producers-Director Against Goldsmith. I never thought Goldsmith could join the crew in the DVD. (when this interviews are done? 2002? )
I have to say im agree with Producers about the main titles, Goldsmith version is out of place, not only because i don't like the main theme but because it's too romantic.
ABout the score, I find some action stuff really hard to enjoy, Even if it's a very creative music. -

I agree with the call Ridley Scott and his editor made re: Goldsmith's main title. Not quite so convinced they made the right decision with respect to the end title though.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

How do you EVER get through "Towards the Unknown?"
-Erik-
With the greatest of ease! Exquisite film scoring.
Annoying and completely inappropriate scoring. One of the most distracting cues in the history of film music. Laughable really. I remember my friend and I looking at each other in the theatre and wondering just what the hell Morricone and De Palma were thinking. And then the laugh out loud finale. Beautiful music on it's own but again completely the wrong tone. It made in incredibly cheesy moment unintentionally funny!
-Erik-
My girlfriend finds "Towards the unknown" a sexy cue. I personally think it's the least listenable on the album, but I still kinda like it. The finale I think is the best sequence in recent film score history. The movie was kinda cheesy, but the music somehow makes me connect emotionally to it.
The first 5½ minutes of this utube clip illustrates the awesomeness of this score quite well-> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92UrCSI0vlk

Next I will play: ST.Insurrection
THe main theme makes me cry, and the action stuff is recorded as heaven, very clearly.
The best ST score since the original, the only problem is some action stuff is too on autopilot -

Simply amazing.
"Marry Me" - "The Heart of Davy Jones" - "Lord Cutler Beckett" - "Just Good Business" - "The Pirate Lord of Singapore" and "Hoist the Colors Suite" would make a perfect live concert.Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you -

I just got back from watching the film and the score's even better there than on the album, which is saying something. Desplat completely nailed it - and the film's a million miles better than I expected/feared (though isn't perfect). -

My thoughts exactly. And the score does get better with each listen. I can hear so many different themes now... I started reading the novel, and I think the movie (and score) got the atmosphere quite right. The score is a perfect listen during reading the book. Desplat absolutely hit every button spot on, be it the college, Kidman, the Bears, the gyptians, the journeys, the action. That final battle Theme is truly spectacular.
Just in case you didn´t notice, count me with the "for".

Imagine how many themes we would discover if we listen more closely to Michael Clayton, 21 Grams, The Clearing, The Forgotten, or all scores by Haslinger.

No it's not. And actually HATE this album. The performances are fine but the conducting is awful. A lot of the tracks are way too slow. However, The Imperial March is stunning. Jordi, I highly recommend you find the superior Varujan Kojian/Utah Symphony The Star Wars Trilogy album. Better sound, better performances and better conducting. The best Star Wars trilogy album!

Is this album the Skywalker Symphony recording? I seem to recall - strangely enough for a record trying to showcase a recording venue - that the sound is kind of flat. And that extended 'Throne Room' concert suite is not Williams at his best... the shorter STAR WARS edit is more to the point, even if it lacks the beauty of the Force theme on its own. (Williams should probably have done a concert arrangement of that theme on its own anyway.)A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

No.
The film itself moves along at a ferocious pace, never gets stuck in any sequence that drags (which I suspect might make it hard to follow for someone who hasn't read the book) and some of the effects are breathtaking. The way the daemons are done, in particular - I always wondered how that would be accomplished. I wasn't bothered by the stuff that was left out - except perhaps the ending - but I can see why they chose to end where they did. Such a pity that the other two novels might not make it to cinemas after all. -

Nope. My whole family could follow it without difficulties. I hear this kind of comment a lot around this movie, readers of the book worrying non-readers getting the story, but it doesn´t seem to be that problem at all. I think the script did a wonderful job to focus on certain aspects and to make those absolutely clear. There may be things missing, but it didn´t feel that way, and I didn´t find it too fast-paced. The Golden Compass managed all this a lot better than the Potter movies, which are so totally rushed and never care to explain things in a proper way for non-readers. Not that I would need it, since I´ve read all the books beforehand, but a lot of people I know, who never read any of them, were totally lost by what happened in part 5, and I can totally understand it. -

Rough, but very enjoyable! Reminds me a lot of Franke's work on Babylon 5 (which I love incidentally), which only enhances the fun. Undiluted, unapologetic Zimmer power stuff going on. I *like* it.

I love it too. One of this year´s best.
But now you mention it, which parts are Kaska´s work, if you (or somebody else) know it? I have 4 tracks of the score labeled as Kaska´s ("Main Menu", "Blood River", "Breaking the Ice" and "Bridge of the Ancients"), but I don´t know if it´s a reliable info. And I assume that even if those tracks are by Kaska, they are based around Debney´s themes? Too many doubts too soon this morning
