    I'm in a Williams mood and this is another great score to a film that I think was underrated in Spielberg's canon.

    LOOKING FOR RICHARD - Howard Shore

    Listened to this last night, and it's growing on me on every listen. A dark, heavy work for mixed choir and dark orchestra (and organ!) that really has its medieval touch. It's missing lighter moments and variations to be able to compete with the massive Lord of the Rings, but as a more mature work from Howard Shore, it's certainly among his best work.

    Oh, total agree about the film. A marvelous motion picture that not too many got. The war as seen through a young boys eyes. While the last act tends to drag a bit the rest of the film is simply magnificent!

    NP : THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN - William Walton



    Though I love Goodwin's score I really felt in the mood to just play this part of the CD. Excellent work with more than a touch of Malcolm Arnold who also conducts it.

    Battle In The Air is a magnificent cue that owes everything to Arnold's concert piece Tam O'Shanter, it's also the only Walton piece that remains in the reguler release of the film and carries the scene without dialogue or sound effects, a superb bit of film making.

  10. I love EMPIRE OF THE SUN. It's pretty much Spielberg's best (for me), gave the world Christian Bale, does justice to a fine book, and features a John Malkovitch character so interesting I want to see a film about his adventures.

    Haha! How's the music otherwise?
    I've ordered a bunch of his scores but I'm yet to get them. The only one I listened to (La Terre: Vue du ciel) was pretty good.
  12. I like Amar's music. He does the fusion of world music and minimalism far better than Philip Glass ever has. It's probably not as grave as LA TERRE VUE DU CIEL, but there's a lot of gentle beauty here.

    Let me think of two strong contenders first?


    NP : CHAPLIN - John Barry



    A nice gentle, poignant score and Barry makes good use of Chaplin's own composition, the lovely and evergreen Smile.

  17. n.p. WILLIAM ROSS - the evening star

    Irresistible, passionate and sweepingly melodic, this is one big and pure delight from start to finish; equipped with beyond words-beautiful themes like the one heard in "Rosie Comes Home" for the first time or the addictive main theme, this is an instantly lovable and heart-warming orchestral gem i'd wholly recommend to every lover of quality film music.



    It's also one of the last -- if not thee last -- scores Jack Hayes was orchestrated fully on.

    I love it! I really wished Shore would further move in this Goldenthal league some more, this score is simply brilliant.


    It IS an amazing score but as a listening experience I just can't take too much of it, in fact I'm already taken it off and looking to play something else.

    NP: Home on the Range - Alan Menken

    Everyone needs to listen to a bit of Menken once in a while (it would, I suspect, solve all the world's problems). This one's relatively minor, but the songs are great, and the score is probably the best modern-day Copland pastiche for a western.

    In terms of songs, I think BATB and THOND are really outstanding. Though I like all of his Disney musicals, really. Still listening to Home on the Range now... such good fun.
