But IE has never crashed on me. No idea about security, but since I'm still alive I assume I've had no problems there either. I might give it a try if it really is faster though.
  1. Surely the security issue isn't a major cause for concern - if you're sensible and have a reasonable level of additional security (anti-virus software, firewall, etc).

What about if you don't want to have those dragging your overall pc performance's down? I don't have an antivirus system, nor a firewall and neither does Bregt from what i remember. I use firefox, no problems at all.

    Come on! You stubborn Brit.

I already said that it is a lot faster (and it is noticable), much safer, has so much add-ons and plugins that you could make it a very handy tool instead of a big, old and fat browser that feels like it hasn't used oil for three years.

It's like comparing JNH to Desplat. JNH is fine, does its job well, but it lacks what Desplat seems to have. wink

Well, Microsoft is responsible for the slow progress internet by not expanding IE6 (which blatantly ignores so many web standards) and the web made, until the likes of Firefox, Google, ... started to create useful and rich applications, that put the development of websites in the spotlight again, and made it actually interesting and fascinating again (haha, a geek speaking). Before that, with the Kingdom of IE6, it was just a mess.

And microsoft is responsible for the huge performance issues and dragging everyday users are facing for the last 3-4 years with the horrendous o.s that calls itself VISTA which essentially drives back all the hardware's capabilities just because it's stupid and lazy, and comes packed with every new system (desktop or laptop). They're responsible for the same accusations for countless years even before Vista's appearance, even since the older windows operating systems; Users are forced to buy their junk which comes along with new pcs adn are also forced to spend more and more money onto third-party additional software that attempts to fix Microsoft's errors, on operating systems that Microsoft themselves openly admit their fail upon, for all those years. And now, they're supposedly going to miraculously correct all those, after 30+ years of studying and planning it wrong and fooling us all, with the new wonder-o.s, Windows 7.

    Any actual PRO-ms arguments?

Cheers, Demetris! That's put my misconception firmly to bed!!

Oh yes. Firefox is open source, supported by a whole community (while IE is not). It runs on the Gecko engine, which is also open source. It doesn't ignore standards, and tries to follow them as close as possible (as is Opera, who does that even better!). Both are innovative, full of great/new ideas, which IE "inspired" and gave those features an other name and claim them unique (like they so often do). So it's cruel to say that Firefox is just a subset.

I'm slightly confused that no one has been able to come back with some very clear advantages of Firefox over IE, Southall. I am by no means a champion (whatever works, is fine), but there simply are some serious advantages for me to switch to FF.
Anyway, the main reasons for me for using Firefox are

    1) platform independency and adherence to industry standards
I had several occasions where updates to IE had a severe impact on other programs I had installed that made use of Windows items (mainly visual and rendering aspects) that were modified by the browser update.
I'll just repeat that for clarity: OS aspects were modified to suit the browser.
That is just unacceptable. Not on a point of principle, but on a point of continuity and personal productivity.

    2) modifiability
Due to Firefox being Open Standard, I was able to get acquainted with the concept of "add-ons": community-created little subprograms for Firefox that change or add certain behaviour, from the sheer aesthetic (coloured tabs...which is more useful than one might think for distinction!) to the useful (like incredibly efficient download managers: I've had literally hundreds of downloads queued up, and didn't ever have to look at that again in the knowledge that everything would be properly downloaded to the proper places) to the absolutely essential (a backup option that backs up your configuration, your profile, your history, and you passwords for secure storage offline).

Two excellent reasons for me to easily prefer Firefox over IE.

    1) google "how to remove ie8"

    2) if you maintain your pc properly, there's no reason why firefox wouldn't work. Try http://filehippo.com/ for free software like ccleaner and defraggler.

Well, if you uninstall all obsolete stuff, fix your registry with one program like regvac or these 2 freeware here:

    http://www.bestfreewaredownload.com/dow … jglsg.html
    http://www.snapfiles.com/get/alregcleaner.html

then use (Freeware) ccleaner for cleaning up junk

and then defragment with (freeware) defraggler, you'll be fine.

I'd also install a good freeware antivirus and perform a FULL SYSTEM SCAN too, like this one here:

Just got me a new phone (a near-fatal right turn in the jungles of La Gomera made me realize the wonderful implications of a GPS option!), but it comes with a 17,000 page manual!

Now I'm trying to find out how to place a simple call, but under the "place a simple call" header in the index they just talk about voice-activated contact lists... cry
It may be a while before I'm able to get to (and understand) the GPS opions...

Well, as you describe such a terrible company purveying such terrible product, they must surely be on the verge of going out of business if they've been doing everything so badly for 30+ years. It's hard indeed to understand how they have survived this long!

Whenever I've tried other companies' products I've found them wanting compared with MS's, so I've returned. I get the impression that serious users (who -unlike me - don't just browse the internet and use Office applications) may well be able to find stuff that's more suitable for them, but surely for the standard user like me, Microsoft needs no defence because they offer the best product. I understand the vitriol against them because lots of people just naturally hate huge companies, but there seem few valid arguments which successfully support the notion that the average user of a PC should avoid their products.

Having said all that, I'll give Firefox another whirl since people say it's quicker! wink

No, i don't have a problem with a company's magnitude or the money they make, as long as they serve me. That's a ridiculous argument. i like a company that gives me what i want; stability and performance. I have no problem if that company is a big or a small one as long as i get what i want. Microsoft tortures all the serious users out there and it does that 'cause it have ends, connections with hardware and pc manufactures and sellers which force their crap upon the world; if we actually had a choice, things would be different.

I'm sure some day you will.

But (again) speaking for the vast majority of people who are standard users, I wonder whether there's any other company that's had such an effect on people's lives during my 31 years on the planet, changing them immeasurably for the better. I suspect not. The only other candidate I can think of is the company that makes Kettle Chips.
