    Great news Chris!

All the agent has to do now is get that movie deal!

I've told her that as part of that deal she needs to get final approval on the film score composer wink. I'm sure a studio would go for that...

It's a middle grade (for kids ages 10-12ish) historical sci-fi. A scientist caught up in the DNA race in the 1950s decides to experiment with reanimation and brings a dead Japanese WWII soldier back. This man ends up living with a family in a small California town. The book is told through the eyes of the daughter in this family, a feisty 12-year-old. It's got a really engaging voice, and I think it will appeal to adults as well as kids (the themes are pretty universal). So think Frankenstein meets To Kill a Mockingbird (it's not too presumptive to compare my wife with Shelley or Lee is it?wink).
  4. Wow, that's abig step for your wife, Christopher! Congrats!

I'm sure the book will find many readers on this board. Many SciFi and Fantasy fans around film music boards!

    That's wonderful! cheesy

So many people want to write and publish a book, but only a few really try. Your wife tried, that's great, and now she's even one of a lucky few who gets the book published.

Did she have to do a lot of research or is she a historic / scientist? I'd love to write for that age too, still enough wonder and childlike fantasy but also old enough for complex things that require some intelligence and development. And indeed, it's these kind of books that are great for adults as well.
  6. She did have to do some research. She read up on the 1950s, and on Watson and Crick and the DNA race. She also did quite a bit of research into the Japanese culture. There's some of this that came more naturally to her, though. She knows what it's like to grow up in a small religious town. Her grandfather was Filipino and her grandmother was white, so they dealt with a lot of racism that my wife's mother grew up with. I imagine that no amount of research will convince people who know better, but I think she's done enough research for most to suspend their disbelief.

Fantastic, Christopher! Must be very exciting for her and you.

Alan, I'm also looking forward to the cuckoos. My best picture of a cuckoo is about as low quality as yours, but I'm determined to get a better picture this year.

Anyway, what made my day better is all the bird arrivals these days. It's a wonderful time to be a bird nut.

"Low quality"!! It is a good quality photo - it has arrows too! - but it is just that the cuckoo is quite far away.

My sincerest apologies. The photo is a work of art. The composition alone is breathtaking, and the arrow is a stroke of genius. National Geographic would be lucky to have this photo on the cover.

God, I love our King Harald. Here's a photo series of a recent visit he had to the Amazon:

    I especially like this photo:

Not bad for an old man. I was in the Amazon myself a few years ago, so it brings back memories. Plus, I've also met and talked to His Majesty himself, so I feel we have a double connection going on here. smile

    Your *are* is missing.

The author does say "Although I’ve tried to keep the massive pop culture matte shots to a minimum", still, I do think the two of yours that I can see are sublime examples.

Howabout worst matte shots? Off the top of my head I nominate one of my favourite sci-fi films, WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, the paintings at the end when they arrive on the new planet are a bloody poor show.

    Hmmmm...so it is. And I can't find a substitute.
It was an excellent painting of the Death Star's main chute from Return Of The Jedi.

The author does say "Although I’ve tried to keep the massive pop culture matte shots to a minimum"

Sure. Fair enough, and I think he provided a couple of exquisite, landmark examples.
It just so happens that those Return Of The Jedi ones are my favourites. smile

I seem to remember a piss-poor effort on the original Battlestar Galactica film. Sadly I could only find this picture, but it's a good indication(apparently I wasn't the only one irked smile ).

But the end shot from When Worlds Collide positively takes the cake.
I gather some studio spin doctor put the story out there that it was a mock-up, never intended for actual use...until the money ran out and they had to...but I think rather than a mock-up it was a fuck-up.

I think there may be truth in what you say, the film isn't exactly lacking in great effects shots.

  10. The fact that I will have an academic presentation about philosophical aspects of Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line next Monday and that I may even quote something like FSM CD liner notes (I referred to the liners to Days of Heaven when I wrote that Malick went to Italy to be with Morricone when scoring the film) in the paper. Just a nerd's delight biggrin

Today I was at the event where Elin defended her doctorate study (is that a correct description?) on which she worked 9 years. I was unable to attend the presentation itself due to work but was there for the reception afterwards and a short chat. (Maxime, his girlfriend and also Thomas were earlier then me).

I'm so relieved for her that she is now finished successfully this study, that has been an integral part of her recent life. I'm glad that she finally made it. So next time you meet her, say "hello doctor". wink I also want to add that she credited us in the acknowledgements of the paper as 'the soundtrack fans' that helped her during this time, with 'witty comments, humour and support'. Another credit went to Bear, but that comes as no surprise I think. wink

    punk

During the reception, she also did a 'birthday tango' in which all her tango friends and even some professors danced a few moments with her. The location was one of Ghents classiest and oldest university buildings and this was in the impressive income hall. Quite a thing!

    Congrats again Elin! kiss

But I'm very impressed, and mighty proud of her! Well done, girl! Well done!
