How much money difference in your life Demetris will the master's degree make over your bachelor?

Well, at the current state of things dear Tom, i'd say we are not looking at money vs more money, but at a "there's a slight chance i'll be able to find a good stable job" VS "i'll most possibly find a good stable job" sad rolleyes

I only asked because I've a friend who ended up with less in terms of a job because they continued the education process, in otherwords giving up a sure thing.

I've always heard that staying in education doesn't necessarily get you a better-paid job at the end of your studies - it just gets you into other areas of employment.

Absolutely. In this country (I don't know if this is the case elsewhere), there is almost a feeling now that it's expected that you go to university. I think I read that the government's target is for half of all school-leavers to go to university - which is a noble aim, but of course there's a great flaw - there aren't nearly enough graduate-level jobs to go round. My sister got a good degree but ended up doing a job she could have done if she'd left school at 16 - and with the burden of a huge student debt which will take her many years to pay off. My advice to anyone would be to do a degree if you love the subject and love to learn, but if it's just a means to getting a job, think long and hard.
  3. When it comes to doing a degree there's two main reasons for doing one. Firstly, there's the reason James mentioned - doing a degree for the love of the subject and giving you a stepping stone to a certain area of work. And secondly, there seems to be the need for a degree in any subject to show a prospective employer some aspect of your character.

In our final two years in the Cell Biology department at Glasgow there were people - like myself - who was doing this subject because we had ideas of going into this field of work. But there were others who were just there to get a degree - and then go into the civil service (where a degree was expected.)

(With my example of degree leading to civil service, did I just give some examples of how having a degree gets you more money!?!?)

Exactly why I'm doing music. I love it but I have no idea what I want to do afterward... mostly because I don't think about the future too much. I'm a 'cross that bridge when I come to it' kinda guy.

On the other end of the spectrum is an acquaintance who received an inheritance early in her life (18 I think) and has spent the last 40 years going to school full time. She has multiple bachelor, master, and is also a doctor at least twice. She is a spinster who lives alone in a beautiful small house and is perfectly content with herself. Needless to say she is quite intelligent!
