    Congrats Alan (and Anne, obviously!)!
Hope she's feeling better soon! Did you have anything special planned?

Anne was back at the doctor's today - and they say that she's got mumps. A condition that's so rare nowadays that the doctor who saw her had to get another doctor to come and give a second opinion as he had never seen a case before!!

And, what's more, apparently doctors are obliged to report any cases of mumps to the local authorities - just so they can monitor things to see if they need to start a vaccination programme.

I can't help but think that this whole affair (including Anne's infection) is as a result of all the fuss about the MMR vaccination and the (supposed/unfounded) link with the vaccine and autism. This led to a reduction in the number of parents having their children being vaccinated for mumps a few years back.
    sad

BTW, this should really now be in the other thread that's opposite to this one but for continuity reasons I've posted it here.

Alan, sorry to hear that. Is it something serious? What's that thing "mumps"? I've either never heard of it or if i had, it's possibly under a different name or something.

    MUMPS?!?
    No WAY!shocked

    Shit!
Sorry to hear it, Allan. sad (And I think you may be spot on with your observations about that stupid, STUPID vaccine fear angry though I have to say I got whooping cough four years back, which was traced back to the current vaccine -for my generation- probably not being effective any more against new strains)

(Mumps has been viewed as a kiddie disease for decades, D., giving toddlers swollen glands, giving the impression of really swollen cheeks.)

I guess that's serious if you're an adult, right? How is it treated?

Never heard of "mumps" before, but then looked it up. It's called 'Kusma' in Norway - and yeah, I've very rarely heard about it happening to adults. I hope she recovers as quickly as possible, Alan. My best wishes.
    I am extremely serious.

Treatment is symptomatic - really just trying to limit the effects of the consequences. Paracetamol, ibupofen, etc. Vaccination is an option in children.

I've never had mumps and this observation is of concern "...The disease is self-limiting, and general outcome is good, even if other organs are involved. Mumps viral infections in adult males carry a 25% risk that the testes may become infected which in rare cases leads to sterility..."

But, in my case, it's not much of a concern as my job is done in this department...if you know what I mean!! wink cool

I had mumps when I was younger, caught it from a classmate who had it (who also infected two other people). I remember the swelling hurt like hell, especially in the morning. Thankfully my case was quite mild and got treated quickly.

Really sorry to hear that, Alan! I wish you all the best and hope she recovers soon! smile

What's made my day a bit better...?

Trying to sort out IP addresses, nameservers, and loads of other technical jargon (I don't think) either of us really understand with Team Giacchino. And after the bizarre day I've had, this seems rather normal... spin

Sparkling weather today, practically our first glimpse of summer. 20 degrees Celsius, no clouds, chirping birds, green lawns, blossoming flowers, loads of people outside in the parks etc. I'm going to spend the night in the woods, in fact, away from the huzzle and buzzle(?) of the city, sleeping under the open sky!
    I am extremely serious.

It's always seemed rather incongruent to me that Labour Day was celebrated by... a day off. slant
Anyway, I'm not participating in this communist take-over brainwashing façade so I'm at work (...and logging into MT now and again as the rest of the world appears to be off so there's sod-all to do dizzy )

Our weather in San Diego in May and June takes an interesting turn much of the time. It is overcast much of the time, the high and low are only 10 degrees apart (68-58). We call it May gray and June gloom.
