Forgive my ignorance, but what is a 'name day'?

  2. A name/namesday is the birthday of a Saint whose name a person bears. Some countries celebrate those with best wishes and small gifts.

    Congratulations Stavroula! cheesy

It's not celebrated like a birthday, or is it? The birthday is a bigger party than the name day I guess?

Strangely I was born on St. Anthony's Day. Unknown to my parents until I pointed it out to them.

Thank you all very much for the wishes! A name day is exactly what Pawel said. we tend to celebrate name days more with family and birthdays is more for having fun with friends. smile

I will give a poster presentation at the ornithological conference this weekend. It's my first time to show my work to the public, outside my university... I'm getting nervous but also excited smile

Very cool. Hope it will be loads of fun.

I love birdies too and have become quite skilled at identifying species.

Edited to add: Ooops, just noticed the date. So change "Hope it will be loads of fun" to "Hope it was loads of fun". How did it go?

Yeah! Me too! Anything in the air is a regular birdie. Anything on water is a float birdie.
Anything in the snow is a penguin.

I wonder? If Duck was something that was never on any menu and so you had nothing to base it on, would you still say it's halfway between chicken and tuna?

Take the Dodo, the famously extinct bird, you'd think it would probably taste like Turkey but apparantly it tasted awful and was not wiped out by settlers to Mauritius killing them for food but by rats brought in on boats who ate their eggs.

Duck would be between chicken and turkey of course. I'd think that penguins would pick up some fishy taste due to swimming in the ocean.

Interesting fact. Judging by the dodo's looks though, I'm not surprised they tasted awful: http://www.dodo.blog.br/wp-content/uplo … n_dodo.jpg

In old Dutch text from seafarers they were referred to as "Disgustbirds" for that very reason.
