MICHAEL GIACCHINO

Super 8: the score was great, and just what I was expecting. Giacchino is a master at holding back. The better to knock your socks off at the end. That's what he did the whole first few seasons of LOST, that's what he did with Star Trek and that's what he does here. The finale track knocked my socks off. After the credits I found one in an old popcorn bucket and the other halfway into a box of milk duds. Of course, as a consequence of this restrained style I couldn't really hear a large portion of the music before that part very well. It's a kind of loud movie. But there were at least 2 themes I really liked. So, looking forward to the soundtrack release! -

Master at holding back? Nice way to cover up: lazy I didn't hear any bursts at the end, it was all passable and forgettable, serviceable though indeed!Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Just received UP, and its artwork is brilliant! The booklet consists of pictures from the recording sessions, but also - better yet - beautiful artwork from pre-production including early character designs and pastel paintings of settings. The CD meanwhile has a very old fashioned Disneyland design from the early Disney soundtrack releases. That, combined with the lack of CGI pictures and black and white pictures gives the impression of a release from the 40's. Pretty nifty.
Best. Booklet. Of. The. Year.
So far. One of the reasons why I love Pixar. -

The score doesn't get a very good mix in the film.

Well it's bloody typical it came out on iTunes early, now I have to avoid temptation. I was hoping it wouldn't be out until August so I could see the movie without hearing this. Must. Avoid. -

It's breezy, fan, Mancini-esque, love it! Far better than Cars 2 (fun at places, but too loud)
HEre's what i wrote in facebook:My, my, such a delightful surprise! Michael Giacchino's MONTE CARLO, is smooth, jazzy and Mancini-'an' with a touch of Incredibles and of course Ratatouille; lovely, breezy music that sends you elsewhere in both place and time. Recommended.
Favorite cues: the main theme whenever it appears, pairing up, time to go, missing links, it's too much, just a regular girl, grace be with you, of another colour (extended), making lightLove Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

There are some good jazzy tracks that sound like they could be from Ratatouille, but there are just too damn many of them. Perhaps if D could post a selection I would enjoy it more.
As Southall points out in his review: 48 minutes, 40 tracks.
It is more enjoyable than Cars 2, however Super 8 is Giacchino's best output this year so far.
I hope M:I 4 kicks that ass of all of these. -

The theme is good and is indeed a bit Manciniesque but the album is very hard work. -
