Why not listen to the original Williams instead then ? wink

Because Williams is not writing the Williams' music we (or I) liked so much from the past.

    Example:

Empire Strikes back VS all the new Star Wars scores
Indy I, II, III vs Indy IV

    etc.

I personally would LOVE Talgorn scoring a new Indy pic instead of Williams, seriously... I think we will be pleasantly suprised. Williams has lost his spark somewhat. I don't want to put Wiliams down, not al all... but he disappointed a lot of us with Indy IV and the last Star Wars scores.

Listen to this, its energetic and exciting, young.

Wow, it sounds great IMO. Horner's back!

    Can't wait for the movie!

An Oscar nomination is a shoe-in IMO, but James could very well walk away with the Oscar.

Anyway, I think this time Horner had to be more concentrated in the temp tracks for the first time. A lot of Newton Howard and Narnia in this score.

For more I enjoyed Avatar in my listens, Do you not feel insulted when You hear the 4 notes danger motif? I mean Horner for sure Know what the fans thinks about it and he still put them into his scores... I don't know guys.

Wow that cue sounds indeed brilliant. Must be one hell of a showpiece in the film. A splendidly proper Williams hommage if I ever heard one, much like Wataru Hokoyama's Afrika.

Surely Spielberg must acknowledge that the last Indy score wasn't great, but then John may well be his best friend so I don't see them parting ways until one of them leaves this world. And IMO they both missed the ball completely. The movie itself was uninspired and not fun.

Anyway, this is incredibly OFF-TOPIC. shame

Come on. Talgorn might be quite good but don't overdo it. It only ever leads to disappointment. I don't want to hear someone else pretending to be John Williams (not that I think that's what Talgorn does); if I want to hear John Williams I'll take the real thing.

Talgorn IS extremely good, its not overdoing it. I give credit when its due. I truly believe as a dedicated filmscore enthousiast since the early '80's, that he is a true and amazing talent. For of all, Indy 4 is pretty awful. There are a few good cues but a whole handful of composers out did John Williams last year. Munich has a few solid string cues (which basically are left overs from Angela's Ashes anyway) but mostly forgettable. Sith is solid but no The Phantom Menace. War of the Worlds and Geisha were the two scores from that list that did impress me.

Anyway, here's a good list of composers that are doing a Williams better than Williams right now!

James Hannigan on the Harry Potter Video Game scores
Colin O'Malley with Superman Returns The Video Game
Mark Griskey on The Force Unleashed
Frederic Talgorn on Asterix Aux Jeux Olympiques
Wataru Hokoyama on Afrika and Resident Evil 5
Chris Tilton on Night At The Museum 2 Video Game
John Debney on Lair... don't laugh... I'll take "Diviner Battle" over "Battle of the Heroes" anyday.
    Phillipe Rombi on Angel

Those are a few that come to mind.

Indeed. Talking about far-stretched statements...Williams is the king of his own style, everyone else might touch a bit of his feet at best. Really, i am aware of the fact that his later style has disappointed a lot of his stronger and most avid fans, but it's called evolution of music, something Williams not only follows but even pioneered to a degree, when it comes to film music. The fact that those composers are trying to sound like how he sounded 20 years ago should say something about where Williams actually IS today, in comparison.

I love Rombi's "Angel". But he's mostly on the Delerue side of things i'd say. As for the rest, there's VERY good film music in there, but it's got limited to zero soul, esp. if we're talking about Lair or Afrika, for instance. No matter how good they sound and how much they satisfy our nostalgia and bring back teenage years' goosebumps, they're ages behind Williams' compositional status and abilities.

To be fair, I like Afrika because it sounds good. I also like Angel because it sounds good. It's nothing to do with nostalgia or bringing back "teenage years' goosebumps." If I want that, I'll go listen to the scores I feel genuinely nostalgic about.

Quick question: Is there anything you yourself feel nostalgic about? From what I can gather, it seems as though you look upon it as an affliction rather than a positive feeling! I LOVE having nostalgia for films and scores from my childhood. It's real magic.

I am the kind of guy who lives the day and the present to the utmost, to be honest. I rarely feel the need to feel nostalgia.

As for your points, that's what i said too: they sound good. BUt i am sure for someone like Erik, nostalgia plays a big factor too; it's not a bad thing, just observing; Thus his disappointment with John Williams getting more "serious" during the last years. It's like the childhood hero you never expect him to disappoint you!

I haven't heard most of those so will have to check a lot of them out. I did like Angel and Afrika is pretty good. Night at the Museum 2 is a lot (lot, lot) better than the music for the film. I've listened to Lair three times, which was three times too many. I couldn't make it through Talgorn's Asterix score when I tried it and have been meaning to try it again. None of those particularly reminds me of Williams (apart from the direct quotations in Lair) though - and while I didn't think Indy 4 was as good as the previous Indy scores (particularly the first two), I still think it was more impressive than any of the other scores I've mentioned in this paragraph. I guess I'm just more comfortable with Williams's modern style than you (and everyone else, apparently). I do seem to listen to his newer (last 10-15 years) scores more than the older ones.

As for the nostalgia point, it must be pretty obvious by now that nostalgia plays an enormous part in the majority of film music fans' listening (there wouldn't be the "give me every note!" mindset if people liked it for musical rather than filmic reasons).

Williams was better 20 years ago then he is today! FACT!

BTW, who was the composer that brought back that magical romantic sound of the Golden Age for a small low budget sci-fi film in 1977? Right... seems like the same thing is happening again so I applaud those younger composers for attempting to bring back that magical sound and style that Williams for some reason, call it evolution if you'd like, has lost. And can you honestly say that Williams' evolution from Raiders... heck, from Last Crusade to Indy 4 is for the best?
