Anyway, I actually remembered now, so here goes.
Too bad, all of you who said FALSE... as it's very much true!
Amazing, I know, but the Kootwijkerzand ("Kootwijk's Sands") in the Dutch national park De Veluwe is the biggest shifting sand desert in Europe.
Shifting sands is basically how dunes come into existence: winds cause fine sand to create and erode dunes, giving the impression of walking sand hills (hence "shifting sands"). While it was always a barren place, the Kootwijkerzand increased in size somewhere in the 19th century with deforestation caused by major cultivation and industry.
Interestingly these days, the desert is considered a biotope of national heritage and major efforts are taken to maintain it. If left unchecked, the desert would soon settle and acquire a more tundra-like aspect due to the rapid formation of crusts and mosses.
Truth is stranger than fiction.

Oh, that surprises me, because I was thinking of the Loonse en Drunense Duinen.
Reading a bit through wikipedia still doesn't clear things up because on one page (Dutch) it says the biggest shifting sand of The Netherlands is the Loonse en Drunense Duinen and on another page (Dutch) it says Kootwijkerzand is the biggest of Europe...
I guess the problem is the whole National Park L&DD also consists of some pine forest and other vegetation, so maybe that's why the sand area can't be measured or something.
Anyway, Kootwijkerzand is 700 ha and L&DD is 3500 ha!
And here's a picture of Quinn playing in the L&DD.

Interesting!
It doesn't change the answer as it's still in The Netherlands, but it's funny that TWO such places in such a closely poulated country vie for the exalted position of Primary European Desert. :-)
Anyway, Kootwijkerzand is 700 ha and L&DD is 3500 ha!
You regionist, you!

Cuuuuuute!!!!
On the new challenge: wow...I have NO idea on the nerves in the eyball proper, but as you can feel pain in them, I would guess that you'd be able to feel whether or not they're open or not...on the other hand I seem to recall prisoner accounts from completely blacked-out cells who were faced with exact such a dilemma.

I'm gonna say FALSE. I believe that a blind person can tell that their eyelids are open, even if they can't see anything. Eyelids do have nerves after all, that feeling of wind on your eyeballs is something you can feel whether or not you can see anything.
There's also the fact that someone can come over and tell you: "Hey, Bob, your eyes are open," even if you're blind. So, there, see? It's possible to know that your eyes are open even without images.
