Hancock - John Powell
Very enjoyable, probably the pick of his four scores so far this year. Very Danny Elfman-ish in places.
Pfft. His contribution to Kung Fu Panda and his score to Horton Hears a Who! are much better IMO. PS I Love You is also a much more enjoyable album than Hancock. It just seems really bland to me.
Pfft. Horton is same-old same-old, PS I Love You standard generic rom-com, Panda silly Zimmer stuff and at least this is a bit different for him. No masterpiece, but nice to hear an action score from him which isn't entirely the same vein as his others. In terms of this year, Stop-Loss was OK and so was Jumper but this sounds a lot fresher to me.
Really? It has n.o.t.h.i.n.g. No themes, no grip, no structure, nothing. P.S. I love you is not standard rom-com, it's the style Powell created with I AM SAM / GIGLI only expanded and even more beautiful, with GORGEOUS melodies. Although i agree on what you said about Panda.
Stop loss was his best score this year imo, the main theme and the final renditions are some of the most touching and emotionally intense material he's ever delivered, imo.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

With the exception of UNITED 93 (which is more of a thriller in the scoring), I don't go for POwell dramas. Particularly the romantic kind. One man's 'gorgeous' is another man's 'disposable'.
NP: Deep Blue (George Fenton)

NP:secret of Sahara (morricone)
the word for decrive this score : Inventive.
Few scores are more inventive than this morricone. IMHO better than more "easy" score like The mission. -

If there's one thing in the world I don't need to do, it's listen to more scores from both composers. Panda is just Powell doing his best Zimmer impression. You can tell some bits are Powell, but his style is so dialled-down and washed-away it may just as well be anyone. (The second part of that sentence could be used to describe any score which has ever come from Zimmer's co-composers and the like.) -

Actually i agree, no matter how fun it was for some, both Horton and Kung Fu Panda mostly $contained irritatingly fluffy and noisy light-spirited music of the standard Powell-loves-Zimmer sound throughout the largest part of their running time. Horton was more Powell per se, but still of the same nature; constantly changing moods, colors, tempi, styles; tiring.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Can you tell me please one example where Powell is showing his love for Zimmer in Horton?
Panda, it's clearly a powell score. You can notice what bits are by Zimmer, because it has his Thunderbirds orchestrations (Tai Lung Scapes, for example) -

No, I mean...The Mission seems a easier listen than Sahara because The mission has more famous main themes. The mission is not easy, of course. -

Along with a ( large'ish ) handful of others this is one of the most played scores I have, I think I even wore out the original LP release!?

Yes, We have. Because it's not true what Demetris is saying.
Panda is a little bit more close to Zimmer only because the "old" Powell sound was a little bit more masculine and not so orchestral over the top like Powell is these days. But Panda still remains a powell score with some tracks and themes by Zimmer.
Only because Panda has Horns, it doesn't mean it's a Zimmer score. The trumpets, choral, the bourne Electronics anb the more "complex" action tracks are more close to Evolution than to At world's End, for example. The "Bridge Battle" or "shi fu faces..." are masculine action tracks with horns, but far to be the driving melodies with percusion what Zimmer usually compose.
The only real Zimmer sound is "Tai Lung Scapes" ,the epic theme rendition in "Sacreed Pool of tears", "Peach tree of Wisdom", "the dragon Scrolls" and "oogsay Ascends"
NP:Invasion (ottman)
I guess im against a lot of things, but this is one of my fav by Ottman. -

I love the songs as well as the score. Hans Zimmer and Mark Mancina did brilliant job on arrangements... especially Zimmer's Circle Of Life, which inspired directors to change the whole opening sequence from funny dialogue-based scene into that inspirational opening.

I don't think I can live without this score
and I cannot tell you how furious I am at Disney Records because they gave it such a bad treatment on CD. I hope there's a complete release one day!

Although this score was also treated more or less as TLK was treated by Disney Records, we're fortunate at least we've got a nearly complete academy promo with great quality to listen to!

I love that score!
I think I may like it slightly more than the other two, but if so, not by much. His new themes are all brilliant, and I love how towards the end of Drink Up Me Hearties Yo Ho he combines the Up Is Down theme and the Will/Elizabeth string theme. I Don't think Now Is the Best Time is also one of my favorite action tracks. Fantastic!

Agreed. This is one of the reasons why I've decided to limit my participation on this board. The Zimmer/RC conversations are becoming just as generic and clichéd as his music is.
