  1. The US economy is to some extent the most flexible in the world. It will be interesting to see how it builds from the bottom up again from this downturn.

I would welcome and applaud such a thread (though it would have the dangerous potential of becoming a "lecture" thread rather than a discussion thread, I guess slant )

  3. I'm not sure I'm up to typing the lecture. wink I was chatting about this with a couple of economists at work yesterday. We were thinking ultimately about things like labour mobility (particularly compared to Europe - Americans will move anywhere the work is), aspirational spirit (the old joke about the American poor kid who sees a man with a limo and says he will one day own the limo vs the British poor kid who sees the same man and wants to trash the guy's limo), potential for group enthusiasm, absence of the same sort of class system that limits mobility in other areas (despite the best efforts of some recent presidents), etc. Their impressive stock of wealth in resources and capital is definitely not a bad position to start from - there's a lot of resources to reallocate when things have fallen apart.

Perhaps it would be better to say, given these parameters, it should not be surprising if America is the most flexible economy in the world. It will be interesting to compare its future potential to China, a country whose history is a testament to a system that encourages stability and glacial change, but has recently introduced more dynamic elements.

Ah, I didn't follow that thread for a while, afraid of being mentioned myself. biggrin

But holy shit. Palin isn't even capable of putting valid sentences together. She wants to say too much or so. I can't follow her very well. She also never makes a point, but that could be just her stupidity?

  6. A book has recently come out that offers a lot of interesting behind-the-scenes gossip and insight on the 2008 election:

The sections on John Edwards, forgotten and disgraced Third Wheel of the Democrat race, are pretty heartbreaking. Simple mistakes and simple flaws can undo anyone.

Anyone following the race today? Why are the polls in the past few elections always so close? Are the candidates so similar to each other?
    Kazoo
  7. I would be interested in the answer to that question myself.

My theory (not supported by any facts) is that it has more to do with the groups of people actually supporting the two major parties. And whatever the exit polls are saying the previous weeks, that mobilizes the followers of the loosing party to go and vote, hence balancing out the vote.

So 50/50 it kinda ends up at.

    Anybody have other ideas?

I really hope Americans aren't as stupid as to pull their country years back by electing a chauvinistic right wing fanatic retard to be their president.

Some random thoughts-> I think when there only exist two parties fighting for the power in a democracy, they'll automatically end up splitting the voters 50/50. If one party only appealed to 20% of voters, they'd never be in power; so they'd have to adjust their policies until they have a fighting chance. With two parties working towards this goal, 50/50 is inevitable. This 50/50 split has to do with people's core values, so the fluctuations will tend to be small.

Creationists should not be allowed to vote. But they should be entitled to education.

You've hit the nail on the head. A winner takes all system tends towards a two party split. (And sometimes those parties are persisting coalitions of smaller parties.)

  9. Can they not just split the country into two and put all the Obama supporters in one half and the Romney supporters in the other? There, sorted.

I'm thankful it's a GO here. We're civil enough to deal with it. I think it's awesome that even the board moderator started one!

I've been teaching the US election (among other things) in my first praxis period in upper secondary school. Some pupils are interested, others are not. It's been challenging. But what is cool is that I've learned some things myself in doing the research for the classes.

Go Obama! (I wonder if there is anyone here who cheers on the Republicans? And would they have the guts to say so?).
    I am extremely serious.
  12. I guess I would have the guts, but I'm not republincan minded...
I wonder if any of the Europeans would be pro-Romney on this board? I guess not as our own politics are on average way more liberal (socialistic) oriented than the republican views.

Maybe some of our American members are of republican mind-set.
I would like to add that for me there is a difference between 'republican mindset' and Tea Party propaganda.

Just saying... I have a friend who's republican (or voted that way anyways) a while back... But I don't think I could be friends with a Tea Party follower...

Why not? I'm sure beyond all the laughter stuff we get in our media, he has a good plan for his country? I might be naive though, as I usually am. wink
