I don't really think anyone's ever been talked out of their religion.
If they harbour any doubts in the first place, you'll generally find people go out and search for alternative takes.
But challenging them in the rootedness of their faith seems -with all respect- a waste of everybody's time.

Spending time on a religious board I can testify that I've seen numerous people being deconverted over time through debate, and I'm talking about really certain and dedicated believers here. I've also seen many smaller shifts, like a creationist turning into an evolutionist, or a conservative and judgemental christian becoming very liberal and openminded. Interestingly I've only seen it go the other way once, i.e. a conversion (though this wasn't achieved through debate).

It's true that often debates seem to go on forever, without any detectable change, but over the years it's surprising how many people actually do change their beliefs.

As D often jokes that I'm the "atheist" of the forum (yep, crazy ol' me and my outspoken non-religious ways! Oh what a hoot I am! dizzy ), I thought I'd show you all a leaflet I got through the post today. Yes, this is an ACTUAL serious attempt to entice people to go to their church:

  1. Looks very much Jehovah's Witnesses? Catholics wouldn't quote the Bible that extensively.

Protestants. Catholics don't quote Bible that extensively. In fact until 20th Century a Catholic couldn't read Bible on his own, it was read only during services. Protestants have the DUTY of reading the Bible on their own. The theological explanation is that Catholic can perceive the writing only in context of the Holy Tradition (that is official interpretation of the Church), the protestants have to understand it on their own.

Being a Catholic, I actually tend to agree with the Protestant view, even though I *still* haven't read it in full, which is a failure of me as a literature scholar. On the other hand, isn't there a joke that the only people who read the Bible in full are atheists?

That joke probably has alot of truth to it. Statistics actually show that less than 10% of professed christians have read the Bible! I find this truly astounding. Essentially this tells us that what christians believe in isn't the Bible, but in the interpretations of other people telling them what they believe the Bible says.

I hear from many atheists who used to be christians that what made them atheists, or at least started them on the path to atheism, was reading the Bible, and being disgusted by what it contained. I think the reason that so many christians haven't read it is due to an underlying fear that they won't agree with what it says. They prefer believing the interpretations of other people. I truly think it takes alot of rationalization ability to be able to read it all the way through, and remain a christian.

  3. Not having read it yet, I think I may disagree.

The Bible is a weird book. The reason why I didn't read it in full yet is not because I am scared or what. I just find it, ehm, boring biggrin .

  4. No, do a better thing.

Pick a friend who has the same views you do. Get addresses of Jehovah's Witnesses in your town. And come to them "wanting to talk about God". The fliers, yes of course.

It would be fun to see somebody quoting, say, Richard Dawkins as thoroughly and randomly as they quote the Bible lol
