Mate, why do you care what neophytes are mentioning? They mention a lot whole lot a bunch of scores like the ones you mention and lots of them also carry STAR WARS, pirates of the caribbean, GLADIATOR and so on. Does that make the scores of lesser value? Me thinks not wink And what's wrong with neophytes, didn't we all start from that point*?

NP : GLADIATOR - Hans Zimmer etc etc

A very enjoyable album. I'm not the massive fan of this that some people are on this board and as a film score it's bitty and disjointed but as an album it's a very fine listen.

  1. I think Gladiator works actually wonders in the film. Any problems are I think Scott's editing faults.

And Scott has form when it comes to meddling with scores.

Still, even as a stand alone listen it doesn't flow well.

NP: Whisper Of The Heart (Soundtrack) - Yuji Nomi

Much better listening than Image Album - more orchestral, less vocals (though I also like the song versions), and many theme variations.

My favorite theme is Baron's theme, which appears first time on Engels Zimmer (means Angel's Room... nothing to do with the german guy wink) briefly, and then becomes an adventurous cue Let's Fly! We'll Catch the Updraft!. Finally this theme can be heard entirely on The Song of Baron. The violin solo is beautiful! It's definitely my favorite of all tracks.

Nomi's arrangements of Country Road song are great too.

Both this score and the one for The Cat Returns really impress me. I'd best describe Whisper of the Heart as bittersweet, in a good way. It has touches of sadness to it, yet still seems happy.

Bittersweet, that's the word! This score really expresses the subtleties of emotion of a teen girl. I also like how he described lazy modern-day Tokyo using electronics and guitars.

Haven't listened to The Cat Returns on album yet, but it's my new must-have!

This isn't as good as the original movie score, but it is still very good. It is more classical in style, but it leaves out the merry go round of life theme.

No Merry-go-round theme? shocked So then he must have come up with that wonderful theme after releasing Image Album...

Was Playing: The Power Of One - Hans Zimmer feat. Lebo M & S. African Choir

It's definitely the origin of that score! I hear the stampede sound, Under The Stars, Broadway's "Lioness Hunt" song, even "Nants ingonyama" in it... biggrin

NP: Jurassic Park - John Williams

Great themes, nobody doubts it. But I hope TV producers will stop overusing it every time dinosaurs appear on the screen tongue

Like? come on Jordi, there's a lot of tight melodic structure in Eagle Eye. Don't rush to conclusions, it's no AVP:R which is admittedly mindless loud banging, no matter how fun i think it is.

I've heard good things about it. How would you best describe it in terms of style?

The chorals are just unearthly IMO! Especially Journey To The Line! Really expresses the emotions of the army.

I heard somewhere that Polynesian choir song (God U Tekem Blong) is a traditional song, not written by Zimmer. Though no mention on the album...

The Thin Red Line is really a great piece of work anyway. I can't describe it, but this music has something... I don't play it over and over, I play it only when I have enough time to sit and listen.

No soul in Eagle Eye? I hear Tyler all over it, and as has been said many times before, it has all the balance and structure that AVP:R doesn´t have.

Oh, and about the "fireworks", I´m sure the score is as firework-ish as the film, so punk

  2. NP: Small Soldiers (videogame rip) - Michael Giacchino

Wooooww!! This is great. Early Giacchino showing his genious talent for building themes and creating one hell of a militaristic action score. This has nothing to do with the funfest by Goldsmith, but the high quality of the percussive arrangements and awesome use of male choir really make this easily as much fun, only Giacchino-fun. The way he crafts his themes and just builds upon them track after track is spectacular... And this was before some little thing called Medal of Honor put him in the spotlights.

NP - The Cutting Edge - Patrick Williams

One of my early favorite 90s sport score. The orchestral/pop sound for the skating scenes has that David Foster pomp and gloss to it, which adds tons to the enjoyment factor for me. The majority of the remaining cues are equally enjoyable dabbling in faux Rock&Roll, 50s Americana, soft romantic cues, and Classical pastiche. Mucho fun indeedy.

Well, I don't really care what they think, except that new devoted film music fans can only come from neophytes who get hooked. But it won't happen if they just keep getting interested in scores because "they liked it in the movie", and don't even go the distance by learning the composer's name and seek out what else he's done. It all starts there. I totally agree: it started that way for us, too. Except we evolved. Neophytes will sadly remain neophytes if they just keep flippin' over The Crow. I sometimes dream about film music becoming mainstream, and I thought Titanic might do it ten years ago, but I guess our community is destined to remain an obscure one forever...

Comment on AVPR: I think it has major structure! The way it regularly makes winks to Horner's ultra-famous "Bishop Countdown" is ingenious, and the Silvestri-flavoured suspence moments, especially later on the CD bring it really nice cohesion. Like I said: this is finally a composer who understood how to blend these two fandoms.
