There are some good non-baseball moments for sure... but it all seemed a bit cliched and forced. However, it's been a while since I've seen the movie but I can remember being thrown off every time they cut from the diamond to the relationship. It could have been better.

    -Erik-

Oh, wholeheartedly agreed. I didn't say the romance moments were good, not by a long shot. I also found them very cliché. I was just pointing out that they were at the heart of the movie, and you would wind up at best with a 47-minutes TV episode (albeit very good) without them.

Yup... I see where you are coming from. I'm not saying that all baseball all the time would be the answer but I think something a bit stronger for the cut aways would have improved the picture.

NP : THE TENANT - Philippe Sarde

Creepy, mesmerising score for Roman Polanski film that I've never seen. Good score and I can't think of anything else that utilises a Glass Harmonica.

This score exists on CD?!?? I must get it!! And you, Timmer, need to track down the movie! It was so paranoyingly chilling! I just saw it a couple of weeks ago and told myself "dang, if I could find this on CD, that would make a fine title for my first Philippe Sarde score".

    NP: Little Giants, John Debney.
Anyone remember years ago when Debney was the big "promo" name? When his only releases came in the form of much sought-after promos? He's certainly come a long way since then! Interestingly though, those promos remain some of my favourite of his work. Little Giant is bursting with energy and The Relic is possibly still my favourite Debney score ever, on par with Cutthroat of course.

It's a creepy film too, with a pretty tasteless (but funny) sense of humour.

Other film scores with glass harmonica (it's been very popular!): Mychael Danna's HEARTS IN ATLANTIS, Elliot Goldenthal uses them in the opening of OTHELLO (and also in INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE and FINAL FANTASY), Nathan Barr's HOSTEL, Benjamin Wallfisch's DEAR WENDY, Debbie Wiseman's ARSENE LUPIN... Desplat often uses a vibraphone like a glass harmonica as well, which is a common trick (see also Carl Vine - YOU CAN'T PUSH THE RIVER). There are others - including some more famous ones, but these are the ones that come to me now.

In that respect, Bruce Lee's involuntary contribution to the film comes to mind, and the action taking place during the scene. rolleyes

JF, you'll find The Tenant paired with Sarde's beautiful score for TESS on Universal France label.

What did you think of The Prince of Egypt?

I have it but haven't played it for a long time. I thought it's a good score, it fits the movie very well, and Burning Bush is a very beautiful piece... but somehow I couldn't get into it. Probably it's because I can't get into the subject matter of the story... I was born in a country where Buddhist & Shinto altars and christmas tree can coexist in one room. wink So, for me, it doesn't have as much emotion as The Lion King has.

But I thought it's a very well-made film, and its animation and visuals are stunning. I'll check out both the soundtrack and the film again.

ahah, well I see. But subject matter aside, I find the music by itself truly amazing. "Burning Bush" indeed stands out and so does "Red Sea". And I don't know if you could find the "Collector's Edition Music CD" which contains 10 extra minutes of score, but the "Chariot Race" cue found only on there is an insanely fun action piece! Maybe StreamingSoundtracks has it...

And yeah, plus I'm a sucker for ethnic music. Music with an Egyptian flavour will always score extra points, and so will The Lion King for its African touch. Oh and if you want to catch Zimmer doing other great African music, definitely give The Power of One a try.

Absolutely. Not to mention TLK has one of Zimmer's most impressive action tracks ever "...To Die For" and what is probably the most powerful Finale music I've heard in "King of Pride Rock". Both cues have been brutally shortened on the OST... sad

I don't have Collector's Edition, nor does SST (they can own only official releases). But I have the DVD so I'll check out that scene again.

Oh I like The Power of One! It was my first non-animated Zimmer score I heard, because it was the "origin" of The Lion King. (the directors decided to hire him after listening to The Power Of One...)

Scherzo For Motorcycle and Orchestra. Coming in a close second are the flurry of woodwinds and that action motif in the unreleased "The Pen In Mightier Than The Sword" which is now called "On the Tank" on the expanded edition. I can't believe I just said that... the EXPANDED EDITION of Last Crusade! Who would have ever thought. punk

NP: Whisper Of The Heart (Soundtrack) - Yuji Nomi

Much better listening than Image Album - more orchestral, less vocals (though I also like the song versions), and many theme variations.

My favorite theme is Baron's theme, which appears first time on Engels Zimmer (means Angel's Room... nothing to do with the german guy wink) briefly, and then becomes an adventurous cue Let's Fly! We'll Catch the Updraft!. Finally this theme can be heard entirely on The Song of Baron. The violin solo is beautiful! It's definitely my favorite of all tracks.

Nomi's arrangements of Country Road song are great too.
